How Geography Works | Site and Situation — Why Where a Place Sits Changes What It Can Become

Two places can have similar land, similar climate and similar populations—and still develop very differently because one sits in a far more advantageous position.

Geographers distinguish between site and situation. Site is what the place itself is like: terrain, elevation, soil, water, harbour conditions, drainage and other local characteristics. Situation is where the place sits relative to other places, routes, markets, resources, borders and networks.

Site asks, “What is here?” Situation asks, “What is this connected to?”

1. Site Is the Ground Beneath the Place

Site includes topography, soils, water supply, elevation, geology, drainage, vegetation and coastal form. Early settlements often depended heavily on these local physical conditions because engineering could not yet compensate easily for poor terrain or water access.

2. Situation Is Relative Position

A settlement may sit at a river crossing, beside a mountain pass, on a trade route, near fertile hinterland, close to a political border or at the meeting point of transport systems. These relationships can matter more than the absolute coordinates.

3. Good Site, Weak Situation

A sheltered harbour with abundant water may still remain minor if it is distant from trade routes, markets and productive hinterlands. Physical advantage does not guarantee economic centrality.

4. Weak Site, Strong Situation

Engineering can sometimes overcome difficult local conditions when situation is valuable enough. Cities reclaim land, tunnel through mountains, bridge rivers and import water because their relative position offers advantages worth defending.

5. Situation Changes Faster Than Site

A mountain does not move quickly, but a railway can shift regional accessibility in a decade. A canal can redirect shipping. A new border can turn a central place into a peripheral one. An airport can connect a once-remote city to a global network.

6. Technology Rewrites Site Constraints

Air-conditioning changes climatic constraints. Reservoirs and desalination change water constraints. Piling and reclamation change building possibilities. Refrigeration changes food geography. Technology does not remove geography; it changes which geographical constraints bind hardest.

7. Situation Can Create Strategic Value

Places near chokepoints, crossroads, straits, border crossings or network hubs can gain strategic importance because flows pass through them. Their value comes partly from what lies elsewhere.

8. Situation Can Become a Liability

Being close to a volatile border, exposed coastline, conflict corridor or congested route can increase risk. Relative position creates vulnerability as well as opportunity.

9. A City’s Situation Can Shift Without Moving

When global trade routes change, when neighbouring economies grow, or when new infrastructure opens, the relative importance of a city can rise or fall even though its coordinates remain fixed.

Children can compare settlements near rivers, roads, coasts and hills. The simple question “Why there?” begins the distinction between local conditions and relative position.

11. Secondary Geography: Multiple Causes

A stronger geographical explanation avoids saying a city grew “because of the river” or “because of the port.” It asks how site, transport, markets, institutions, technology and historical timing reinforced one another.

12. Advanced Geography: Path Dependence

Once a place gains infrastructure, firms, labour and reputation, those investments can reinforce the original locational advantage. Situation therefore interacts with history: an early advantage can become self-reinforcing.

Singapore’s location near major maritime routes gives it a situation that connects local land to much larger flows of shipping, trade and movement. That advantage does not operate automatically: port infrastructure, governance, logistics, labour and regional relationships make the situation usable.

A port needs workable coastal conditions, but also routes inland and outward. A harbour without cargo flows is only potential. Situation converts physical possibility into network value.

15. Mountain Pass Example

A narrow pass can become disproportionately important because it concentrates movement through difficult terrain. The site may be harsh while the situation is strategically valuable.

16. Airport Example

An airport’s site requires suitable land and safety conditions. Its situation depends on population, regional markets, air routes, connecting traffic and ground transport. Successful hubs combine both.
