GP Vocabulary for Biodiversity and Conservation: A JC2 General Paper Guide

The one-sentence truth: Biodiversity matters not because every species is equally useful to humans, but because living systems create ecological functions, resilience and options that are difficult to replace once lost.

Core vocabulary

Biodiversity, ecosystem, habitat, conservation, restoration, extinction, ecosystem services, ecological resilience, protected area, stewardship.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity includes variation among species, genes and ecosystems. A high species count alone does not capture the full structure or health of an ecosystem.

Conservation versus preservation

Conservation usually involves protecting and managing nature while recognising human use. Preservation places greater emphasis on keeping ecosystems or landscapes relatively untouched. The distinction matters when discussing development, tourism and resource use.

Restoration

Restoration attempts to recover ecological function after degradation. It is not the same as preventing damage in the first place; some losses are difficult or impossible to reverse.

Ecosystem services

Ecosystems can provide pollination, flood regulation, carbon storage, water purification, cooling and cultural value. The term helps explain why ecological loss can create economic and social consequences even where the damaged species has no obvious market price.

Extinction and irreversibility

Extinction is permanent. This gives biodiversity loss a different evaluative weight from temporary environmental damage. Irreversibility can justify precaution even when exact economic value is uncertain.

Ecological resilience

More diverse systems can sometimes be better able to absorb disturbance because several species or processes can perform overlapping functions. Resilience does not mean immunity to damage.

Development trade-offs

Conservation decisions often compete with housing, infrastructure, agriculture and economic development. Strong GP analysis identifies which ecological functions are at risk, whether alternatives exist and how reversible the loss would be.

Example sentence

“Biodiversity protection is most defensible where ecological loss is irreversible and the affected habitat provides functions that built infrastructure cannot easily reproduce, although conservation policy must still account for legitimate land and development needs.”

Singapore application

Singapore’s land scarcity, urban density, coastal ecosystems and extensive built environment make biodiversity a particularly useful trade-off topic. Urban nature, habitat connectivity, parks, mangroves and development choices can be analysed through resilience, ecosystem services and opportunity cost rather than a simple nature-versus-development frame.

Questions that improve GP analysis

  • What ecological function is being protected?
  • Is the loss reversible?
  • Who receives the benefit of development?
  • Who bears the ecological cost?
  • Can design reduce the trade-off?
  • What uncertainty remains?
