What Is Revision? | How the Mind Changes a Model Without Throwing Everything Away

You believe the café closes at 8 p.m.

You arrive at 7:30.

The lights are off.

A sign says:

New hours: 7 a.m.–7 p.m.

What should happen inside your head?

You should not conclude that cafés no longer exist.

You should not erase every memory of this place.

You should revise one part of the model:

closing time changed.

This small act contains one of cognition’s most important abilities.

We must change enough to fit the evidence without destroying everything that still works.

Revision is the process of changing a belief, representation, rule or model in response to new evidence, error, context or contradiction.

Good revision has two responsibilities:

  • change what no longer fits;
  • preserve what remains supported.

This article is about cognitive and model revision, not school “revision” in the sense of reviewing material for examinations. Those are related only indirectly.

The Minimum-Change Principle

When evidence contradicts a model, do not automatically rewrite everything.

Ask:

What is the smallest revision that explains the evidence without breaking what still works?
