“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”
― Oscar Wilde

The joy of living takes on a different meaning with the mastering of the English Language. See the world, talk to people from all walks of life. Communicate. Socialise. It is all possible with a universal language. And we only have to learn it once. It stays with you for life. Like cycling or swimming.

Especially in Singapore, where citizens of the world visits, it is such a waste that we cannot leverage on this without commanding a universal language like English. Every opportunity awaits us, carpe diem.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

Funny thing as we learn a new language. Our world suddenly gets larger and more inclusive. An alien suddenly becomes a friend. A book becomes food for the soul, and an outlet to another world. Literature defines us. Poetry elevates us. Movies entertains us. It is us becoming more than what we were. The higher the mastery, the deeper our understanding of the language, the culture, and the people. The more vocabulary we have, the more we can express ourselves, perceive accurately, and aspire to be.

Emerging countries around Asia is another advantage we can leverage the English Language on. What is the chance that we need another language when we visit those country when we converse in English? Being pragmatic, we have used English to converse when we go tour another country. Korea, Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, etc. We can try to learn bits and pieces of their local language, but more often than not, its back to English that we survive the trip.  We can learn their language of course, and that makes the trip so much more interesting. But there is no need to. Which makes English useful.

“The trouble is if you don’t spend your life yourself, other people spend it for you.”
― Peter Shaffer

That is the thing with language too. Learning a language is not just liberating, it is empowering. What we know about English is that we can get somewhere in life with it. Whether it is career, relationships, going places, or even ordering your favourite food, it takes a language to achieve our aims, our needs, and our dreams. We spend our lives looking for something special to define ourselves, and oh how we would have missed it without the mastery of English.

So here we have arrived, and here we have become. I once had an English teacher, who said, “if we hear, does it mean we have listened.” That is such a good reason for us to master a language. I read Animal Farm when I was in Primary 5, and to me, it was just a story about Animals trying to run a farm. My cousins had a good laugh making me explain to them what the story was about. I had to re-do it in Secondary 2 as a Literature text. Guess what, the same book meant totally different concepts at different stages of my life. That is language, a word may never mean the same thing. It is a mercurial thing, changing, evolving, adapting and living, like us.

“Remember, remember, this is now, and now, and now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all I’ve taken for granted.”
― Sylvia Plath
