Ownership Is a Routing Function
When something enters a system, it needs a route.
A date needs to enter a calendar.
A repair needs someone to arrange it.

A bill needs someone to verify and pay it.
A family decision needs someone to close the loop after discussion.
Without ownership, work bounces.
notice → mention → assume → remind → ask → wait → mention again.
The object has moved socially without moving operationally.
Clear ownership changes the route:

One Owner Does Not Mean One Worker

If “ownership” means “the owner personally performs every task,” ownership becomes overload.
A better model separates:
- Owner: the person accountable for seeing the matter reach an appropriate state.
- Doer: the person performing a specific action.
- Expert: the person whose judgement should govern a specialised decision.

- Receiver: the person who needs the result.

“We need to help with Mathematics” is vague.
“The student will attempt ten diagnostic questions Saturday morning; the tutor will review the error pattern” is routable.
When several people are involved, clarity often comes from assigning the next move rather than trying to assign the entire universe.

Node 3: Own the Decision
Some tasks are simple until a decision appears.
Which repair option?
Which revision priority?
Which supplier?
Which deadline?
If decision authority is unclear, work can stop despite abundant labour.
A simple system distinguishes contribution from authority.
Many people can advise.
One person, pair or formally defined group should know who has the right to close the decision.
This does not mean hierarchy always wins. In high-reliability settings, expertise may need to outrank status when conditions become specialised or dangerous. The correct decision owner is sometimes the person closest to the relevant evidence.
Node 4: Own the Follow-Up
Delegated work creates a new failure mode.
The task leaves your hands and disappears from everybody’s view.
“I asked them” is not the same as “the outcome is safe.”
Ownership includes knowing when delegated or waiting work must be checked.

The owner does not hover.
The owner preserves the return path.

A record can have a location and still have no steward.
The family calendar exists, but nobody updates it.

Node 6: Own the Exception
Routine ownership is easy.
Exceptions expose the real system.
The usual parent is overseas.
The usual teacher is absent.

Students need ownership gradually returned to them.
A Primary 1 child may need adults to own much of the school logistics.
An older student should increasingly own:
- capturing homework;
- bringing materials;
- checking deadlines;
- attempting work before asking for rescue;
- bringing specific questions to teachers or tutors;
- tracking repeated errors;
- preparing for known assessments.
The transfer should be calibrated to capability.
If ownership is transferred too early, the child may repeatedly fail for reasons unrelated to the intended learning.
If it is transferred too late, adults become permanent infrastructure for tasks the child should learn to carry.
Ownership is therefore a teaching target.
Ownership for Families
Families often suffer from invisible default ownership.
The person who notices becomes the person who owns everything.
This is not a sustainable rule.
Instead, name ownership for recurring domains:
- shared calendar stewardship;
- school forms;
- household maintenance;
- subscriptions;
- travel documents;
- meal planning;
- particular child responsibilities as age allows.
Ownership can rotate.
It can be renegotiated.

Two teams build the same analysis because both believe they own it.

- Who owns the outcome?
- Who performs the next action?
- Who has decision authority?
- Whose expertise governs specialised questions?
- Who needs to be informed?
- Who follows up if the expected return does not arrive?
Do not create an elaborate responsibility matrix for trivial work.
Use enough structure to remove ambiguity and no more.
