Run-On Sentences and Comma Splices in English: How to Join Complete Clauses Without Losing the Reader

Still two complete clauses.

This time there is a comma.

But the comma alone does not normally create a sufficient boundary in formal Standard English.

The first is a fused sentence or run-on sentence.

The second is a comma splice.

The central principle is:

A sentence boundary must show the grammatical relationship between independent clauses; a run-on happens when complete clauses are fused without enough structure.

This matters because students are often told:

Your sentence is too long.

But length is not the real issue.

A very short sentence can be a run-on.

A very long sentence can be perfectly grammatical.

A run-on sentence is not simply a long sentence

Consider:

I came home I slept.

Short.

Still a run-on.

Now:

Now the relationship is:

concession.

Subordination does more than repair punctuation.

It ranks ideas.

The sample was small. The result was significant.

Neutral sequence.

The sample was small, but the result was significant.

Contrast.

Although the sample was small, the result was significant.

Concession with the main assertion on the result.

The sample was small; however, the result was significant.

Formal contrast between two independent clauses.

“However” does not repair a comma splice by itself

Incorrect in formal Standard English:

The sample was small, however, the result was significant.

Why?

However is a conjunctive adverb here.

It does not function like:

but.

Standard repairs include:

The sample was small; however, the result was significant.

or:

Weak:

Repair:

After the government raised taxes, protests spread.

But be careful:

the subordinate form can imply a temporal/causal relationship.

Punctuation repair should not invent causation.

Suppose the source only tells us:

A happened.

Then:

B happened.

Changing the sentence to:

Because A happened, B happened.

adds causation.

Grammar can overclaim.
