Lexical Entailment and Troponymy: Why Whispering Entails Talking but Talking Does Not Entail Whispering

Mei whispered to Arun.

Can we safely conclude:

Mei spoke to Arun?

Yes, in the ordinary intended sense.

Now reverse it.

Mei spoke to Arun.

Can we conclude:

Mei whispered to Arun?

No.

Speaking could have been:

  • whispering;
  • shouting;
  • murmuring;
  • chatting;
  • lecturing;
  • announcing.

This one-way relationship is a form of lexical entailment.

When one verb describes a more specific manner of another verb, WordNet uses the term troponymy.

The central principle is:

A more specific verb can entail a more general verb, but the more general verb does not normally entail the specific manner.

That makes verb vocabulary more than a synonym list.

It gives us:

directional inference.

What is lexical entailment?

In lexical semantics, one expression entails another when the truth of the first guarantees the truth of the second in the relevant sense.

For verbs:

Someone whispers → someone speaks.

If the first event truly occurred, the second is automatically true.

But:

Someone speaks → someone whispers

does not follow.

The relation is:
