How Geography Works | Regions — How Humans Divide a Continuous World Into Useful, Changing Areas

The Earth has no dotted lines painted across most of its surface. Humans add them because complexity becomes easier to think about when we divide it.

We talk about Southeast Asia, the tropics, the CBD, a school catchment, a river basin, a shopping district, a language region, a commuter belt and a climate zone as if each were simply sitting there waiting to be named. But each region exists because someone selected a criterion, drew a boundary and decided what counted as inside or outside.

A region is not merely an area. It is an argument about which similarities matter.

Regions help geographers organise Earth’s complexity. They can be defined by shared characteristics, by connections to a node, by perception or by administrative purpose. Their boundaries may be sharp or fuzzy. They can overlap, nest inside larger regions, change through time and serve different analytical jobs.

1. The World Is Continuous; Regions Are Selective

Rainfall does not usually stop at a political border. Languages overlap. Cities blend into suburbs and commuter towns. Ecosystems transition gradually. Yet analysis requires categories. Regions simplify continuous variation by selecting features that make some areas meaningfully similar.

The simplification is useful so long as we remember that the boundary belongs to the analytical purpose, not necessarily to nature itself.

2. Formal Regions: Similarity Creates the Group

A formal region is defined by one or more shared characteristics. A climate region may use temperature and precipitation. A political region may use legal jurisdiction. A linguistic region may use the distribution of a language. An agricultural region may be defined by dominant land use.

The crucial question is always: similar in what way? Two places can belong to the same climate region and completely different political or cultural regions.

3. Functional Regions: Connections Create the Group

A functional region is organised around a node and the flows connected to it. A metropolitan labour market may be defined by commuting. A newspaper circulation area by readership. A port hinterland by freight connections. A hospital service area by patient movement.

The edge is not where the landscape suddenly changes. It is where the strength of the functional relationship weakens.

4. Perceptual Regions: People Carry Boundaries in Their Heads

Some regions exist partly through shared perception: “the heartland,” “downtown,” “the north,” “the Mediterranean world.” Different people may draw these boundaries differently because experience, identity and cultural knowledge shape the mental map.

Perceptual regions are not useless because they are fuzzy. They matter because perceptions influence behaviour, reputation, investment, tourism and belonging.

5. Administrative Regions: Governance Needs Lines

Governments need boundaries for elections, schools, policing, land administration, statistics and service delivery. Administrative regions therefore often have crisp borders.

But an administrative boundary is not automatically the correct boundary for every geographical question. A drainage basin may cross municipalities. A labour market may cross national borders. Air pollution can cross both.

6. One Place Belongs to Many Regions at Once

Singapore can simultaneously be described as a sovereign state, an island, part of Southeast Asia, part of the tropics, part of several global trade and aviation networks and part of a wider maritime region. None of these classifications cancels the others.

This is a foundational geographic habit: regional membership depends on the criterion.

7. Regions Can Nest

A neighbourhood sits inside a planning area, a city, a country and a world region. A stream sits inside a sub-catchment, river basin and larger hydrological system. Nested regions let geographers move between levels without losing structure.

But nesting works only if the boundaries are appropriate. Ecological and political regions may overlap without nesting neatly.

8. Regions Can Overlap

A coastal tourism region may overlap a fishing region, a conservation zone and a metropolitan commuter area. Overlap is not a defect. It reflects the fact that the same land can participate in several systems.

The mistake is to assume one regional division must be the “real” one.

9. Boundaries Can Be Fuzzy

Where exactly does a city end? Legally, the answer may be clear. Functionally, commuting, housing markets and transport can extend far beyond the municipal line. Where does a language region end? Bilingual areas may form broad transition zones.

Geography therefore distinguishes crisp administrative boundaries from gradient or probabilistic boundaries in the real world.

10. Regions Change Through Time

Industrial regions decline or reinvent themselves. Metropolitan areas expand. Agricultural zones shift with climate, irrigation and markets. Political borders change. New transport links enlarge commuter regions.

A regional map is therefore a historical snapshot as well as a spatial classification.

11. The Criterion Can Create the Pattern You Think You Found

If you classify regions by income, you will see an income pattern. If you classify by language, you will see a language pattern. This sounds obvious, yet it is easy to forget when a coloured map looks authoritative.

Always ask whether the map discovered a pattern or displayed the classification rule used to build the regions in the first place.

12. Regional Labels Can Hide Internal Diversity

Calling an area “the tropics” does not make every tropical place environmentally identical. Calling an area “Southeast Asia” does not erase enormous variation in language, economy, religion, history, terrain and political systems.

Regions help compress complexity, but compression always loses detail.

13. Regional Labels Can Become Stereotypes

A useful classification becomes dangerous when it hardens into assumptions about every person or place inside it. “Urban,” “rural,” “developed,” “Global South,” “heartland” and similar terms can conceal internal diversity and history.

Geographic literacy means using regional categories while remaining suspicious of what they flatten.

14. Primary Geography: Make Regions From the Classroom

Ask children to divide a classroom in different ways: quiet versus noisy, sunny versus shaded, learning spaces versus movement spaces. The same room produces several regions depending on the criterion.

That small exercise teaches the deep idea: boundaries are made for a purpose.

15. Secondary Geography: Compare Regional Definitions

Students can compare an administrative city boundary with a built-up urban area and a commuting region. Why do they differ? Which one is most useful for housing? Which for transport? Which for elections?

The answer depends on the problem, which is exactly the point.

16. Advanced Geography: Regionalisation Is a Method

At advanced levels, regionalisation can be data-driven. Analysts may group areas using combinations of demographic, economic, environmental or accessibility variables. Different clustering methods can generate different regional structures from the same data.

This makes regional boundaries testable rather than sacred. Change the variables, thresholds or method and the regional map may change.

17. A Singapore Example: “The Heartlands”

“The heartlands” can function as a perceptual, social and planning idea rather than one single legally bounded region. Different people may associate it with HDB towns, neighbourhood centres, everyday residential life or places outside the downtown core.

The term is useful because it captures lived geography. It is also fuzzy because lived regions rarely obey one precise line.

18. A Physical Example: A River Basin

A drainage basin is a powerful region because topography links all points through water flow toward an outlet. Political borders may cut across it, but the hydrological region remains connected.

This is why upstream decisions can create downstream consequences across jurisdictions.

19. A Functional Example: The Commuter Region

If many residents of surrounding towns travel daily into one employment centre, those places form a functional labour-market region even when they fall under separate local governments.

Transport planning based only on political boundaries can therefore miss the geography of actual movement.

20. Hostile Test: “This Region Has Always Existed”

Ask who named it, which criterion defines it, whether earlier maps used the same boundary, and which groups accept or reject the label. Some regions have deep physical coherence; others are recent administrative inventions; many are mixtures of both.

Before treating a region as a fact, ask how the region was made.

21. Where Regional Reasoning Breaks

  • Naturalisation: treating every region as if nature drew its border.
  • One-region fallacy: assuming a place belongs to only one meaningful region.
  • Border worship: using political lines for processes that ignore them.
  • Stereotype compression: treating all places or people inside a region as alike.
  • Static map error: assuming regional boundaries never change.
  • Criterion blindness: forgetting which variable created the classification.
  • Fuzzy-to-crisp error: forcing gradual transitions into unjustified hard boundaries.

  2. Is it formal, functional, perceptual or administrative?
  3. Who drew or named the boundary?
  4. Is the boundary sharp or fuzzy?
  5. What internal diversity does the label hide?
  6. What flows cross the boundary?
  7. Which other regions overlap here?
  8. Has the region changed through time?
  9. Would another boundary answer the question better?
  10. What becomes invisible because we used this regional frame?
