Vocabulary for Applying Ideas to Singapore in GP: A JC2 AQ Guide

The one-sentence truth: “Singapore is different” is not analysis until you can name the difference and show how it changes the mechanism.

Strong AQ application needs contextual vocabulary that explains why a passage claim transfers more or less strongly to Singapore.

Institutional vocabulary

Administrative capacity, regulatory framework, public trust, policy coordination, enforcement, legitimacy and accountability help analyse how institutions change outcomes.

Demographic vocabulary

Ageing population, household structure, migration, fertility, population density and demographic composition can alter demand, vulnerability and policy trade-offs.

Economic vocabulary

Economic openness, small domestic market, trade dependence, labour constraints, productivity and cost competitiveness help explain exposure to global forces.

Social vocabulary

Multiculturalism, social cohesion, linguistic diversity, meritocracy, inequality, social mobility and community norms provide more precise local analysis than “Singapore society”.

Geography and density

A dense city-state can make public transport, infrastructure coordination and service delivery more scalable while increasing land scarcity and congestion externalities. Geography changes mechanisms.

Use context comparatively

Do not describe Singapore in isolation. Explain how the relevant condition differs from the passage context and what that difference does to the argument.

Example

“An argument that carbon pricing is politically infeasible may be less persuasive in a context where transport alternatives are extensive and policy implementation is highly coordinated; however, distributional concerns remain where households differ in their ability to absorb higher costs.”

Singapore-context audit

  • Which local institution matters?
  • Which demographic feature matters?
  • Does density amplify or mitigate the effect?
  • Does economic openness change exposure?
  • Which social value or constraint matters?
  • How does this alter applicability?

Final thought

Singapore should enter an AQ paragraph as a causal context, not a patriotic label.
