The Voynich Manuscript is difficult partly because so much of it refuses to identify itself.
Then the zodiac pages arrive.
A fish looks like Pisces.
A ram looks like Aries.
A bull looks like Taurus.
Twins look like Gemini.
A crab-like creature stands where Cancer belongs.
Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius follow in recognisable form.
For once, the manuscript seems to say:
You know what this is.
And that is exactly when the danger begins.
Recognising a zodiac sign is not the same as knowing what the zodiac is doing.
It may organise time.
It may classify people.
It may support astrology.
It may support medicine.
It may mark a calendar.
It may combine several of those jobs.
Or it may be doing something that has become unfamiliar because the text that once explained the system can no longer be read.
The zodiac pages give us one of the clearest examples of the difference between identifying a symbol and recovering its function.
That difference will carry this entire article.
Quick Read
One-sentence answer: the Voynich zodiac pages contain securely recognisable zodiac iconography arranged in concentric ring systems with many small star-holding human figures and later month-name annotations, but those features do not by themselves establish whether the pages were primarily calendrical, astrological, medical, biographical, mnemonic or part of a larger hybrid information system.
- The core zodiac sequence occupies the pages conventionally identified from f70v2 through f73v.
- The surviving sequence runs from Pisces through Sagittarius; Capricorn and Aquarius are not present in the surviving zodiac series.
- The central zodiac emblems are much more securely identifiable than most Voynich plant images.
- Many rings contain approximately thirty small human figures, most apparently female, often holding star-like objects.
- The figures sit in repeated compartments or positions around the rings, creating a strong counting and classification problem.
- The short text beside or associated with these figures should not automatically be treated as personal names, even though naming is one plausible function.
- Month names were added in a different hand to the zodiac pages. Conventional readings resemble Romance-language month names and have often been discussed in relation to northern French or neighbouring varieties.
- Those month names are valuable later-use evidence, but their hand should not be silently merged with the main Voynich writing system.
- Recognisable zodiac imagery establishes that the maker or later user operated inside a cultural world where zodiac signs were meaningful.
- It does not establish the exact astrological doctrine or practical use.
- Known fifteenth-century medical manuscripts combine zodiacal influences, regimen, bloodletting, recipes and other medical material, demonstrating that medicine and astrology could coexist in practical books.
- That historical coexistence makes medical-astrological interpretations plausible, not proven.
- The zodiac pages contain figures visually related to the human figures in Quire 13, but visual similarity does not establish that both groups have the same semantic role.
- The familiar “thirty figures around a sign” pattern invites calendar-day interpretations, degree-name interpretations, person lists and other counting models; each requires independent evidence.
- A strong theory must explain not only the central sign but also the rings, figure counts, star forms, labels, text distribution, duplicate signs and missing signs.
The zodiac pages are therefore unusually generous.
They give us recognisable symbols.
What they refuse to give us is the legend.
Recognition Is a Different Evidentiary State From Resemblance
On a herbal folio, a root may resemble a dragon to one viewer and a pair of scissors to another.
Zodiac iconography is different.
Aries as a ram is part of a stable historical sign system.
Taurus as a bull belongs to the same system.
Gemini as paired human figures belongs to the same system.
When several signs appear in the correct zodiacal sequence, identification becomes much stronger than isolated visual resemblance.
This is useful because it gives us a comparatively secure semantic island inside the manuscript.
But the island is smaller than it first appears.
We know the central emblem is a zodiac sign.
We do not automatically know what the surrounding thirty figures represent.
We do not automatically know what their stars represent.
We do not automatically know what the labels say.
We do not automatically know whether the whole ring is chronological.
Secure recognition at the centre does not radiate certainty outward without additional evidence.
The Surviving Sequence Is Already Strange
The surviving zodiac sequence does not give us twelve tidy signs on twelve tidy pages.
Pisces appears.
Aries appears across more than one diagram.
Taurus likewise occupies more than one diagram.
Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius follow.
Capricorn and Aquarius are absent from the surviving run.
This creates several possibilities.
- Leaves are missing.
- The original sequence was incomplete.
- The zodiac cycle served a purpose that did not require all twelve signs in the surviving arrangement.
- Some signs were represented in a different way now lost or overlooked.
The manuscript’s physical losses make the first possibility especially serious.
But absence should remain absence until physical reconstruction can say more.
We should not invent the missing pages merely because a zodiac normally has twelve signs.
Why Aries and Taurus Are Split Matters
One of the most interesting visual facts is that Aries and Taurus are represented in more than one diagram.
This is not what a modern twelve-sign poster would lead us to expect.
Splitting a sign can indicate several kinds of organisation.
- different portions of a month;
- different groups of people;
- different degree ranges;
- different calendrical periods;
- different source units;
- or a physical-layout constraint.
The split is therefore a clue about granularity.
The system may care about something smaller than one whole zodiac sign.
But again, the clue does not name the subdivision.
A calendrical interpretation should explain why some signs split and others do not.
A degree-based interpretation should predict figure counts and ordering.
A person-list interpretation should explain why the zodiac sign governs the grouping.
Every candidate model inherits the burden created by the split.
Thirty Small Figures Is a Number Before It Is a Calendar
The small human figures arranged around the zodiac rings are among the manuscript’s most provocative repeated units.
Many diagrams contain around thirty.
Thirty immediately evokes days in a month.
It also evokes thirty degrees in one zodiac sign.
Both are historically meaningful numbers.
And therefore both are dangerous as instant explanations.
The visual observation is:
a ring contains many repeated human units, often near a count of thirty.
The semantic hypotheses include:
- days;
- zodiacal degrees;
- named stars;
- individual people;
- birth records;
- lunar stations or other calendrical units;
- technical slots in a classification system.
A count can constrain a theory without selecting one.
That is exactly what happens here.
Thirty Days and Thirty Degrees Compete for the Same Evidence
This is a perfect identifiability problem.
If a ring contains thirty units, both a month model and a degree model can fit.
The count alone cannot distinguish them.
So we need a discriminator.
A day model might predict:
- different handling for months of different lengths;
- special markers for calendar boundaries;
- relationship to month names;
- perhaps recurring seven-day or lunar structures.
A degree model might predict:
- exactly thirty positions irrespective of month length;
- consistent ordering around all signs;
- relationships to known degree-name or decan traditions;
- stable subdivision independent of civil calendar months.
Notice how the question improves when two theories are forced to compete.
“There are thirty figures” becomes only the first measurement.
The real work begins with the different predictions.
The Figures Are Mostly Feminine—and That Does Not Make Them Patients
The ring figures are often described as nymphs.
The nickname is convenient and misleading.
It describes small mostly female-looking human figures in a manuscript famous for small mostly female-looking human figures.
But “nymph” imports mythological overtones that may not belong to the original system.
Similarly, female-looking figures invite medical and reproductive interpretations.
Those interpretations become especially tempting because Quire 13 contains many comparable female figures around pools and tubes.
Yet visual similarity gives us several possible relationships.
- same semantic class;
- same artistic convention for generic people;
- same scribe or illustrator;
- same receiver group;
- same symbolic role;
- or simply the manuscript’s preferred human icon.
The figures may eventually connect zodiac and Quire 13 meaningfully.
They do not do so automatically merely because they look alike.
What Are the Stars?
Many ring figures hold star-like objects.
The visual word “star” immediately encourages celestial meaning.
That is reasonable inside a zodiac context.
But even celestial meaning leaves several levels unresolved.
- Does each star represent a physical star?
- Does it represent one zodiacal degree?
- Is it a badge showing membership in the ring?
- Does it represent a day?
- Is it a visual marker attached to a named person?
- Does colour or point count classify the unit?
The star is therefore not one semantic object simply because it is recognisable as star-like.
A five-point star on a modern hotel and a five-point star on a national flag are visually similar signs with radically different jobs.
Function comes from system behaviour.
Star Morphology May Carry Classification
Stars in the Voynich Manuscript are not all identical.
Point count varies.
Some are coloured.
Some have central dots.
Some later stars in Quire 20 have tails.
This creates a potentially useful cross-manuscript variable.
Do star forms correspond to different jobs?
Or are they decorative variants?
Does a star type recur with a textual type?
Does the same star morphology appear in both zodiac and recipe-like contexts?
If yes, the recurrence could represent a shared information marker rather than shared celestial content.
This is why the later Quire 20 stars become relevant without proving that Quire 20 is astrological.
Same shape can mean same object.
It can also mean same document function.
The Month Names Are a Different Layer of the Manuscript
The zodiac pages contain one of the most tantalising readable elements in the entire codex.
Month names.
Conventional readings include forms corresponding to March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.
Their spelling has prompted long arguments about Romance-language geography, with northern French and related possibilities receiving particular attention.
But the first thing to remember is physical and palaeographic:
the month-name hand is not simply the main Voynich script.
It is generally treated as a later addition.
That makes the names enormously useful—and differently useful.
They can tell us that a later reader interpreted the central emblems in calendrical-month terms.
They may help reconstruct later custody or reader communities.
They do not automatically reveal the language of the main text.
A later reader can annotate an older book in their own language.
Later Annotation Is Evidence of Reception
Imagine finding an Arabic manuscript with a seventeenth-century Latin note in the margin.
The Latin tells us something about a later reader.
It does not make the Arabic original Latin.
The same logic applies here.
The month names show that someone recognised—or imposed—a conventional month relationship on the zodiac signs.
That is important reception evidence.
It may also support the proposition that the zodiac emblems were intended to be read in ordinary zodiacal sequence rather than as purely decorative animals.
But the annotation’s date and language must remain separate from the main production layer.
Later certainty about a symbol does not necessarily recover earlier function.
The Month Names Do Not Prove the Manuscript Was Made in France
This is where reception evidence can be accidentally converted into provenance.
Suppose the month spellings are best explained by a northern French or neighbouring Romance hand.
What follows?
At minimum, a person using that linguistic convention encountered the book and annotated it.
What does not automatically follow?
- The parchment was made in northern France.
- The main text was written there.
- The illustrator was French.
- The main Voynich language is French.
- The entire book was designed for a French reader.
A book can travel before it is annotated.
A later reader can belong to a different linguistic world from the maker.
Month-name geography is therefore a clue about a layer, not a birth certificate for the codex.
The Zodiac Is Not Automatically Astrology
Modern language often treats zodiac and astrology as synonyms.
Historically, zodiacal signs participate in several systems.
Astronomers use the ecliptic.
Calendars use zodiacal imagery.
Astrologers interpret zodiacal relations.
Medical practitioners can use zodiacal correspondences.
Artists use zodiac signs decoratively.
So the presence of zodiac signs securely identifies an iconographic system.
It does not independently prove horoscope practice or predictive astrology.
A stronger astrological argument would need features such as houses, aspects, planetary relationships, degree systems, electional timing or other historically diagnostic structure.
Without those, “astrological” remains a reasonable broad description rather than a decoded job description.
Known Fifteenth-Century Medicine Really Did Use Zodiacal Thinking
It is important not to overcorrect.
Medical-astrological interpretations are not absurd modern inventions.
British Library manuscripts from the fifteenth century preserve exactly the kind of intellectual coexistence that makes such hypotheses historically plausible.
Add MS 34111 includes a medical miscellany with zodiacal influences on the human body.
Sloane MS 282 includes an astrologico-medical schema among medical works.
Harley MS 3843 combines calendar and astrological tables with bloodletting, zodiac-related regimen material and health texts.
Harley MS 2375 is explicitly a compilation of medical and astrological texts and recipes.
This tells us:
a fifteenth-century manuscript world in which medicine, zodiacal influence, regimen and recipes coexist is historically ordinary enough to consider seriously.
What it does not tell us is that Voynich instantiated the same programme.
Comparator manuscripts establish possibility.
Voynich internal evidence must establish identity.
Medical Astrology Creates a Plausible Bridge to Quire 13
The zodiac pages contain star-holding human figures.
Quire 13 contains many human figures among pools, tubes and connected structures.
Known historical medicine sometimes links bodies and zodiacal influence.
This creates a coherent hypothesis family:
the zodiac pages classify timing or human conditions that connect to the body-related material.
That is a strong research question.
It is not yet a strong conclusion.
To strengthen it, we would want:
- shared textual vocabulary beyond generic common tokens;
- repeated visual markers with stable roles;
- corresponding counts or categories;
- historical analogues that match the same architecture;
- predictive relationships between zodiac positions and Quire 13 structures.
Historical plausibility is a bridge candidate.
Internal prediction decides whether the bridge can carry weight.
The Zodiac Is Not Automatically the Master Clock for the Whole Book
Once medicine and astrology are historically linked, another temptation appears.
Perhaps the zodiac controls everything.
Plants are gathered under signs.
Remedies are prepared under signs.
Baths are administered under signs.
Recipes are indexed by signs.
This produces an elegant master-clock theory.
Our retained work did not justify promoting that elegance into established architecture.
The manuscript does not currently supply a decoded cross-reference proving that every other page family routes through the zodiac.
Visual categories, physical gatherings and textual regimes do not line up as one simple zodiac-controlled sequence.
The zodiac may still participate in a larger system.
Participation is not mastery.
Calendar and Zodiac Are Related but Not Identical
The later month names make calendrical reading attractive.
Yet zodiac signs do not align perfectly with civil calendar months.
A zodiac sign crosses month boundaries in modern Western calendar reckoning.
Historical calendar conventions add further complexity.
Therefore a month-based theory must specify what exactly the sign-month mapping represents.
Is the month label merely a later mnemonic?
Does the original ring encode thirty civil days?
Does it encode thirty zodiacal degrees later annotated with the corresponding month name?
Is the later annotator simplifying a more technical original system?
The month names narrow interpretation.
They do not collapse the alternatives.
The Ring May Be an Index Rather Than a Story
Modern readers tend to read diagrams narratively.
Start here.
Move clockwise.
Finish there.
But a ring can also be an index.
Each slot can point to a category.
Each figure can be an address.
Each label can identify a record.
Nothing needs to “happen” around the circle.
This possibility matters because the zodiac pages contain repeated labels and figure units that look catalogue-like as much as narrative.
A strong chronological theory should therefore demonstrate direction.
Clockwise order cannot simply be assumed because the diagram is circular.
The Labels Could Be Names—But Names of What?
Short strings sit beside or within many of the ring figures.
They look like labels.
A label invites a noun.
A person name.
A star name.
A degree name.
A day name.
A category code.
A place.
A technical abbreviation.
The structural fact is that short strings are associated with repeated visual units.
The semantic job remains open.
This is where a future decipherment could become especially powerful.
If a stable textual rule could read several labels before their figures were interpreted, the visual system could independently validate the reading.
Until then, “label” is safer than “name”.
The Same Label System May Cross Visual Sections
Short labels also occur beside plant fragments, human figures and diagram components elsewhere in the manuscript.
This creates an exciting possibility:
perhaps labels form a cross-manuscript reference layer.
But the phrase “reference layer” must remain broader than “same word means same object”.
A repeated string can occur for many reasons.
- same entity;
- same class;
- same grammatical marker;
- same code prefix;
- same common word;
- same generated pattern.
Cross-section recurrence is valuable because it creates testable relationships.
It becomes semantic only when visual or textual behaviour independently agrees.
The Zodiac Pages Do Not Sit Outside the Currier Problem
The astronomical and zodiacal material is one of the places where simple A/B classification becomes less tidy.
Some pages have traditionally been associated with A-like or B-like properties, while recent statistical work has suggested intermediate or additional regimes for some astronomical/cosmological material.
This is important because it resists one easy story:
zodiac section = one language = one topic = one writer.
The manuscript is not that cooperative.
Textual classification, page morphology, hand and physical construction should remain separate axes.
The zodiac pages may be semantically coherent while containing textual variation caused by another variable.
Or the visual category itself may contain more than one textual job.
Both possibilities remain open.
The Zodiac Figures and Quire 13 Figures May Share an Artistic Vocabulary
One of the strongest visual crossovers in the manuscript is the recurring small female-looking human figure.
In the zodiac pages, figures inhabit ring compartments and hold stars.
In Quire 13, figures stand in pools, sit in containers and interact with tubes.
This tells us that the manuscript possesses a reusable human-icon convention.
That is already useful.
But reusable visual vocabulary can function at several levels.
The same figure style can represent:
- different people;
- different states of one kind of entity;
- generic humans in several domains;
- conceptual agents rather than literal people.
Same artistic vocabulary is weaker than same semantic identity.
The difference matters enormously when building a medical master theory.
Birth Records Are an Attractive Human-Figure Hypothesis
If each star-holding figure is an individual and the zodiac sign defines a time interval, a birth-record interpretation becomes tempting.
Perhaps each figure represents a person born under a sign.
Perhaps the label is a name.
Perhaps figure attributes encode sex, status or another property.
This is a coherent model.
Then the evidentiary bill arrives.
- Why around thirty per sign?
- Why the specific duplicated Aries and Taurus structure?
- Why mostly feminine figures?
- Why stars in their hands?
- Do labels behave like personal names across pages?
- Is there any genealogical or biographical structure elsewhere?
An interpretation becomes stronger when it explains the awkward details rather than merely the central sign.
Birth records remain a possibility, not an established reading.
Degree Names Are Attractive for the Opposite Reason
A zodiac sign contains thirty degrees.
Thirty ring units therefore invite degree-based interpretations.
Historical astrology also contains traditions that assign images, names or qualities to zodiac subdivisions.
This creates another coherent model.
But a degree-name theory must do more than match the number thirty.
- Do all relevant rings preserve thirty slots?
- Does the order correspond to a known historical degree tradition?
- Do labels show repeated structural properties expected from names?
- Do images encode degree imagery or qualities?
- Can a candidate tradition be dated before or near the manuscript’s production period?
The final question is especially important.
A post-medieval degree-name list can accidentally produce impressive matches if used without chronological control.
Historical availability is part of the evidence, not an optional footnote.
A Candidate Pool Can Contaminate the Result
This is a general lesson from zodiac work.
If you assume the month names are Occitan, you search Occitan astrological materials.
If you assume northern French, you search northern French materials.
If you assume medical astrology, you search medical degree lists.
Then the strongest match in the chosen pool appears to validate the assumption that selected the pool.
The loop is subtle.
A safer workflow is conceptually simple:
- Record the Voynich features independently.
- State the candidate-generating assumptions.
- Search multiple plausible historical regions or traditions.
- Apply chronological controls.
- Compare the best match against strong alternatives.
The public lesson is not a proprietary test recipe.
It is a simple epistemic rule:
The search space you choose can manufacture the winner.
The Zodiac Pages Are Not a Free Provenance Detector
Zodiac iconography varies by region and period.
That makes art-historical comparison useful.
But zodiac signs are also widely shared.
A ram is not uniquely Paduan.
A bull is not uniquely French.
Paired figures for Gemini do not identify one workshop.
Provenance needs diagnostic combinations.
Specific drawing conventions.
Specific clothing.
Specific heraldic or architectural forms.
Specific textual forms.
And ideally documentary support.
Recognisable iconography narrows culture.
It rarely names a city by itself.
What Survived From the Zodiac Work
- The central zodiac emblems are among the most securely recognisable semantic images in the manuscript.
- The ring architecture is highly deliberate.
- Repeated human figures form a genuine countable unit.
- Star-holding is systematic enough to matter.
- Approximately thirty positions in many rings create a real calendrical or degree-scale constraint.
- Aries and Taurus subdivision creates evidence of finer granularity than one-sign-per-page.
- Later month names confirm a later reader understood the sequence in conventional month/zodiac terms.
- The month-name hand should remain separate from the main Voynich script.
- Historical medicine and astrology could coexist in fifteenth-century practical manuscripts.
- Visual links to Quire 13 justify comparison without proving shared semantic identity.
- Cross-manuscript star and label recurrence remains a useful structural research lane.
- The zodiac pages are strong enough to constrain theories of the whole manuscript without functioning as a master key.
That is already an unusually rich set of surviving results.
What Did Not Survive as Established Knowledge
- A proven medical calendar.
- A proven harvesting schedule for the herbal pages.
- A proven treatment-timing system for Quire 13.
- A demonstrated set of thirty named zodiacal degrees.
- A demonstrated list of thirty people or birth records per sign.
- A proof that every star is a literal celestial star.
- A proof that the month-name language identifies manuscript origin.
- A proof that zodiac imagery acts as the master control layer for the whole codex.
- A direct translation of the figure labels.
- A secure provenance from zodiac style alone.
Those ideas remain hypotheses of different strengths.
Their survival as hypotheses is not failure.
It is the correct claim state.
A Better Zodiac-Page Analysis
1. Identify only the secure iconography
Separate recognisable zodiac emblems from ambiguous peripheral motifs.
2. Count the repeated units
Record figures, stars, compartments and ring divisions before assigning a calendrical meaning.
3. Map ring topology
Which units occupy which rings? Which connect inward or outward? Is order visible?
4. Keep annotation layers separate
Month names belong to a different hand and should not be merged casually with the main text.
5. Compare candidate systems
Calendar, degree, personal-record and astrological models should be made to predict different observations.
6. Use historical controls
Known fifteenth-century medical and astrological miscellanies show what combinations were possible without proving Voynich function.
7. Cross-check text and images independently
A textual interpretation should predict figure or ring properties not used to invent it.
8. Only then connect outward
Ask whether the same markers recur in Quire 13, the pharmaceutical pages or Quire 20.
This sequence keeps the recognisable zodiac from colonising the rest of the manuscript too early.
What Would Make a Zodiac Theory Strong?
- It explains why these zodiac signs appear and why two are absent.
- It explains Aries and Taurus duplication.
- It predicts the number of ring figures.
- It explains star morphology and figure attributes.
- It gives a stable role to short labels.
- It treats the later month names as the correct historical layer.
- It distinguishes civil days from zodiacal degrees or another thirty-unit system.
- It accounts for textual variation in the zodiac material.
- It uses historically available comparison systems.
- It predicts relationships to other Voynich sections rather than assuming them.
- It can be falsified by a pattern that should not occur under the theory.
A theory that explains only the central animal has explained the easiest part.
The difficult part is the system around the animal.
What Would Count as a Real Zodiac Breakthrough?
Imagine a stable decipherment rule independently reads ten ring labels.
The readings correspond to an historically attested set of degree names.
The set predates or matches the manuscript’s production window.
The order matches the ring positions without rearrangement.
The same rule predicts labels on a sign not used to build the key.
The prediction succeeds.
That would be powerful.
Or imagine the ring units correlate exactly with civil days, including historically appropriate handling of month lengths, and their texts predict dated entries elsewhere.
Also powerful.
The point is not which breakthrough we prefer.
The point is what makes it a breakthrough:
independent prediction closes the gap between recognisable icon and hidden function.
Primary School: Symbol and Job Are Different Questions
Show a child a familiar symbol.
A star.
Ask:
What is this shape?
They answer:
A star.
Now show a star on a hotel rating, a national flag, a map and a school worksheet.
Ask:
Does it do the same job every time?
No.
The child has just learned the key Voynich zodiac lesson.
Recognising a symbol is easier than recovering its function.
Lower Secondary: Thirty of Something
Give Secondary 1 or Secondary 2 students a ring with thirty dots.
Ask for five possible meanings.
- days;
- degrees;
- people;
- stations;
- tasks.
Then ask what extra clue would distinguish the meanings.
Dates would help a day model.
Angles would help a degree model.
Names would help a people model.
The learner discovers that a number constrains interpretation without choosing it.
That is exactly the intellectual situation around the Voynich rings.
Upper Secondary: Separate Contemporary Evidence From Later Annotation
By Secondary 3 and Secondary 4, students can work with historical layers.
Give them three statements:
- The central image is a zodiac sign.
- A later hand wrote a month name near it.
- The main text is written in an unidentified script.
Ask what each statement tells us about:
- the original maker;
- a later reader;
- the language of the main text;
- the later movement of the book.
Students quickly see that the same page can preserve several historical moments.
This is manuscript archaeology.
JC and Adult Readers: Use Identifiability, Not Fit
At a higher level, the zodiac pages are a clean example of model identifiability.
Thirty figures fit a day model.
Thirty figures fit a degree model.
Star-holding figures fit astrology.
Star-holding figures can also be category markers inside a calendar.
Female figures fit medical-reproductive interpretations.
They can also be a generic human icon used throughout the manuscript.
The question is not which theory can fit.
Several can.
The question is which observation makes the theories disagree.
That observation is the research target.
A Parent and Teacher Guide
The zodiac pages are one of the best places to teach a child the difference between confidence in an object and confidence in a system.
- Identify what is genuinely recognisable. The central ram can be called Aries with much more confidence than an unknown root can be called mandrake.
- Stop at the edge of the recognition. Do not let Aries automatically turn the whole page into a horoscope.
- Count before naming. Thirty figures is a measurement before it is a month.
- Separate historical layers. Later month names tell us about a later reader.
