Sengkang Primary 4 English Tuition | Relative Adverbs: Where, When & Why • 3-Pax

Sengkang Primary 4 English tuition should help students connect a noun to a clause that explains place, time or reason using where, when and why.

This rebuilt legacy URL now owns one distinct P4 English job: place/time/reason noun → relative adverb → clause → reference → meaning. Old 2020 class-opening claims, stale Sengkang-centre wording, invalid phone numbers and result promises have been removed.

eduKateSG does not claim a current Sengkang branch. Current centres are at 83 Punggol Central, Singapore 828761 and 8 Fourth Avenue, Singapore 268674. Selected Primary English classes run in focused 3-pax small groups, typically 1.5 hours.

The Direct Answer

Relative adverbs introduce clauses that give more information about certain nouns:

  • where — place;
  • when — time;
  • why — reason.

Examples:

  • “This is the room where we met.”
  • “I remember the day when we moved.”
  • “That is the reason why she left early.”

Choose the relative word from the meaning of the noun being explained.

Where

“The park where we played has reopened.”

The clause tells us more about the park.

Students can paraphrase:

“The park in which we played…”

This helps reveal the place relationship.

When

“I remember the morning when the rain began.”

The clause identifies a time.

Possible formal paraphrase:

“the morning on which the rain began”.

Why

“That is the reason why the event was postponed.”

The clause explains the reason.

“The reason that…” is also possible in many contexts; English does not require why after every occurrence of reason.

Worked Example: Place

Two sentences:

“We visited the library. We first met there.”

Combined:

“We visited the library where we first met.”

The place noun is now linked to a relative clause.

Worked Example: Time

“I will never forget the year. We moved to Singapore then.”

Combined:

“I will never forget the year when we moved to Singapore.”

Worked Example: Reason

“There was a reason. Amir refused the offer for that reason.”

Combined:

“There was a reason why Amir refused the offer.”

Where vs Which

“The school where I studied…” emphasises place relation.

“The school which I attended…” uses which as the object of attended.

Students should choose by clause structure, not by the noun alone.

Worked Example: Wrong Where

Weak: “The book where I bought yesterday was expensive.”

A book is not a place relation here.

Repair: “The book that/which I bought yesterday was expensive.”

Worked Example: Wrong When

Weak: “The teacher when helped me was kind.”

The noun is a person, not a time.

Repair: “The teacher who helped me was kind.”

Relative Adverb vs Question Word

Question:

Where did you go?”

Relative:

“I know the place where you went.”

The same word has a different grammatical job.

Embedded Word Order

Direct question: “Where did you stay?”

Relative clause: “the hotel where you stayed”.

Do not write: “the hotel where did you stay”.

The Noun-Type Test

Look at the noun before the clause:

  • place noun → where may fit;
  • time noun → when may fit;
  • reason → why may fit.

Then check the clause grammar.

The Preposition Paraphrase Test

where → in/at which.

when → on/in/at which depending on time noun.

why → for which.

If the paraphrase makes sense, the relative relationship is clearer.

Omission

English sometimes omits when or why in certain constructions:

“the day we met”

“the reason she left”

Students should recognise these natural reduced forms while learning the full relationship first.

Where Cannot Replace Every Place Preposition

“The chair where I sat” is common because the chair functions as a location in context.

But some clauses require a different structure:

“the chair that I moved” — not “where I moved” if the chair itself was moved.

Relative Adverbs in Composition

They can connect setting and event smoothly:

“We returned to the corner where the accident had happened.”

The clause anchors the scene without needing another sentence.

Relative Adverbs in Comprehension

Students should identify what the clause modifies.

“The summer when the town flooded changed everyone’s routines.”

The relative clause specifies the summer; it is not a separate main event.

Do Not Overload Noun Phrases

“The day when we met when it was raining when the bus broke down…” becomes difficult.

Use one clean relative clause, then start a new sentence if more events need explanation.

P4 Context

MOE’s Primary English Language Syllabus 2020 develops increasingly complex noun phrases and clause relationships as resources for reading and writing. Relative adverbs help P4 students connect place, time and reason without losing sentence structure. Official reference: MOE English Language Syllabus 2020 Primary.

Common Relative-Adverb Failure Modes

Symptom Issue Repair
where used after any noun Place relation not checked Use noun-type test
where did / when did inside clause Question order retained Use statement order
why after person/object noun Reason relation absent Choose who/which/that
Long chain of relative clauses Noun phrase overloaded Split sentence
Clause referent unclear Attachment weak Place clause beside noun

Why Three Students Helps

One student identifies the noun, one chooses where/when/why and the third paraphrases the relationship using a preposition. The tutor can then swap the noun to test whether the choice still works.

When Sengkang Primary 4 Families May Consider This Support

  • Where/when/why are selected by sound rather than meaning.
  • Embedded clauses keep question word order.
  • Relative clauses attach to the wrong noun.
  • Composition uses many short sentences because setting/time details are hard to combine.

What Progress Should Look Like

A stronger P4 learner can identify the place/time/reason noun, choose a suitable relative adverb, preserve statement word order and attach the clause clearly.
