“This causes that” is one of the most common sentences in student writing. It is also one of the most dangerous. Sometimes the relationship really is causal. Sometimes one factor merely contributes. Sometimes it creates a condition in which another factor can operate. Sometimes two things move together for a completely different reason. The vocabulary we choose tells the reader what kind of relationship we believe exists.

Cause Is Not One Relationship
Imagine a student arrives late to school. Rain may have slowed traffic. A delayed bus may have increased travel time. Leaving home late may have made the delay more likely. A road accident may have triggered severe congestion. None of these descriptions is identical. One event can have several contributing factors, one immediate trigger and several background conditions.
Good causal vocabulary helps us separate them.

Cause vs Contribute
Cause is stronger than contribute. If you say “sleep deprivation causes poor concentration”, you imply a direct relationship. If you say “sleep deprivation can contribute to poor concentration”, you leave room for other factors such as stress, environment, nutrition or motivation.
In argumentative writing, contribute to is often more defensible because social outcomes usually have multiple causes. It is not weaker writing. It is more accurate causal modelling.
Trigger vs Cause
A trigger is often the immediate event that starts a response, but the deeper causes may already exist. A rude comment may trigger an argument, but long-standing resentment may explain why the reaction becomes intense. A market announcement may trigger a price fall, but underlying weakness may have made the system vulnerable.
This distinction helps students avoid shallow explanations that confuse the last event in a chain with the whole cause.
Enable vs Cause
To enable is to make something possible. It does not mean the enabled action must happen. Internet access enables online learning; it does not cause every student to learn effectively. A scholarship enables access to education; it does not guarantee achievement.
Words such as enable, permit, facilitate are extremely useful because they describe conditions rather than pretending every relationship is deterministic.
Reinforce vs Create
If a pattern already exists, something may reinforce it rather than create it. For example, recommendation algorithms may reinforce existing preferences by repeatedly presenting similar content. The preference existed first; the system strengthens it.
This distinction is powerful because many social, behavioural and educational effects are reinforcing rather than originating.
Exacerbate vs Cause
Exacerbate means make an existing problem worse. If inequality already exists, a policy may exacerbate it. If stress already exists, sleep loss may exacerbate it. Calling something an exacerbating factor is more precise than claiming it created the problem from nothing.
Mitigate, Alleviate and Eliminate
These words describe different degrees of reduction. Mitigate reduces harmful impact or risk. Alleviate reduces severity, suffering or difficulty. Eliminate removes something entirely. Students often overstate effects by writing “solve” or “eliminate” when the evidence shows only reduction.
“More frequent buses may alleviate overcrowding” is different from “More frequent buses will eliminate overcrowding.” The second claim requires much stronger evidence.
Necessary and Sufficient Conditions
A necessary condition must be present for an outcome to occur. A sufficient condition is enough to produce or establish the outcome. These terms help when causal reasoning becomes more exact.
Electricity may be necessary for a computer to operate, but electricity alone is not sufficient: functioning hardware and software are also required. In education, access to books may be necessary for some forms of study, but access is not sufficient for comprehension.
Correlation Is Not Automatically Causation
If two things vary together, we may describe an association or correlation. We should not immediately say one causes the other. Students who read widely may have larger vocabularies, but many factors could be involved: prior language ability, family environment, motivation, schooling or access to books.
Useful cautious language includes is associated with, correlates with, coincides with, tends to occur alongside. This protects the argument from causal overreach.
Confounding Factors
A confounding factor is an additional variable that may influence both the supposed cause and the outcome, making the relationship harder to interpret. Secondary 4 students do not need advanced statistics to understand the idea.
Suppose students who attend more enrichment classes also score higher. The classes may help, but family resources, prior achievement or motivation could also influence both attendance and results. Those possibilities complicate causal claims.
Reverse Causation
Sometimes we assume A causes B when B may partly cause A. Does stress reduce sleep, or does reduced sleep increase stress? Both directions may operate. Does confidence improve performance, or does good performance build confidence? Again, the relationship may be reciprocal.
Vocabulary such as reciprocal, bidirectional, feedback loop helps describe these cases.
Feedback Loops
A feedback loop occurs when an outcome influences the system that produced it, creating further effects. Poor sleep can reduce concentration; poor concentration can increase workload and stress; greater stress can further reduce sleep. The system becomes self-reinforcing.
Words such as reinforce, compound, amplify, perpetuate, cycle help students explain dynamic systems rather than one-direction chains.
Immediate vs Underlying Causes
An immediate cause is close to the event in time. An underlying cause operates deeper in the system. If a student fails a test because they misunderstood several key concepts, the immediate cause may be incorrect answers. Underlying factors might include weak foundational knowledge, ineffective revision or misunderstanding of the question format.
This distinction matters in problem solving because fixing the immediate symptom may leave the underlying mechanism untouched.
Short-Term and Long-Term Effects
Effects can change over time. A strict rule may produce immediate compliance but long-term resentment. A training programme may initially reduce productivity because people are learning, then improve performance later. Vocabulary such as immediate, short-term, transitional, cumulative, long-term, enduring helps students avoid treating time as irrelevant.
Intended and Unintended Consequences
Policies and actions often produce effects beyond their stated purpose. An intended consequence is part of the goal. An unintended consequence was not part of the plan. It may be beneficial, harmful or neutral.
A rule designed to reduce distraction might unintentionally disadvantage students who rely on devices for accessibility support. This does not automatically make the rule wrong, but it changes the evaluation.
Causal Chains
Many explanations become stronger when students show intermediate steps. “High housing costs cause stress” may be too compressed. A more complete chain might be: high housing costs increase financial pressure → financial pressure reduces discretionary income → reduced flexibility increases vulnerability to unexpected expenses → vulnerability can intensify stress.
The arrows are where causal vocabulary belongs: increase, reduce, constrain, expose, intensify.

Weak Cause-and-Effect Sentences
Weak: “Technology causes students to become lazy.” This sentence is broad, moralising and causally absolute.
Stronger: “Convenient access to automated answers can reinforce passive study habits when students consult them before attempting a problem independently.” The stronger version specifies condition, mechanism and degree.
Weak: “Poverty causes crime.”
Stronger: “Severe economic hardship can increase exposure to some risk factors associated with crime, although criminal behaviour cannot be explained by income alone.” The second version recognises multiple causation and avoids reducing people to a single factor.
Cause-and-Effect in Argumentative Writing
When you explain why a proposal will work, identify the mechanism. “Public transport is good because it reduces cars” is thin. “Reliable, frequent public transport can reduce private-car dependence by making alternative journeys more convenient and predictable” explains how the proposed cause produces the effect.
The mechanism is often the most important part of the paragraph.
Cause-and-Effect in Comprehension
Comprehension passages frequently embed causal relationships without using the word cause. Look for signals such as therefore, consequently, because, since, owing to, as a result, thereby, which in turn, leading to. But do not assume every sequence in time is causal. “After” does not automatically mean “because of”.
When paraphrasing, preserve strength. If the passage says a factor “contributed to”, do not rewrite it as “caused” unless the context supports that stronger relationship.
Cause-and-Effect in Oral Communication
Oral responses improve dramatically when students move beyond “because”. Try patterns such as: “One factor is…”, “This matters because it can lead to…”, “The effect may be stronger when…”, “It does not cause the problem by itself, but it can reinforce…”, “In the long term, this may result in…”.
These frames sound natural because they reflect real causal reasoning.
The Mechanism Test
After writing “A causes B”, ask: By what mechanism? If you cannot explain the route from A to B, the claim may be too compressed or speculative.
For example, “Reading improves vocabulary.” Mechanism: reading repeatedly exposes learners to words in meaningful contexts; repeated contextual encounters can strengthen recognition, semantic knowledge and collocation; retrieval and use can then expand active vocabulary. The mechanism turns a slogan into an explanation.
The Alternative-Cause Test
Ask: What else could produce this outcome? If several alternatives are plausible, use more cautious vocabulary. This does not destroy your explanation; it calibrates it.
The Direction Test
Ask whether B could influence A. If yes, consider reciprocal language. Confidence and performance, stress and sleep, trust and cooperation can all involve two-way relationships.
The Time Test
Ask whether the effect appears immediately, gradually or only after accumulation. Vocabulary such as cumulative, delayed, immediate, long-term, transient adds temporal precision.
Practice: Upgrade the Causal Verb
- A new rule makes an existing frustration worse. Choose between causes, exacerbates and eliminates.
- A scholarship makes university attendance possible for a student. Choose between enables and forces.
- A sudden announcement sets off panic in an already unstable market. Choose between triggers and creates from nothing.
- A habit strengthens a pattern that already exists. Choose between reinforces and originates.
- A policy reduces harm but does not remove it. Choose between mitigates and eliminates.
A Cause-and-Effect Paragraph Frame
A useful structure is: Factor → mechanism → immediate effect → wider consequence → condition or limitation.
Frequent notifications can fragment attention by repeatedly interrupting a learner’s focus. Each interruption requires the student to reorient to the task, which can reduce the depth of sustained work. Over time, this pattern may reinforce shorter attention cycles, particularly when notifications remain active during demanding study.

Causal Precision Is Intellectual Honesty
A good explanation does not make every relationship stronger than it is. It distinguishes direct causes from contributing factors, triggers from underlying conditions, associations from mechanisms, and mitigation from elimination.
Return to the Secondary 4 Top 100 Vocabulary core, then practise asking what each causal verb commits you to. If you write causes, can you explain the mechanism? If you write exacerbates, was the problem already present? If you write enables, are you describing possibility rather than certainty?
The more precisely you describe cause and effect, the more clearly you see the system itself. That is why causal vocabulary is not merely useful for English. It is a language for understanding how things happen.
Advanced Causal Reasoning Lab: Building Explanations That Do Not Skip the Middle
Causal writing becomes much stronger when the student stops treating cause and effect as a single arrow. Real explanations often include background conditions, immediate triggers, intermediate mechanisms, reinforcing factors, delays and side effects. Vocabulary helps you make those layers visible.
Build a causal chain, not a slogan
Weak: “Stress causes poor results.” A stronger model might be: prolonged stress can disrupt sleep and concentration; reduced concentration can make revision less efficient; inefficient revision may increase uncertainty before an examination; that uncertainty can further intensify stress. The relationship is no longer one arrow. It is a system.
Useful verbs for the intermediate links include disrupt, reduce, constrain, intensify, reinforce, amplify, undermine. These verbs are often more informative than the word cause itself.
Direct, Indirect and Mediated Effects
A direct effect has a comparatively short route from factor to outcome. An indirect effect travels through another step. Suppose a school extends library opening hours. The extension does not directly improve every student’s grades. It may increase access to study space; increased access may facilitate regular study; regular study may support better preparation. The middle steps matter.
When writing, phrases such as through, by enabling, which in turn, thereby, indirectly, through the mechanism of help reveal these intermediate links without making the sentence cumbersome.
Conditions That Change the Strength of an Effect
The same factor can have different effects under different conditions. Public transport may reduce private-car use more strongly where routes are frequent, reliable and well connected. Feedback may improve learning more strongly when students understand it and have time to act on it. Vocabulary such as particularly when, more likely where, under conditions of, depends on lets you show that the effect is conditional.

Confounder, Alternative Cause and Coincidence
If two things occur together, ask what else might explain both. Students who read more may have larger vocabularies, but motivation, prior attainment, family language environment and access to books may also matter. These possibilities do not prove reading is irrelevant. They tell you that the causal claim requires more care.
Useful language includes an alternative explanation is, another factor may be, the association may partly reflect, this does not isolate the effect of. Such phrases make an argument more robust because they show awareness of competing explanations.
Reverse Causation Workshop
Take a familiar statement: “Confidence improves performance.” Now reverse it: “Good performance builds confidence.” Both may be true. This suggests a reciprocal relationship rather than a one-way cause. Try the same with stress and sleep, trust and cooperation, fitness and motivation. The exercise trains you to question direction before choosing a causal verb.
Feedback Loops: When Effects Return to the Cause
In a feedback loop, the outcome changes the conditions that produced it. Low confidence can reduce participation; reduced participation can limit opportunities for success; fewer successful experiences can further weaken confidence. Time Lags and Cumulative Effects
Not every cause produces an immediate visible result. Some effects are delayed or cumulative. A small daily habit may produce little change in one week but a substantial effect over months. A policy may create immediate inconvenience while generating long-term benefit. Words such as gradually, cumulatively, over time, delayed, enduring, transient help you separate short-term from long-term causation.
Intended, Unintended and Secondary Consequences
An intervention may achieve its intended goal and still create secondary effects. A rule designed to reduce distraction may also make legitimate device use harder. A subsidy intended to increase participation may unintentionally favour groups already able to access the programme. Useful vocabulary includes unintended consequence, spillover effect, secondary effect, trade-off, knock-on effect.
These ideas help move evaluation beyond “did it work?” towards “what else happened because it worked?”

The Causal Map Exercise
Choose one outcome—poor sleep, traffic congestion, academic stress, food waste, misinformation. Draw at least three kinds of arrows: one for contributing factors, one for reinforcing factors and one for mitigating factors. Label each arrow with a verb. If every arrow says “causes”, the map is too low-resolution.
Then convert the map into a paragraph. This creates a natural bridge from visual reasoning to precise English.
Comprehension Transfer: Do Not Upgrade the Cause
If a passage says “may contribute to”, preserve that uncertainty in your answer. If it says “triggered”, do not automatically paraphrase as “was the sole cause of”. If it says “was associated with”, avoid causal language altogether unless another part of the passage supplies the mechanism. Precision in comprehension often means resisting the temptation to strengthen the relationship.
Oral Transfer: Explain the Middle
In oral discussion, whenever you say “because”, add one more step: “because X, which means Y, which can then lead to Z.” You do not need to make every answer long. The extra step teaches you to explain mechanisms rather than jump from cause to conclusion.
