Primary 6 Vocabulary for PSLE Paper 2: Meaning, Context and Precision

Three primary students in matching blue pinafores work together over open books at a classroom table, with colourful stationery and lesson notes on a whiteboard.

Paper 2 vocabulary is less about showing what you know and more about choosing what fits.

A familiar word may carry an unfamiliar meaning. A correct root may appear in the wrong form. Two synonyms may differ in tone or collocation. The task rewards precision under constraints.

Begin with the Primary 6 AL1 Advanced Top 100 Vocabulary List. This guide shows how to use that vocabulary in Paper 2 tasks.

The Paper 2 Vocabulary Questions

  1. What does the word mean here?
  2. What grammatical form is required?
  3. What words naturally belong beside it?
  4. What does the surrounding paragraph suggest?
  5. Which option is most precise?

Context Comes First

Do not choose a meaning from memory before reading the sentence. Multiple-meaning words such as current, issue, point, light and state require context.

Word Forms Matter

The group showed great ______ in solving the problem.

If the idea is resourcefulness, the noun form is required. Knowing resourceful is not enough if grammar requires resourcefulness.

Collocation Matters

  • strong evidence
  • take responsibility
  • raise awareness
  • make progress
  • draw a conclusion

Natural word partnerships can separate two otherwise plausible options.

Inference and Vocabulary Work Together

A precise word often summarises several clues. If a character hesitates, avoids eye contact and speaks softly, the passage may support words such as reluctant, embarrassed or apprehensive depending on context.

Elimination Is a Skill

When several options appear possible, reject candidates that fail grammar, tone, collocation or paragraph logic. Paper 2 accuracy often comes from ruling out near-misses.

Common Paper 2 Mistakes

  • choosing by familiarity;
  • ignoring the sentence after the blank;
  • using the correct meaning in the wrong form;
  • treating synonyms as interchangeable;
  • missing contrast markers;
  • overlooking collocation.

Mini Diagnostic

  1. Why should context be read before selecting a meaning?
  2. What is collocation?
  3. Why can the correct root still produce a wrong answer?
  4. What does although often signal?
  5. Give two meanings of current.
  6. Explain why elimination can improve accuracy.

The Real Goal: Precision Under Constraint

Paper 2 vocabulary is a test of fit: meaning, grammar, context and natural English working together.

Advanced Paper 2 Lab: Solving Vocabulary as a Constraint Problem

Paper 2 becomes more manageable when students treat each vocabulary item as a set of constraints rather than a memory test. The right answer must satisfy meaning, grammar, phrase pattern, tone and wider context simultaneously.

The Constraint Stack

  1. What meaning is required?
  2. What part of speech or word form fits?
  3. Which collocation is natural?
  4. What relationship does the sentence signal?
  5. What level of intensity or tone fits?
  6. Does the answer remain coherent with the paragraph?

Distractor Autopsy

After checking an answer, do not stop at “wrong”. Label why the distractor failed: meaning, grammar, collocation, tone or context. This turns each error into a reusable rule. If most mistakes are word-form errors, more synonym memorisation will not solve the problem.

Context Windows

Use three windows: phrase, sentence and paragraph. Start locally, then widen only when needed. A collocation may solve the phrase; a contrast marker may solve the sentence; a topic shift may require the paragraph.

Precision Under Elimination

CandidatePossible failure
right idea, wrong formresourceful instead of resourcefulness
right emotion field, wrong causeindignant when no unfairness is present
right topic, wrong partnershippowerful evidence instead of strong evidence
right sentence, wrong paragraphoption contradicts later information

Final Paper 2 Challenge

Take ten previous vocabulary errors and classify them by failure type. Then design one new question that targets each weakness. Revision becomes more efficient when the student practises the mechanism that failed rather than simply repeating the original question.
