Imageability and Concreteness in English Vocabulary: Why “Apple” Is Easy to Picture but “Justice” Is Not

Which word is easier to picture? > apple or: > justice? Most people can form a fairly immediate image of: > an apple. Colour. Shape. Surface. Maybe even taste, smell and weight. Now try: > justice. What exactly appears? A courtroom? A judge? Balanced scales? A protest? A fair decision? The concept is meaningful. But the image is less direct. This distinction leads to two important vocabulary variables: > **concreteness** and: > **imageability**. They are strongly related. They are not identical. **Concreteness** asks roughly: > How much does the word refer to something grounded in sensory or physical experience? **Imageability** asks: > How easily does the word evoke a mental image or sensory representation? A word can score high on both. But the difference matters because vocabulary learning is not simply: > concrete words easy > abstract words hard. Learners build meaning through several routes: – perception; – action; – language; – emotion; – social experience; – conceptual relations. ## Quick answer: what is concreteness? A concrete word refers to something that can be experienced relatively directly through the senses. Examples: > table > dog > rain > bread. An abstract word refers more strongly to relations, states, institutions, ideas or values. Examples: > justice > possibility > responsibility > democracy. Concreteness is usually measured through human ratings. A major English norming study by Marc Brysbaert, Amy Beth Warriner and Victor Kuperman collected concreteness ratings for roughly: > 40,000 English words and expressions. Participants rated how strongly meanings were grounded in sensory experience. ## What is imageability? Imageability is usually measured by asking: > How easily does this word evoke a mental image? High-imageability: > mountain > hammer > kitten. Low-imageability: > truth > reason > probability. Imageability has traditionally been associated especially with visual imagery. But modern research warns that language meaning is not only visual. A concept may be grounded in sound, movement, touch or bodily experience. So: > imageability is useful. It is not the whole of semantic embodiment. ## Concreteness and imageability overlap strongly A concrete object such as: > bicycle is both physically experienceable and easy to imagine. So the two ratings correlate strongly. This is why older research sometimes treated them almost interchangeably. But they ask different questions. Consider: > thunder. Concrete sensory event. Highly imageable in an auditory sense, even if the word: > image sounds visual. Now: > freedom. Abstract. Yet a person may produce vivid images: – open gate; – released prisoner; – national celebration. High imagery can be created by association without making the concept itself fully concrete. ## The concreteness effect Across many psycholinguistic tasks, concrete words often receive processing advantages over abstract words. This pattern is called: > the concreteness effect. Depending on task, concrete words can be remembered better, recognised faster or processed more accurately. Why? One classic explanation is **dual coding**. Concrete words can be represented through: 1. verbal information; 2. imagery or sensory information. Abstract words depend more strongly on verbal or relational representation. Modern theories are more complex, but the educational intuition remains useful: > a word with several meaningful access routes can be easier to retrieve. ## Perceptual strength may explain more than imageability alone A major 2012 study compared concreteness, imageability and perceptual strength across vision, sound, touch, taste and smell. The researchers found that **perceptual strength** predicted lexical processing better than concreteness or imageability in their analyses. That matters. When a teacher says: > “make a mental picture,” the learner may benefit. But some words are better grounded through sound, movement or bodily action. Vocabulary learning should be multisensory where useful. ## Current research continues refining the concreteness effect A 2025 *Cognition* study revisited the concreteness effect. It found systematic relationships between phonological or phonetic form and concreteness ratings. The researchers reported that form typicality contributed to lexical-processing performance even after controlling for concreteness itself. This complicates a simple story: > concrete meanings are faster because of semantic representation alone. Word form and meaning can be statistically related. The broader lesson is excellent: > one behavioural effect can have several contributing mechanisms. ## “Apple” is easy because the world supplies features A child learning: > apple can connect: – round-ish shape; – red or green colour; – taste; – smell; – bite; – tree; – snack. The object supplies repeated multimodal evidence. Now learn: > obligation. What do you point to? There is no single object. The learner needs a social scenario, rule, responsibility and consequence. The abstract word requires a relational model. That is not inferior learning. It is a different semantic architecture. ## Abstract vocabulary depends heavily on language Words such as: > democracy > probability > inference are partly learned through: > other words. A learner builds the concept through definitions, examples, contrasts, explanations and subject systems. This creates a feedback loop: > vocabulary helps learn abstract vocabulary. A child with weak language exposure can therefore face increasing difficulty as school becomes more conceptually abstract. ## Emotion can ground abstract words Some abstract concepts are not sensory but are strongly emotional. Examples: > hope > fear > shame > pride. These words may be easier to acquire than equally abstract technical concepts because learners experience: > the emotional state. Research on abstract vocabulary development increasingly emphasises emotion, social interaction and language. Abstract does not mean: > disconnected from experience. The experience may simply be: > internal or relational. ## “Easy to picture” does not mean “easy to understand” Consider: > cell. A picture of a cell may be easy to imagine. Does that mean a student understands membrane transport, organelles or cellular respiration? No. Imageability supports: > access. Understanding requires: > mechanism. A colourful diagram can create familiarity without explanatory depth. This is an important educational safeguard. ## “Hard to picture” does not mean “impossible to learn” Students learn: > justice > sovereignty > probability > causation. How? By building structured relations. For: > causation, contrast: > correlation. For: > sovereignty, connect state, authority, territory and legal power. Abstract vocabulary becomes usable when its relational network is explicit. ## Science often moves from concrete to abstract Primary Science: > water evaporates. Concrete observations: – puddle disappears; – wet clothes dry. Secondary or JC Science introduces more abstract representations: – particle motion; – energy transfer; – equilibrium. The same physical world becomes increasingly theoretical. Vocabulary follows that progression. A student needs both: > imageable anchor > abstract model. ## Mathematics is often low-imageability but highly precise Try to picture: > prime factorisation. You can imagine written numbers. But the concept is not one physical object. Mathematics often gains clarity from symbols, diagrams and formal relations. That is a reminder: > mental imagery is one representational tool. Not the definition of understanding. A learner can have strong mathematical meaning with limited sensory concreteness. ## Humanities combine concrete events with abstract categories History passage: > Soldiers crossed the bridge. Highly imageable. Now: > The transition altered the legitimacy of the state. Much more abstract. Yet historical explanation depends on both. A strong student moves between: > concrete event and: > systemic abstraction. This is one reason vocabulary determines analytical depth. ## Singapore classroom example A Secondary student knows: > resilience as: > “being strong.” That is too vague. Make it more concrete: > A material bends and returns to shape. Then broaden: > A community suffers disruption and recovers. Then abstract: > resilience = capacity to withstand or recover from disturbance. The concrete examples are scaffolds. The final concept is relational. ## Imageability can support memory strategies Target: > precarious. Definition: > unstable; likely to become dangerous or fail. Create an image: > a cup balanced on the edge of a table. Now: > precarious situation. The visual scene gives a memory anchor. But the word is not restricted to physically balancing objects. The learner must transfer from image to abstract use. That is how imagery should work: > scaffold, then generalise. ## Beware of literal-image traps Target: > grasp an idea. A student imagines: > hand grabbing object. That metaphor helps initially. But: > grasp in the phrase means: > understand. The image must not overwrite the conventional meaning. Imageability can support metaphor awareness without turning every figurative expression into literal action. ## Word learning and young children Research on children’s expressive vocabulary has repeatedly found that highly imageable words are especially common earlier in development. As vocabulary grows, learners increasingly acquire less imageable forms. This makes developmental sense. Early vocabulary is heavily grounded in people, objects and actions. School progressively expands into abstractions, systems and disciplines. Vocabulary learning becomes more language-mediated over time. ## Imageability and age of acquisition Highly concrete and imageable words are often learned earlier. So imageability, concreteness, frequency and age of acquisition are correlated. Good research controls them separately. Good teaching also separates them conceptually. A word can be difficult because it is rare, abstract, late-acquired or morphologically complex. Those are different mechanisms. ## Reading comprehension Sentence: > The treaty undermined the legitimacy of the regime. A student may know: > treaty > regime but not: > legitimacy. Because legitimacy is abstract, the learner cannot simply visualise the missing meaning. The teacher can build: > legitimacy = accepted right to rule. Then examples: > lawful election > public acceptance > inherited monarchy > contested authority. The abstract word becomes a system. ## Writing Students often replace abstract vocabulary with vague concrete-sounding words: > this thing caused a lot of problems. The issue is not: > “use longer words.” It is: > name the relationship. Possible: > policy > incentive > inequality > consequence > constraint. Abstract vocabulary allows writers to compress complex structures. But only when the word is genuinely understood. ## A quiet literary lens A controlled writer often alternates: > concrete detail with: > abstract interpretation. For example: > The receipt lay folded beside the cup. Concrete. Then: > It was the first evidence that trust had failed. Abstract. The power comes from connection. The object gives the abstraction a material anchor. A high-level literary lesson is: > let ideas grow from observed details. Not: > replace abstract writing with imagery everywhere. ## Parents: ask two different questions For a new word: ### Can you picture it? Tests: > imageability. ### Can you explain what relationships make it true? Tests: > conceptual understanding. A child may pass one and fail the other. That distinction tells you how to help. ## Teachers: move from representation to transfer For abstract word: > inequality. ### Example 1 Two students receive different resources. ### Representation Show unequal distribution. ### Definition > unequal access, treatment or outcomes. ### Transfer Income inequality. Educational inequality. Health inequality. Now the learner is no longer tied to one picture. School leadership. Corporate management.
