A Presentation Needs a Spine
A strong professional presentation can usually be reduced to one sentence: “Because X has changed, and the evidence shows Y, we recommend Z despite trade-off Q.” Slides support that spine. They do not replace it.
Narrative Is Not Storytelling Decoration
Narrative is the causal and logical connection among facts. If the evidence does not support causation, the narrative should not invent it. A presentation can be memorable without pretending uncertainty has disappeared.
Demonstrate vs Indicate vs Suggest
Demonstrate is the strongest of the three and implies clear support. Indicate points toward a conclusion. Suggest is more tentative. “The pilot demonstrates feasibility” may be justified even when “the pilot proves long-term value” is not.
Salient vs Material vs Interesting
A fact can be interesting without being salient to the current decision. It can be salient without being material enough to change the decision. Senior presenters need the discipline to leave out interesting material when it competes with decision-critical evidence.
Visuals Should Carry Meaning
A chart should answer a question. “What changed?” suggests a trend line. “Which option performs best across criteria?” suggests a comparison. “Where does the process fail?” suggests a flow or bottleneck map. Decorative charts increase visual activity without increasing understanding.
The One-Slide Test
If a slide needs a paragraph of spoken apology before the audience can understand why it exists, the slide probably lacks a clear job. Title slides with claims, not topics: “Testing Delay Does Not Affect Launch Date” is more informative than “Testing Update.”
Speaking to Experts vs Executives
Experts often want method, boundary conditions and mechanism. Executives often want consequence, uncertainty, reversibility, ownership and decision. Neither audience is “smarter.” They are performing different jobs.
Q&A Is Part of the Presentation
Do not treat questions as an interruption. They reveal where the audience’s model differs from yours. Good responses acknowledge the question, answer directly, add necessary qualification and stop. Long defensive answers usually reduce confidence.
Answer, Address and Redirect
Answer when you have the answer. Address when the issue is broader than a yes/no response. Redirect when the question moves away from the purpose: “That is important for implementation; for today’s approval decision, the relevant point is whether the control reduces residual risk.”
Concede Without Collapsing
“Yes, Option A is cheaper initially. Our recommendation remains Option B because the cost difference is reversible while the concentration risk is not.” Concession shows you have seen the competing evidence. It can make the recommendation stronger.
Failure Mode 1: Topic Titles
“Revenue,” “Market,” “Risks,” and “Next Steps” force the audience to infer the point. Turn them into claims: “Revenue Growth Is Concentrated in Two Customers.” The title becomes part of the reasoning.
Failure Mode 2: Data Dump
Showing every number may feel transparent but can hide the material signal. State what the audience should notice, then show enough evidence for scrutiny.
Failure Mode 3: Reading the Slide
If the slide contains the complete speech, the audience must choose between reading and listening. Use the slide for structure and evidence; use speech for interpretation.
Failure Mode 4: Fake Certainty
Presenters often fear that caveats weaken authority. In serious work, calibrated uncertainty strengthens credibility: “We have high confidence in the direction, moderate confidence in the magnitude, and low confidence beyond 18 months.”
