How Geography Works | Spatial Interaction — Why Places Pull, Push, Exchange and Depend on One Another

Places do not simply exist beside one another. They pull, push, exchange, compete, cooperate and depend on one another.

Every morning, people move toward schools and jobs. Containers move between ports. Money moves between financial centres. Water moves downhill. Tourists move toward attractions. Information moves across digital networks. Pollution can move downwind. The world is full of flows.

Geographers use spatial interaction to study why these flows happen, how strong they are, what increases or weakens them, and how distance and networks shape the relationship between places.

Spatial interaction is what turns separate places into a system.

1. Interaction Requires Something to Move

People, goods, capital, information, organisms, water, energy and pollutants can all create spatial interaction. What moves determines which routes, barriers and speeds matter.

2. Attraction Matters

Places attract flows because they contain jobs, schools, markets, services, relatives, amenities, resources or opportunities. Larger or more specialised places may attract flows from farther away.

3. Push Matters Too

Movement can begin because an origin becomes less desirable: unemployment, hazard, conflict, high prices, drought or congestion can push people or activities elsewhere.

4. Distance Usually Creates Friction

All else equal, interaction often declines as distance, travel time or cost increases. This is sometimes described as distance decay. But transport and communications can weaken that effect dramatically.

5. Networks Can Defeat Straight-Line Distance

Two cities far apart may interact intensely if connected by frequent flights, trade or digital links. Two nearby villages may interact weakly if a mountain, river or border separates them.

6. Intervening Opportunities Matter

A traveller heading toward a distant job centre may stop searching when a suitable job appears closer to home. A shopper may choose a nearer mall rather than a larger one farther away. Spatial interaction depends not only on origin and destination but on alternatives encountered between them.

7. Barriers Can Be Physical or Human

Mountains, oceans and rivers can impede movement, but so can visas, tariffs, tolls, language, regulations and fear. Geography studies both because both alter flows.

8. Flows Can Be Unequal

Goods may move one way while money moves another. Migrants may send remittances back to their place of origin. Water may flow downstream while political decisions about that water are made upstream. Interaction often contains asymmetry.

9. Flows Create Dependence

A city dependent on imported food, energy or labour becomes linked to distant places. Strong connectivity creates opportunity and exposure at the same time.

10. Flows Can Reshape the Places They Connect

Tourism can change housing markets. Migration can change neighbourhood demographics. Trade can change land use. Commuting can reshape transport investment. Interaction is not a neutral bridge between fixed places; it changes both ends.

11. Primary Geography: Where Do Things Come From?

Ask a child where their breakfast came from. The plate becomes a map of farms, factories, warehouses, roads and shops. Spatial interaction becomes visible through an everyday object.

Students can compare flows to shopping centres, schools or employment districts and ask how attraction, accessibility and competing destinations shape movement.

13. Advanced Geography: Interaction Models

Gravity-style spatial models estimate interaction using the size or attractiveness of places and the friction of distance between them. They can be useful for transport, retail and migration analysis, but they remain models and depend on how attraction and impedance are measured.

Every workday, flows connect residential areas with employment centres through MRT lines, buses, roads and walking networks. Travel patterns reveal where jobs are concentrated, where people live and how the transport system mediates between them.

A container arriving in Singapore is part of a chain extending through producers, ports, shipping schedules, customs, warehouses and onward destinations. The port’s importance comes from the intensity and reliability of these interactions.

16. Migration Example

Migration can be influenced by jobs, family networks, safety, education, policy and cost. Existing migrant communities can reduce the friction of future movement by providing information and support.

17. Disease Example

Human mobility can connect outbreaks across space. Yet movement patterns, border controls, immunity, behaviour and public health systems all mediate the spread. A route map is necessary but not sufficient for epidemiological explanation.

18. Digital Interaction Is Still Geographic

Video calls and cloud services compress practical distance, but data centres, cables, latency, electricity and regulation remain spatially organised. Digital interaction changes geography; it does not abolish it.

19. Hostile Test: “Distance No Longer Matters”

Distance may matter less for some information flows, but it still matters differently for people, freight, energy, time zones, logistics, trust and infrastructure. The correct question is not whether distance matters, but how much friction remains for this particular flow?

  • Flow blindness: treating places as isolated containers.
  • Distance-only thinking: ignoring attraction and network quality.
  • Symmetry assumption: assuming flows are equal in both directions.
  • Barrier blindness: ignoring policy and social friction.
  • Static-place error: forgetting flows reshape origin and destination.
  • Digital placelessness: assuming information movement has no physical geography.
