Some vocabulary belongs to one topic. Other vocabulary travels. Words such as analyse, evaluate, infer, empirical, systematic, hypothesis, synthesis and justify appear across English, Science, Geography, History and other subjects because they describe ways of thinking rather than one body of content.
This guide complements the Top 100 Vocabulary List Secondary 3 Grade A1. It shows why several hero words are especially valuable: they are portable intellectual tools.
Academic vocabulary is thinking vocabulary
When a student learns evaluate, the word can travel from a literature response to a science investigation or a humanities essay. The object changes; the reasoning job remains: judge quality, significance or effectiveness according to criteria.
Analyse
To analyse is to break something into parts and examine relationships. In English, students analyse diction, tone or structure. In Science, they analyse data. In Humanities, they analyse causes, consequences and sources.
Interpret
Interpretation explains meaning. A student may interpret a metaphor, a graph, a historical source or a set of observations. Interpretation goes beyond description because it answers “What does this mean?”
Infer
Inference moves from evidence to an unstated conclusion. In English, clues reveal motive. In Science, observations may support an inference about a process. In History, sources may allow cautious inferences about attitudes or conditions.
Empirical
Empirical means grounded in observation or experiment. The word helps students distinguish evidence collected from the world from speculation, intuition or purely theoretical reasoning. That distinction matters far beyond Science.
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation that can be tested or examined. Scientists formulate hypotheses formally, but readers also form provisional hypotheses while interpreting a text: perhaps this character is hiding something; perhaps this policy failed because incentives were weak.
Evaluate
Evaluation requires criteria. “Was the policy effective?” demands a definition of effectiveness. “Was the experiment reliable?” requires evidence about method. “Was the writer persuasive?” requires examination of argument, evidence and rhetoric.
Justify
To justify is to provide reasons or evidence that support a conclusion or action. Across subjects, justification turns an answer from assertion into reasoning.
Synthesis
Synthesis combines separate elements into a coherent whole. A student may synthesise information from multiple paragraphs, datasets, sources or viewpoints. This is more than summarising each part separately; it identifies the larger pattern created by their combination.
Systematic
A systematic approach follows an organised method. Scientific investigations, close reading, revision schedules and source evaluation all benefit from systematic procedure.
Inductive and deductive
Inductive reasoning moves from specific observations toward a broader generalisation. Deductive reasoning applies a general principle to a particular case. Students meet both patterns across mathematics, science, argument and everyday reasoning.
Extrapolate
To extrapolate is to extend a pattern beyond the known information. It is useful when interpreting trends, but it must be qualified because conditions may change outside the observed range.

Cause-and-effect vocabulary

These words differ in strength. Contribute to is weaker than cause. Exacerbate means make an existing problem worse. Mitigate means reduce severity. Precision matters because causal language can easily overclaim.
Comparison vocabulary
Words such as similar, analogous, contrast, diverge, whereas and juxtaposition help students organise relationships. Comparison is not merely spotting sameness; it requires identifying the dimension on which things are similar or different.

Each word implies a criterion. Something can be effective but inequitable, pragmatic but ethically questionable, reliable but limited in scope. Mature academic writing keeps these dimensions separate.
English: vocabulary as interpretation
In English, academic vocabulary helps students discuss language precisely. Instead of “the writer makes it sound bad”, students can describe a sceptical tone, an ambiguous claim, an acrimonious exchange or a conciliatory response.
Science: vocabulary as evidence control
Science rewards distinctions between observation, inference, hypothesis and conclusion. A measurement is not the same as an interpretation of the measurement. Empirical evidence may support a hypothesis without proving it absolutely.
Humanities: vocabulary as perspective control
History and Geography often require students to evaluate evidence, compare perspectives, analyse causes and justify conclusions. Words such as bias, reliability, significance, context, equity and consequence are especially transferable.

Avoid subject silos
Students sometimes learn hypothesis only in Science or inference only in English. That wastes transfer. Ask where else the reasoning operation appears. A concept understood in several subjects becomes more durable.
Build a cross-subject notebook
For each academic word, record the core meaning and one example from three subjects. This prevents the word from becoming trapped in a single classroom context.

- Select five academic words from the hero.
- Write the thinking job of each word.
- Create one English example.
- Create one Science example.
- Create one Humanities example.
- Return later and explain the shared concept without notes.

Why Transfer Improves Memory
Every new subject context creates another retrieval route. Empirical remembered through experiments, media claims and survey evidence is more durable than empirical remembered through one definition alone.
The Command-Word Trap
Do not assume a familiar academic verb requires exactly the same answer format in every subject. The reasoning job may be stable, but the evidence conventions differ. Evaluation in Science may emphasise method and reliability; evaluation in English may emphasise language, argument and reader positioning.
