Answer should follow the route and distinguish movement, digestion and absorption:
“The bread travels down the oesophagus to the stomach, where digestion continues. In the small intestine, digested nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. Water is later absorbed in the large intestine from the remaining material.”
Worked Example: Why Water Absorption Matters
If too little water is absorbed from the remaining material, waste may remain more watery. Students do not need medical detail; the system idea is that the large intestine helps recover water.
The Sequence Test
Give organ cards out of order and ask the learner to arrange them. Then require one linking sentence between each pair:
“Food moves from ___ to ___ because…”
The Function Test
If a student can name an organ but cannot state what changes there, the concept is incomplete.
The Transfer Test
Use a new diagram with unusual shapes or labels removed. The learner should recover the system from order and function rather than picture memory.
