Why Secondary 1 Vocabulary Becomes More Abstract — and How to Learn It

You can point to a chair. You cannot point to “bias”.

You can show a student a red apple and teach red. You can demonstrate run. You can place two books beside one another and teach adjacent. But try to point directly at consequence, criteria, context, influence, assumption or interpretation.

There is nothing physical to point at. The student has to build the meaning from relationships.

This is one reason Secondary 1 vocabulary can suddenly feel more difficult. The challenge is not simply that the words are longer. More of them describe ideas that cannot be understood from a single picture or object.

Wait, what exactly is an abstract word?

A concrete word refers fairly directly to something we can perceive: table, rain, bicycle, whisper, red. Abstract vocabulary refers more strongly to ideas, qualities, relationships, categories, judgements or processes that must be mentally constructed.

The difference is not absolute. Even concrete words contain concepts, and abstract ideas can be illustrated with examples. But the distinction is useful because it explains why “look at the picture and remember the word” stops being enough.

Abstract vocabulary often describes relationships

Take consequence. You cannot understand it by looking at one object. You need at least two states linked through time or causation: something happens, and something follows.

Take bias. The word becomes meaningful when there are alternatives, a tendency and some kind of unequal weighting.

Take criteria. The concept exists because something is being judged according to standards.

These words therefore become easier when students learn the structure of the relationship, not only a definition.

Definitions can hide the difficulty

A dictionary may define criteria as “standards by which something is judged.” That sounds simple. But to use the word, the learner needs to understand several hidden ideas:

  • there is something to be judged;
  • there is a purpose for the judgement;
  • there are standards;
  • different standards can produce different conclusions;
  • the standards should be relevant to the purpose.

Once these relations are visible, the word becomes much more useful. A student can discuss criteria for selecting a team member, evaluating a source, choosing a device or assessing a proposal.

Build the concept before forcing the word

One effective sequence is:

  1. Situation: begin with something understandable.
  2. Relationship: identify what is happening between the parts.
  3. Label: attach the vocabulary word.
  4. Contrast: compare with a nearby concept.
  5. Transfer: find the same relationship somewhere else.

For consequence, begin with a student forgetting an umbrella and getting soaked. Then identify the relationship: an earlier action or condition leads to a later result. Only then attach the label. Next distinguish consequence from intention. Finally transfer the concept to environmental, historical or social examples.

Worked example: “bias”

Imagine two students reviewing the same school event. One reports every mistake made by Team A and ignores similar mistakes made by Team B. The other reports both sides using the same standard.

Now the word bias has something to attach to.

  • Core relation: unequal tendency or weighting.
  • Contrast: bias is not simply disagreement.
  • Question: Can bias be unconscious? Yes; a person does not always need to intend it.
  • Transfer: news selection, surveys, personal judgement, experiments and algorithms can all raise questions about bias.

The student now possesses more than “bias = prejudice”. The concept has internal structure.

Worked example: “context”

The sentence “That was brave” seems clear until we ask what happened. A child speaking truth despite social pressure, a person entering danger unnecessarily and a player attempting a difficult move may all be described as brave, but the surrounding circumstances determine what the judgement means.

Context is the surrounding information or circumstances that help us interpret an event, statement or action.

The word becomes powerful in comprehension because quotations rarely interpret themselves. It becomes powerful in writing because a claim can change meaning when circumstances change. It becomes powerful in real life because short clips, isolated statistics and partial messages can mislead when removed from their context.

Worked example: “ambiguous”

Consider the instruction:

“Put the book on the table beside the chair.”

Which object is beside the chair — the table or the book? Depending on the situation, more than one reading may be possible. That is a useful doorway into ambiguity.

Now compare ambiguous with vague. A vague statement lacks enough precision. An ambiguous statement permits more than one interpretation. Something can be both, but the concepts are not identical.

Why examples should vary

If a student always meets criteria in scholarship examples, the concept may become accidentally tied to scholarships. Variation reveals the deeper structure.

When the same relationship survives across changing examples, the student is learning the concept rather than memorising one sentence.

Use non-examples, not only examples

Abstract vocabulary becomes clearer when students study its boundary.

Is every result a consequence? Often, but the word is especially useful when the result follows from an action or condition. Is every opinion biased? No. Is every confusing sentence ambiguous? No; it may simply be badly written. Is every guess an assumption? Not necessarily; an assumption is something taken as true for the purpose of reasoning or action without sufficient proof.

A non-example forces the learner to ask what feature is essential.

Turn abstract nouns back into situations

Academic language often compresses whole situations into nouns: influence, interpretation, assumption, consequence, contribution, assessment. When a word feels opaque, unpack it.

Abstract vocabulary and comprehension

Secondary comprehension increasingly asks students to move beyond literal events. A passage may show actions; the answer may require a concept.

A character hears both sides before deciding. The concept might be fairness or impartiality. A writer includes only supporting evidence. The concept may be bias. A paragraph never states its main message directly but strongly points towards it. The reader must infer.

Conceptual vocabulary therefore helps the learner compress patterns in text into answerable ideas.

Abstract vocabulary and writing

In narrative writing, abstract words help a student plan themes and motivations: responsibility, loyalty, consequence, conflict, regret, influence. In expository writing, they help organise relationships: cause, factor, criteria, alternative, context. In argumentative writing, they help students evaluate: evidence, assumption, bias, justification, relevance.

The strongest writing often moves between concrete and abstract levels. A concrete example makes an idea visible; an abstract term explains what the example means.

Concrete: “The school opened the computer lab until 6 p.m.”

Abstract: “This improved access for students who lacked suitable facilities at home.”

Both levels matter.

Abstract vocabulary across subjects

One reason these words deserve attention is that they travel. Factor can appear in Science, Geography, History and English. Evidence changes slightly by discipline but retains a broad idea of support. Interpret can describe a poem, a graph or an event. Criteria can guide a design decision, a source evaluation or an essay judgement.

This creates a powerful opportunity: do not teach such words as belonging only to English. Ask how the same conceptual tool behaves elsewhere.

A concept map for one word

Choose influence and place it in the centre. Around it, build:

  • definition: an effect on how something develops, behaves or changes;
  • verb: influence;
  • related noun: influence;
  • related adjective: influential;
  • near words: affect, shape, persuade;
  • contrast: influence is not necessarily control;
  • domains: peers, media, environment, temperature, culture;
  • question: what influenced the outcome?

This gives the abstract word several concrete handles.

The “same structure, new surface” exercise

Teach a concept in one setting, then deliberately change the surface details.

Concept: consequence

  • A student stays up late and struggles to concentrate.
  • A city removes vegetation and experiences higher local temperatures.
  • A character lies and later loses a friend’s trust.

Do not always ask for the meaning of the word. Describe the conceptual structure and ask students to retrieve the label.

  • “A result that follows from an earlier action.” → consequence
  • “Standards used to judge something.” → criteria
  • “Information surrounding an event that helps us interpret it.” → context
  • “A tendency that favours one side.” → bias
  • “To support a judgement with reasons or evidence.” → justify

This reversibility is important because students must often move from thought to word in actual writing.

  1. Choose three abstract words from the master list.
  2. Write each definition in simple language.
  3. Draw or describe one situation that makes the relationship visible.
  4. Write one non-example.
  5. Compare the word with a nearby concept.
  6. Use it in a second school subject.
  7. Use it in an everyday situation.
  8. Hide the word and retrieve it from the relationship the next day.

The routine is not complicated. Its strength comes from variation.

For parents: ask for a situation, not another definition

If a child says “criteria means standards for judging,” follow with: “Give me three situations where people need criteria.” If the child knows bias, ask: “Can two honest people still have different biases?” If the child knows context, remove a sentence from a story and ask what information would be needed to interpret it safely.

These conversations reveal whether the concept can move.

For teachers: teach the invisible relation

When abstract vocabulary fails, repeating the definition more loudly rarely solves the problem. Ask what relationship the learner has not yet seen. Does criteria fail because the student does not understand judgement against standards? Does bias fail because the learner thinks it simply means “wrong”? Does ambiguous fail because multiple interpretation has never been made explicit?

Diagnose the missing structure, then rebuild the word around it.

A student can experience unfair treatment without knowing bias. A student can see something happen after a decision without knowing consequence. A student can notice that an explanation does not fit the evidence without knowing contradict.

But once the concepts become available, the learner can compare situations more efficiently. The word provides a handle. It allows the mind to hold, inspect and communicate a pattern that might otherwise remain blurry.

This is why abstract vocabulary matters so much in Secondary 1. The curriculum is not only introducing harder language. It is asking students to work with increasingly complex relationships between ideas.

Deep Practice: Building Abstract Concepts That Can Travel

Abstract vocabulary becomes truly useful when the student can recognise the same underlying relationship despite dramatic changes in surface detail. This is where a concept stops being tied to one classroom example and begins functioning as a general thinking tool.

The invariant-structure test

Take criteria. A scholarship panel uses criteria. So does a family choosing a phone, a scientist deciding whether evidence is reliable and a student judging which source is useful. The visible activities differ, but the invariant structure remains: a judgement is being made according to standards.

Do the same with bias. One context may involve news coverage, another a survey, another a teacher’s expectation, another an algorithm. The surface changes. The underlying pattern—systematic unequal weighting or tendency—remains recognisable.

Build concepts through contrast pairs

  • assumption vs inference: accepting without establishing versus deriving from evidence;
  • intention vs consequence: hoped-for result versus what actually follows;
  • criteria vs preference: standards for judgement versus personal liking;
  • bias vs perspective: unequal weighting versus a viewpoint from which something is seen;
  • explicit vs implied: directly stated versus suggested without direct statement.

Contrast is powerful because it gives the concept an edge. Students learn not only what a word includes but what it excludes.

Move between concrete and abstract deliberately

Ask students to translate in both directions. Concrete to abstract: “The committee used the same three standards for every candidate” → consistent criteria. Abstract to concrete: “The decision was arbitrary” → invent a situation where a choice is made without a defensible rule. This two-way translation builds far deeper ownership than a definition copied once.

Concept chaining

Abstract words rarely operate alone. A useful reasoning chain might be:

context → evidence → interpretation → assumption → conclusion → justification → consequence

Give students a short case and ask them to walk through the chain. What is the context? What evidence exists? What interpretation is plausible? Which assumption is being made? What conclusion follows? How can it be justified? What consequence might result? Vocabulary now organises reasoning rather than decorating it.
