Vocabulary for Claims, Evidence and Reasoning in Secondary 2 English

An argument becomes stronger when students can name what each sentence is doing. One sentence states a claim. Another supplies evidence. A third explains why that evidence matters. Without those distinctions, essays often become a pile of opinions and examples.

This article builds from the Secondary 2 Essential 100 Vocabulary, especially assert, evident, infer, justify, significant, sufficient, validate, assess and evaluate.

Quick Read: Claim → Evidence → Reasoning

  • Claim: what you want the reader to accept.
  • Evidence: information that supports the claim.
  • Reasoning: explanation of how the evidence supports the claim.

All three are necessary. A claim without evidence is unsupported. Evidence without reasoning may be irrelevant or misunderstood.

Claim Vocabulary

  • argue;
  • assert;
  • contend;
  • maintain;
  • propose;
  • suggest.

Suggest leaves more uncertainty than assert. The verb should match the strength of the position.

Evidence Vocabulary

  • supports;
  • indicates;
  • demonstrates;
  • illustrates;
  • corroborates;
  • validates.

These are not interchangeable. An example can illustrate without proving. Additional evidence can corroborate. A finding may support a claim without establishing certainty.

Reasoning Vocabulary

  • because;
  • therefore;
  • consequently;
  • this matters because;
  • the implication is;
  • this is significant because.

Reasoning tells the reader why the evidence is relevant. “70% preferred the new timetable” is evidence about preference. It does not automatically prove improved wellbeing.

Sufficient Evidence

The hero word sufficient is especially useful. A single anecdote may be relevant but insufficient for a broad claim. Strong readers ask whether enough evidence exists and whether it represents the population being discussed.

Significant Evidence

Significant should not be used merely to mean “interesting.” Ask whether the evidence changes the conclusion, affects many people, or has meaningful magnitude in context.

Relevant Evidence

A fact can be true and irrelevant. If the claim concerns whether a programme improves reading, evidence about how colourful its website is does not answer the central question.

Evidence and Bias

Ask who produced the evidence, how it was collected, what may be missing and whether the framing favours one outcome. Bias does not automatically invalidate evidence, but it can affect interpretation.

A Worked Example

Claim: Schools should provide more shaded outdoor spaces.

Evidence: Students avoid exposed areas during the hottest parts of the day.

Reasoning: Shade can make outdoor areas more usable by reducing direct heat exposure, which may increase access to outdoor social and activity spaces.

Qualification: The effect will also depend on ventilation, layout and maintenance.

Avoid Evidence Dumping

Three statistics placed one after another do not become an argument automatically. After important evidence, explain what it shows and why it matters.

Avoid Circular Reasoning

“The rule is good because it is beneficial” simply repeats the claim. Identify the mechanism: what benefit, for whom, and how?

Practice Routine

  1. State one claim.
  2. List two pieces of evidence.
  3. Rank them for relevance.
  4. Explain why the stronger evidence matters.
  5. Ask whether it is sufficient.
  6. Qualify the claim if necessary.

Reasoning Makes Evidence Useful

Use the Secondary 2 Essential 100 to build the language of evidence. The goal is not simply to include facts. It is to show how evidence supports a claim and where its limits remain.

Evidence Laboratory: Ask What the Evidence Can Actually Carry

Evidence has a carrying capacity. A single example can illustrate a possibility. A well-designed survey can describe responses from its sample. A repeated pattern can support an inference. Problems begin when the conclusion placed on top of the evidence is heavier than the evidence can support.

Four Questions Before Using Evidence

  1. Relevance: Does it address the actual claim?
  2. Quality: How was the information produced?
  3. Scope: Who or what does it represent?
  4. Strength: What conclusion is proportionate to it?

Worked Example: “Students Prefer Digital Notes”

Imagine a class survey in which 24 of 30 students say they prefer digital notes. The evidence can support the claim that most students in that class reported a preference for digital notes at that time. It cannot by itself prove that digital notes improve learning, that all Secondary 2 students prefer them, or that the preference will remain stable.

This is the difference between reading evidence and merely repeating a number.

Evidence Types Have Different Jobs

Reasoning Is the Bridge, Not a Decorative Sentence

Students often add “This shows that…” and then restate the evidence. Real reasoning identifies the bridge. If a shaded outdoor space is used more frequently at midday, the reasoning might connect shade to lower direct heat exposure, which makes the space more usable. The bridge is the mechanism.

Evidence Can Support Several Claims

The same observation may support different conclusions depending on the question. A long queue could support a claim about high demand, insufficient capacity, poor process design or simply a temporary surge. The surrounding evidence determines which interpretation is justified.

Absence of Evidence Is Not Automatically Evidence of Absence

If a small survey finds no difference, that does not always prove no difference exists. The method may have been too weak to detect it. At Secondary 2, students do not need advanced statistics to understand the principle: a result must be interpreted in relation to how the evidence was gathered.

Triangulation: Different Evidence, Same Question

A stronger case often combines different evidence types. To evaluate whether a library extension improves access, a student might consider visitor numbers, waiting times, interviews and observations of who uses the new space. If different sources converge, confidence can increase. If they conflict, the conflict itself requires explanation.

The Evidence Ladder

  1. State the claim narrowly.
  2. Choose evidence that directly bears on it.
  3. Describe what the evidence literally shows.
  4. Explain the mechanism or logical connection.
  5. Identify one limitation.
  6. Use a conclusion verb proportionate to the strength: illustrates, suggests, supports, indicates, demonstrates.

A real evidence-based claim is responsive to evidence. Ask what result would weaken or reverse your conclusion. This simple question teaches students that evidence is not ammunition collected after a decision; it is information that should shape the decision.
