Between 1407 and 1419, the same young physician is documented beside Michele Savonarola, Galeazzo Santasofia, Giacomo della Torre da Forlì, Biagio Pelacani, Antonio Cermisone, Bartolomeo da Montagnana and Bartolomeo Santasofia.
Dottori is not a Voynich candidate. He is a network probe: one person whose education exposes how densely connected Padua’s medicine, philosophy and teaching system was during the early Voynich window.

Instead of asking whether one extraordinary scholar could combine several disciplines, we can ask what an ordinary high-level student actually encountered during formal training.
1407: Dottori and Savonarola Appear Together
Treccani records a small but revealing event on 12 January 1407.
Dottori and Michele Savonarola acted as witnesses when Galeazzo Santasofia purchased a house in the contrada of San Matteo.
This is not evidence of a secret intellectual society.
It is better than that.
It is mundane evidence that these people were physically embedded in one local social and professional environment.

1409: The Arts Degree Exposes the Older Generation
Dottori received the arts degree on 13 May 1409.
His promoters included three major teachers:
- Galeazzo Santasofia;

This matters because the degree ceremony freezes one educational generation in a single event.
Dottori’s training sits at the intersection of medicine, Aristotelian natural philosophy, mathematical physics and the older Paduan medical establishment.
The Arts Faculty Is Not a Detour From Medicine
Medieval medical education was not isolated from the arts curriculum.
Natural philosophy, logic and related disciplines formed part of the intellectual infrastructure of medical learning.
Dottori’s path therefore illustrates the bridge already visible elsewhere in Padua:

This is one reason the Voynich Manuscript should not be forced prematurely into a modern single-subject category.
1412–1419: Dottori Continues Through the University System
Treccani records Dottori accumulating further academic titles in arts between 1412 and 1419.
This is important because it shows continuity rather than one ceremonial degree.
He remains inside the Paduan teaching machine across the decade after the Venetian takeover.
That is exactly the institutional continuity the Padua hypothesis has been emphasising.
1419: The Medical Degree Exposes the New Generation
Dottori received the doctorate in medicine on 31 July 1419.
The promoters now include a different cluster:
- Antonio Cermisone;
- Bartolomeo da Montagnana;
- Bartolomeo Santasofia;
- Michele Savonarola;
- Niccolò da Brugine.
Dottori therefore gives us a twelve-year bridge between two overlapping generations of Paduan medicine.
The people change.
The institution persists.
This Is a Better Test of 1405 Than Political Storytelling
Padua fell to Venice in 1405.
If the medical system had collapsed, we would expect broken educational continuity.
Dottori’s path shows the opposite.
He is embedded in a functioning academic network in 1407, graduates in 1409 and completes medicine in 1419 under a new but continuous set of masters.

Dottori Becomes a Cermisone Satellite
Dottori’s later teaching career unfolded closely around Antonio Cermisone.
In 1424 he was appointed Cermisone’s substitute in ordinary theoretical medicine, reading when the famous physician was away from Padua on professional business.
This shows how practical medicine and university teaching interacted.
The professor leaves to treat patients.
The institutional teaching slot continues through a trusted colleague.
Books Move Inside the Network Too
Dottori’s 1428 testament reveals a small but important book-history detail.
He left some books to Cermisone and Sigismondo Polcastro and recalled that he had received books on loan from Cermisone.
This means the same professional network that shares teaching roles also circulates books.

That is a real micro-provenance system.
The Plague Consilium Shows Knowledge Compression
Dottori’s only surviving work identified by Treccani is a Consilium contra epidimialem pestem.
A later note by Hartmann Schedel says the text records remedies Dottori used to save himself and his wife from plague.
The remedies drew on Cermisone’s plague consilia and were also shared in Savonarola’s later works.
This is an unusually clean knowledge-transformation chain:
Cermisone advice → Dottori personal application → Dottori written consilium → Savonarola parallel use → Schedel northern manuscript preservation.
The Same Network Reappears Decades Later in Germany
Schedel copied the manuscript containing Dottori’s plague consilium between 1464 and 1472.
This means the student network of 1407–1419 later leaves traces in a German physician-humanist’s manuscript world.
Again, no Voynich route is established.
But the transmission mechanism is concrete.
Why Dottori Is a Better Network Control Than a Famous Polymath
Fontana shows one extraordinary technical career.
Dottori shows something more ordinary and therefore more representative.
One student can move through:
- natural philosophy;
- medical theory;
- practical medicine;
- teacher substitution;

- plague practice;
- later northern transmission.
That density tells us what the institutional environment itself can generate.
What Dottori Can Legitimately Support
- Paduan medicine remained institutionally connected after 1405.
- Dottori’s education links several major teachers across two generations.
- Books circulated through personal loan and testamentary transfer inside the medical network.
- Case-based and plague-related medical knowledge moved between Cermisone, Dottori, Savonarola and later Schedel.
- The Paduan medical network was a real graph of people, books and practices rather than a list of famous names.
What It Cannot Support
- that Dottori wrote, owned or saw Voynich;
- that every teacher named at a doctorate taught every subject to the candidate;
- that book loans in this circle include Beinecke MS 408;
- that plague medicine explains Voynich imagery;
- that network density equals provenance.
The Dottori Network Test
- Map every dated educational edge from 1407 to 1419.
- Separate promoter, teacher, colleague, witness and borrower relations.
- Track surviving manuscripts for each person.
- Identify books explicitly loaned or inherited.
- Follow later copies into German and Central-European collections.
- Require object-level evidence before connecting any route to Voynich.

Dottori makes the Padua hypothesis less dependent on exceptional personalities.
One student’s documented path from 1407 to 1419 reveals a connected medical institution capable of carrying people, books and practical knowledge across generations. If Voynich belongs to Padua, it should eventually intersect this kind of network at the object level.
