A date range can be either a fence or a doorway.
For the Voynich Manuscript, 1404–1438 is usually treated as the famous radiocarbon result: a way to say that the parchment belongs to the first decades of the fifteenth century.
But a historical date range becomes far more useful when we ask what was actually happening inside it.
Who was teaching? Who was studying? Which books existed? Which courts were commissioning them? Which cities were at war? Which institutions survived political collapse? Which physicians were moving between theory, practice, pharmacy and patients? Which technical traditions were still alive?
The 1404–1438 window is not evidence that the Voynich Manuscript came from Padua. It is the chronological test chamber in which a Padua hypothesis must either acquire historical structure or dissolve into coincidence.

What Radiocarbon Dating Gives Us — and What It Does Not
The first discipline is simple: do not ask radiocarbon dating to answer a question it did not measure.
The tests were performed on parchment samples. The reported combined range is usually given as 1404–1438 with approximately 95 per cent probability.
That means the animals from which the sampled parchment was made belong statistically to that interval.
It does not by itself tell us:
- the exact year the manuscript was written;
- where the writing happened;
- who wrote it;
- whether all drawings and paint were applied at the same moment;
- whether the codex was assembled in its present order at first production;
- whether its underlying knowledge was contemporary or copied from older sources.
So 1404–1438 is not a birthday certificate.
It is a chronological constraint.
Before 1404: The Paduan Machine Was Already Running
If we start history in 1404, we miss the machinery that made 1404 meaningful.
Padua’s university had been active for generations. Its medical and philosophical culture had already absorbed traditions reaching through Latin scholasticism into Greek and Arabic learning. Pietro d’Abano’s earlier career had made the interaction of medicine, philosophy, astrology and natural causation part of the intellectual landscape. The Dondi family had linked learned astronomy to clocks, diagrams and technical construction. The Carrara lords had used university patronage as part of the city’s prestige.
The Carrara “professorship policy”, described by the University of Padua’s heritage project, deliberately attracted prominent teachers. Biagio Pelacani da Parma, for example, was appointed to philosophy and astrology in 1384.
By 1399, the students of philosophical and medical disciplines had broken organisationally from the older jurists’ university and formed the autonomous Universitas Artistorum.
That matters because the opening of the Voynich material window does not encounter a city beginning to learn these subjects.
It encounters an already mature knowledge system.
1388: A Warning About Libraries and Political Power
There is an earlier event that becomes unexpectedly useful for thinking about 1405.
When Padua fell to the Visconti in 1388, Treccani records that valuable parts of the Carrara library were taken toward Pavia. Francesco Novello later worked to rebuild the collection, recovering some books and acquiring others.
This is historically important because it demonstrates a mechanism that Voynich provenance research often discusses only in the abstract.
Political defeat can physically reroute manuscripts.
A princely library is not a stationary database. Conquest can split it. Books can be seized, inherited, sold, gifted, borrowed, copied or carried away.
That does not connect Voynich to the Carrara collection. It tells us what kinds of movement were historically possible in this exact political ecosystem.
c. 1390–1404: The Carrara Herbal
British Library Egerton MS 2020 provides the first major object anchor.
The British Library dates the manuscript approximately 1390–1404 and locates its origin in Padua. It contains an Italian translation of Serapion the Younger’s materia medica tradition. Carrara arms appear in the manuscript, and the colophon names Jacopo Filippo of Padua as scribe.
The book therefore demonstrates that before the Voynich parchment window opens, Padua can already produce a sophisticated medical manuscript that combines:
- court commission;
- vernacular language;
- Arabic-derived medical knowledge mediated through Latin;
- plant imagery;
- large codex architecture;
- local scribal production;
- court identity and intellectual self-presentation.
The value of this object is not visual resemblance.
It is capability evidence.
1403: Bartolomeo da Montagnana Enters the Record
One year before Zago’s inventory, a young Paduan physician completed his doctorate.
Treccani records Bartolomeo da Montagnana receiving his medical doctorate on 18 February 1403 after studying under Marsilio Santasofia.
Montagnana matters because his later career shows how the Paduan medical network worked across the entire Voynich parchment interval.
He would practise medicine, participate in the physicians’ guild, teach practical medicine at the university, produce large numbers of patient-specific consilia, write pharmaceutical material and discuss therapeutic baths.
His career does not prove Voynich is medical.
It proves that in this time and place, several categories that modern readers often separate could coexist inside one physician’s working system.
9 May 1404: Zago Freezes One Moment of the Carrara Library
On 9 May 1404, Francesco Zago made his now-famous list of Francesco Novello’s books.
Sarah R. Kyle’s reconstruction describes 57 manuscripts in the initial list. Four more were added later. The entries could include titles, authors or contents, language, binding, format and identifying marks.
The document is useful not because it gives us a complete medieval library catalogue.
It does not.
It is useful because it gives us a dated state snapshot.
Padua, 9 May 1404: a ruling court possesses and circulates a library in which health and medicine dominate the surviving inventory.
Kyle reports more than two-thirds of the titles as medical or health-related, with especially significant Arabic medical influence.
The inventory includes the Carrara Herbal under a vernacular Serapion description. Treccani also notes medical works associated with Paduan professors such as Marsilio Santasofia and Pietro da Pernumia.
But the document also gives the hypothesis a hard negative control:
no surviving entry has been established as Beinecke MS 408.
1404: The Window Opens Into War
The opening of the Voynich parchment interval coincides not with political calm but with the escalation of Carrara–Venetian conflict.
Francesco Novello’s expansion into Verona in 1404 helped trigger the confrontation that would end his state.
For historical reconstruction, war changes the meaning of every network edge.
- Travel becomes harder or changes route.
- Libraries can be moved for safety.
- Officials and scholars can flee.
- Credit networks break or shift.
- Property can be confiscated.
- Patronage disappears.
- New patrons become available elsewhere.
- Institutions may survive under a new ruler.
That is why the year 1404 is more than a numerical coincidence in the Padua corridor. It is the beginning of a systems transition.
1405: Siege, Plague, Exhaustion and the End of the Carrara State
Dario Canzian’s study of the 1405 siege describes a city under severe pressure: overcrowding, shortages, deteriorating sanitary conditions and plague. The final siege lasted almost five months.
Treccani records Padua’s civic representatives seeking dedication to Venice as resistance became futile. The Venetian Senate accepted Padua’s dedication on 22 November 1405.
The political distinction was sharp. Venice accepted the city but did not negotiate a settlement preserving Francesco Novello’s rule.
Francesco Novello and his sons were taken to Venice. In January 1406, they were killed in prison.
The Carraresi were no longer the political host.
This is the rupture point.
But 1405 Does Not Reset Padua to Zero
Political history encourages us to think in chapters: one dynasty ends, another government begins.
Knowledge systems are less tidy.
A physician trained before the conquest remains trained after it. A student’s notebook does not forget its contents because the city changes ruler. A manuscript exemplar can survive its commissioner. An apothecary can continue to sell compounds. A lecturer can continue to teach if the new regime values the institution.
Padua is especially important because Venice did value the university.
The University of Padua’s own timeline states that after 1405 the Studio became the only university centre in territory controlled by the Serenissima. In 1407, Venice imposed educational protectionism requiring Venetian subjects seeking higher studies to attend Padua. In 1409, the government encouraged the hiring of celebrated foreign professors.
The political host changed; the scholarly machine was re-hosted rather than erased.
1406–1409: Montagnana Shows Continuity in Practice
Bartolomeo da Montagnana’s biography crosses the regime change almost seamlessly.
He was already practising before the fall. In 1406, Treccani records him as syndic of the physicians’ guild. By 1409, he was teaching practical medicine at the Studio.
This is exactly the kind of continuity that a network model predicts.
Court patronage can disappear while professional institutions, civic practice and university teaching continue.
1407–1413: Michele Savonarola Grows Inside the New Venetian Padua
Michele Savonarola provides a second human timeline.
Treccani places him as an arts student in Padua in 1407, studying under Paolo Veneto and Biagio Pelacani. In 1408 he appears as a magister and student of medicine. He participated in medical promotion ceremonies in 1412 and completed his private and public medical examinations in 1413.
Savonarola was therefore formed intellectually during the first years after the Carrara collapse.
His later work would range across practical medicine, physiognomy, plague, diet, women and children, thermal waters and civic description.
Again, the point is not to make him a Voynich author.
The point is that the early Venetian period did not produce a thinner Padua. It produced another generation capable of carrying a broad medical system forward.
1410s: The Network Becomes More Important Than the Court
Once the Carrara court disappears, following only rulers becomes a bad way to follow knowledge.
The important nodes become:
- the Studio;
- the College of physicians and philosophers;
- individual teachers;
- students from outside Padua;
- hospitals and civic medicine;
- apothecaries;
- medical households;
- scribes and bookmakers;
- Venetian political administration;
- routes connecting Padua to the rest of northern Italy and beyond.
This shift matters enormously for Voynich.
If a manuscript belonged to a portable technical or medical culture, we should not expect its history to map neatly onto dynastic history.
1422–1435: Montagnana’s Practical-Medicine Teaching
Treccani records Montagnana teaching extraordinary practical medicine from 1422 to 1435, then ordinary practical medicine from 1435 until his death.
This period sits directly inside the Voynich parchment interval.
It is useful because “practical medicine” is not a vague label. Montagnana’s career connected formal university learning to individual cases, consultations, remedies and pharmaceutical knowledge.
His consilia were requested from beyond Padua. His knowledge therefore travelled without requiring his physical movement every time.
A question could travel to Padua.
An answer could travel back out.
This is a historical example of remote knowledge routing centuries before electronic communication.
1420s–1430s: Why a Manuscript Could Be Paduan Without Looking Like a Court Book
The Carrara Herbal is luxurious, heraldic and clearly tied to a prince.
Voynich is different.
That difference is sometimes treated as an argument against Padua.
It may be.
But only if the hypothesis claims that Voynich is another Carrara court manuscript.
The broader Padua hypothesis does not.
By the 1420s and 1430s, the relevant unit is the knowledge network. A working manuscript made for a physician, student, practitioner, workshop or mobile scholar could differ radically from a luxury princely book while still drawing on the same intellectual environment.
This is why the Carrara Herbal should function as a control for capability and tradition, not as a visual template that Voynich must imitate.
1433–1438: Savonarola Enters University Teaching
Treccani finds Michele Savonarola in Paduan academic records as a lecturer by 1433. He entered the city’s governing elite in 1435 and remained tied to Padua until moving to Ferrara in 1440.
The endpoint of the Voynich parchment range therefore lands in a Padua that is still producing highly mobile medical expertise.
That is historically more important than any attempt to squeeze one famous person into the role of anonymous author.
A Timeline Is Not a Causal Chain
Chronological proximity is one of the most powerful generators of false historical certainty.
The fact that event A happened in 1404 and event B belongs to a 1404–1438 material window does not prove A caused B.
For the Padua hypothesis, the timeline earns significance only when events are connected by mechanisms.
Examples of real mechanisms would be:
- a documented teacher–student relationship;
- a manuscript loan;
- a known copy of a text;
- a named scribe;
- a commission;
- a payment;
- a migration;
- a confiscation;
- a library transfer;
- a consultation network;
- a recorded institutional rule.
Where those edges are missing, the series will mark them missing.
The 1404–1438 Window as a Stack of States
Instead of seeing thirty-four years as one undifferentiated period, we can model it as a sequence of changing historical states.
State A: Late Carrara Padua
Court patronage + university medicine + illustrated books + vernacular medical translation + medically concentrated princely library.
State B: War and Siege
Political instability + shrinking resources + population stress + mobility disruption + elevated risk of dispersal.
State C: Venetian Takeover
Dynastic termination + confiscation risk + new administration + surviving civic and university structures.
State D: Re-hosted University
Venetian protection + imported professors + continued medical training + wider state catchment.
State E: Mature Fifteenth-Century Medical Network
Montagnana’s practical medicine + consilia + pharmaceutical circulation + Savonarola’s formation + growing outward transmission.
A Voynich–Padua model must specify which state it actually needs.
Otherwise “Padua” becomes a label covering half a century of changing institutions.
Three Different Date Questions We Must Keep Apart
- When was the parchment produced? The radiocarbon question.
- When was the manuscript materially executed? The palaeographic, codicological and forensic question.
- When did the knowledge represented in it originate? The intellectual-history question.
Those dates can differ.
A manuscript written around 1425 can preserve a text or method from 1300. A Paduan student in 1415 can copy something learned from a Parisian or Arabic-derived source. A book assembled after 1430 can incorporate older exemplars.
This is why historical dating should be layered rather than singular.
What the Window Predicts If Padua Matters
A good chronological hypothesis should produce expectations.
- We should find Paduan comparators on both sides of 1405, not only in the Carrara court.
- Technical and medical continuity should be traceable through people who cross the regime boundary.
- Some knowledge should travel outward through students, physicians or manuscript transmission.
- We should expect both Latin and vernacular interfaces.
- We should expect imported knowledge to be localised rather than purely invented in Padua.
- We should expect political rupture to create missing ownership or dispersal edges without automatically destroying intellectual continuity.
- If Voynich belongs to this network, its strongest correspondences should involve structures that survive representation changes, not just decorative resemblance.
What the Window Does Not Predict
- that every manuscript made between 1404 and 1438 in northern Italy is relevant;
- that the Carrara defeat created the Voynich Manuscript;
- that a missing Carrara book must be Voynich;
- that a Paduan-trained physician wrote the text;
- that the earliest possible parchment date is the likeliest writing date;
- that Venetian rule implies Venetian physical production;
- that medical breadth in Padua proves the meaning of Voynich imagery.
The Most Interesting Shape in the Timeline
The timeline has a distinctive shape.
First, a dense late-medieval court and university build capability.
Then the political host collapses.
Then the university is absorbed into a larger state and strengthened as a knowledge centre.
Meanwhile, physicians trained before, during and after the rupture continue to teach and transmit.
The Padua corridor is therefore not a single workshop hypothesis. It is a continuity-through-transition hypothesis.
That is much more interesting.
It is also much harder to test properly.

The Final Idea
The numbers 1404 and 1438 do not say “Padua”.
They do something more useful.
They tell us where in time to look.
When we look carefully, Padua is already medically and technically mature at the beginning of the window, undergoes a violent political transition almost immediately, and then continues as a powerful university environment under Venice while physicians such as Montagnana and Savonarola carry practical knowledge through the same decades.
The chronological coincidence is real. The causal connection is not yet established. Our job is to build or break the bridge between them.
