The Problem with News | How AI Summaries Change What We See
AI-mediated news presents a shift in how information is perceived, as AI-generated summaries may alter a reader’s first mental frame before accessing original sources. This phenomenon emphasizes the need for “lens awareness,” where audiences must critically assess the wording and framing of AI content. The way information is presented can significantly influence public understanding and…
News by eduKateSG is a Society and Culture branch that studies how news shapes public attention, shared reality, civic awareness and civilisation understanding.
This project explains news not only as information, headlines or media updates, but as a social signal system that decides what people notice, what they ignore, what they believe, and how different groups come to understand the same world in different ways.
Across the News articles, eduKateSG explores how news moves from an event into public understanding. A real event does not reach society in a pure form. It passes through selection, reporting, framing, headlines, platforms, algorithms, summaries, comments, emotional reactions and repeated sharing. By the time news reaches a reader, it has already been shaped by many layers.
This makes news powerful: it can inform, warn, educate and connect society, but it can also fragment attention, distort meaning, amplify fear, narrow perspectives or turn public understanding into separate bubbles.
The branch studies the shift from the old front-page model to the modern algorithmic feed. In the past, many people saw similar headlines through newspapers, television news and shared public channels.
Today, people often receive personalised news through Google, YouTube, Facebook, X, TikTok, AI summaries and recommendation systems. This creates multiple pathways of information. Different readers may see different versions, intensities and interpretations of the same event, which can weaken shared social understanding if people do not know how the system works.
This project also examines how AI changes news reading. AI summaries can help readers save time and understand complex issues more quickly, but they can also shape the first mental frame before a person reads the original source. The wording, emphasis, omissions and structure of a summary can influence what a reader thinks is important.
For this reason, eduKateSG treats news literacy as an essential modern skill: readers must learn to ask where the news came from, what angle it uses, what evidence supports it, what may be missing, who benefits from the framing, and whether several sources tell the same story.
As part of eduKateSG’s wider SocietyOS, CultureOS, RealityOS and CivilisationOS framework, the News branch helps students, parents, educators and readers understand that news is not the same as reading a storybook, comic, magazine or social media post.
News affects accepted reality. It influences trust, emotion, decision-making, public conversation and civic behaviour. A healthy society needs people who can read news carefully, compare sources, detect framing, separate fact from interpretation, and understand what each news event may reveal about culture, society and civilisation itself.
