GP Vocabulary for Strong vs Weak Arguments: How JC2 Students Test Reasoning

The one-sentence truth: A strong argument is not one that sounds confident. It is one whose claim, evidence and reasoning stay connected under pressure.

General Paper students often evaluate arguments by instinct: “This point is convincing,” “This example is weak,” “I disagree with the writer.” JC2 demands a more useful vocabulary. Instead of reacting, you should be able to diagnose why an argument is strong or weak. Is the premise questionable? Is the evidence irrelevant? Is the inference too large? Is the conclusion coherent but unsupported? Is there a hidden assumption doing all the work?

1. A claim is not an argument

“Social media is harmful” is a claim. It becomes an argument only when the writer provides a reason and a mechanism: “Recommendation systems can amplify emotionally provocative content because engagement is commercially valuable, which may intensify exposure to polarising material.”

Strong GP writing therefore asks: what supports the claim, and how does the support connect to the conclusion?

2. Premises: the foundations students forget to test

An argument can be elegantly written and still rest on a weak premise. Suppose a student argues that “Governments should ban harmful content because citizens cannot judge information reliably.” The policy conclusion depends heavily on a premise about citizen judgement. If that premise is overstated, the whole argument becomes unstable.

Ask whether the premise is factual, normative or assumed. Then ask what evidence would justify it.

3. Inference: does the conclusion travel too far?

Students often possess relevant evidence but draw an oversized conclusion. A survey showing anxiety among some teenagers does not establish that social media is the principal cause of youth mental-health problems. A successful policy in one country does not prove universal transferability.

The phrase the inference is too strong is often more accurate than “the example is bad”. The evidence may be useful; the problem is what the writer tries to make it prove.

4. Valid and sound: useful distinctions

In strict logic, an argument can be valid even if its premises are false, because validity concerns whether the conclusion follows from the premises. Soundness requires both valid reasoning and acceptable premises. GP students do not need formal symbolic logic, but the distinction is useful.

You can therefore say: “The reasoning is internally coherent, but the argument is weakened by a doubtful premise.” That is more precise than calling the whole argument illogical.

5. Relevance: not every impressive fact helps

A statistic can be accurate and still irrelevant. If the essay asks whether museums matter to national identity, data on museum visitor numbers may show popularity but not necessarily identity formation. The fact must connect to the criterion being discussed.

Good evidence is not merely true. It is relevant to the claim.

6. Substantiated: claims that have earned support

Substantiated means supported by sufficient evidence or reasoning. A claim can be plausible but unsubstantiated. This is a useful distinction when evaluating commentary, political rhetoric or predictions.

When writing your own essay, ask which topic sentences are assertions and which are genuinely substantiated by mechanism, evidence and comparison.

7. Coherence: the paragraph must agree with itself

A coherent argument does not contradict its own assumptions. If a student claims that individuals should be free to make choices because autonomy matters, then later supports broad paternalistic restrictions without explaining the change in criterion, the essay loses coherence.

Coherence also applies across paragraphs. Your conclusion should emerge from the criteria established earlier, not introduce a completely new standard in the final five lines.

8. Hidden assumptions

Many arguments depend on assumptions that are never stated. “School uniforms create discipline” may assume that visible conformity changes behaviour. “More information improves democracy” may assume that citizens have time, trust and skills to evaluate information. “Innovation improves society” may assume benefits are widely distributed.

One of the strongest GP habits is to ask: what must be true for this argument to work?

9. Tenuous reasoning

A tenuous argument has a weak connection between evidence and conclusion. This often appears in speculative chains: “If students use AI, they will stop thinking, become dependent, perform poorly at work and weaken national competitiveness.” Each step may be possible, but the chain becomes less secure as it lengthens.

Use tenuous when the connection is not impossible but insufficiently supported.

10. Common reasoning failures

  • Overgeneralisation: a narrow example becomes a broad rule.
  • False dilemma: only two options are presented when more exist.
  • Circular reasoning: the conclusion is smuggled into the premise.
  • Correlation-causation confusion: association is treated as proof of cause.
  • Appeal to popularity: widespread belief is treated as truth.
  • Straw man: an opposing argument is simplified until easy to attack.

Knowing the names is useful, but naming a fallacy is not enough. Explain exactly where the reasoning fails.

11. Strong arguments can still be incomplete

An argument may be strong on one criterion and incomplete overall. A case for nuclear energy may be strong on emissions and reliability but incomplete if it ignores cost, waste, public acceptance or construction time. A case for free speech may be principled but incomplete if it ignores direct harms.

Evaluation should therefore distinguish wrong from incomplete. This is one of the most useful habits in mature discussion.

Paper 2: testing the writer’s reasoning

Paper 2 passages often contain arguments that rely on analogy, examples, assumptions or causal claims. Ask what each paragraph is trying to establish and what evidence is doing the work. If two passages disagree, identify whether they dispute facts, assumptions, values or causal mechanisms.

This vocabulary helps you describe disagreement accurately rather than simply writing that one author is “more convincing”.

A four-layer argument test

  • Claim: What exactly is being asserted?
  • Evidence: What supports it?
  • Bridge: Why does that evidence support that claim?
  • Boundary: Under what conditions would the reasoning stop working?

If you can answer all four, you can usually diagnose the argument with far greater precision.

From “convincing” to analytical evaluation

Weak: “The writer is convincing because the example is strong.”

Better: “The example is relevant because it directly illustrates the claimed mechanism.”

Stronger: “The argument is persuasive because the example supports the proposed mechanism, although the conclusion should remain limited to contexts with similar institutional conditions.”

A seven-day reasoning drill

  • Day 1: separate claims from reasons in five opinion pieces.
  • Day 2: identify the main premise behind each argument.
  • Day 3: test whether evidence is relevant or merely interesting.
  • Day 4: identify one hidden assumption in five claims.
  • Day 5: find one inference that travels beyond the evidence.
  • Day 6: compare two arguments using coherence, relevance and substantiation.
  • Day 7: write a timed paragraph and annotate claim, evidence, bridge and boundary.

  • Can you distinguish relevant evidence from irrelevant detail?
  • Can you identify a hidden assumption?
  • Can you explain why reasoning is tenuous rather than simply “weak”?

The phrase “strong argument” should never be a compliment without a diagnosis. At JC2, you should be able to say what is strong, what carries the reasoning, where the argument is vulnerable, and how much of the conclusion remains justified after serious testing.
