The one-sentence truth: Vocabulary grows faster when words are learned as families of nearby meanings rather than isolated dictionary entries.
Paraphrasing requires lexical flexibility, but flexibility without boundaries creates error. Semantic families solve both problems: they give you alternatives while forcing you to notice differences.
Causation family
Cause produces. Contribute to supplies partial causal weight. Drive pushes a process. Catalyse accelerates. Exacerbate worsens an existing condition. Enable makes possible.
Reduction family
Prevent stops occurrence. Mitigate reduces severity. Alleviate relieves burden. Dampen reduces intensity. Offset counterbalances another effect.
Certainty family
Possible, plausible, probable, likely, well-established and certain form a rough ladder. Preserve position on the ladder.
Evidence family
Illustrates, suggests, indicates, supports, corroborates and establishes differ in evidential force.
Limitation family
Constraint restricts options. Caveat adds a warning. Exception sits outside a pattern. Qualification narrows a claim. Shortcoming identifies a weakness.
Significance family
Marginal, material, substantial, consequential and decisive describe different weights. Do not flatten them to “important”.
Build contrast cards
For each word, record one definition, two collocations, one near-neighbour and one sentence explaining the difference. This trains discrimination, which is the real skill behind good paraphrase.
