A student sees hiss. Even before opening a dictionary, the word may feel sharp and breathy. Now buzz: the sound of the word seems to imitate the sound it names. Now splash: the word does not reproduce water perfectly, but it seems to carry something of the event.

English vocabulary is often taught as if the connection between form and meaning were completely arbitrary. Much of language is arbitrary. The word table does not obviously sound like a table. But some words are different. Their sound gives the learner a clue.

Sometimes the sound of a word is not merely a container for meaning. It contributes evidence about the meaning itself.

What is onomatopoeia?

Onomatopoeia uses words whose sounds resemble the noises they refer to. Familiar examples include buzz, hiss, crackle, sizzle, pop, slurp, clang, thud and rustle.

The broad route is: real-world sound → vocal imitation → conventional word. The imitation is never an acoustic recording. Human speech has a limited sound inventory, and different languages encode the same event differently.

Onomatopoeia is one kind of sound symbolism

Sound symbolism is broader. Some speech sounds can carry probabilistic associations with size, shape, sharpness, roundness, speed or emotional tone. This does not mean each sound has one fixed meaning. It means phonetic form can bias interpretation.
