Information, misinformation and disinformation
Misinformation is false or misleading information shared without necessarily intending harm. Disinformation is deliberately created or spread to deceive. Intent distinguishes the terms, though intent can be difficult to establish.
Source
A source is where information comes from. Ask who produced it, when, with what access to evidence, and for what purpose.
Credibility
Credibility is the degree to which a source deserves trust. Expertise, evidence, transparency and correction practices can strengthen credibility; popularity alone does not.
Verification
Verification checks whether a claim is supported. Look for original sources, independent corroboration, dates, context and evidence rather than relying on repetition.
Framing
Framing is how an issue is presented. Calling a measure an “investment” rather than a “cost” can guide interpretation without changing the underlying amount.
Rhetoric
Rhetoric is persuasive language. It may clarify a strong argument or disguise a weak one. Analyse emotional appeals, selective examples, labels and assumptions rather than treating persuasion as automatically dishonest.
Algorithm
An algorithm is a set of rules or procedures. Online recommendation algorithms decide which content to prioritise according to signals and objectives. Their outputs are shaped by design choices and available data.
Engagement
Engagement measures attention or interaction such as clicks, comments and watch time. Content that maximises engagement is not automatically content that maximises accuracy or well-being.
Bias
Bias is a systematic tendency that can influence selection, interpretation or judgement. Bias can arise in people, datasets, institutions or methods without always being deliberate.
Echo chamber and filter bubble
These terms describe environments where people encounter a narrowed range of views. Use them cautiously; not every personalised feed creates total isolation from opposing information.
Context collapse
A statement removed from its original context may appear to mean something different. Check what came before and after quotations, images or clips.
Virality
Virality describes rapid spread through networks. High circulation measures attention, not truth.
Anecdote versus empirical evidence
A compelling personal story can reveal experience but may not establish prevalence. Empirical evidence can show broader patterns when collected appropriately.
Ambiguity and equivocation
An ambiguous statement permits multiple interpretations. To equivocate is to use ambiguity in a way that avoids a clear commitment. The second term carries stronger implication about communication strategy.
Headline language
Headlines compress and compete for attention. Words such as “shocking”, “slams”, “crisis” or “miracle” may intensify framing. Rewrite the headline neutrally to see what evaluation disappears.
The lateral-reading habit
Instead of staying on one page and studying its appearance, check what independent sources say about the publisher, claim and evidence. Credibility often becomes clearer from outside the page.
The original-source habit
If an article says “a study proves”, look for the original research where possible. The source may say something narrower than the summary.
The uncertainty habit
Breaking events often contain incomplete information. “Reports indicate” or “the cause remains unclear” can be more accurate than premature certainty.
Responsible sharing
Before sharing, ask whether the claim is verified, whether context is preserved and whether urgency is real. Integrity in information includes resisting the reward of being first when accuracy is uncertain.

The Claim-to-Source Chain
- What exact claim is being made?
- Who is making or repeating it?
- What original evidence is cited?
- Does the original evidence support the same strength of claim?
- Has important context, limitation or uncertainty disappeared during retelling?
Framing Can Change Without Facts Changing
Two headlines can report the same event while directing attention differently. One may foreground cost; another may foreground benefit. Rewriting both in neutral language helps separate the event from rhetorical framing.
Algorithmic Amplification
Recommendation systems can increase the visibility of material that attracts interaction. That does not mean algorithms “believe” the content; it means design objectives can amplify some information patterns more than others. Vocabulary such as amplify, prioritise and incentivise is often more precise than saying technology simply “causes” misinformation.
