Voynich Comparator | Wellcome MS.8515: Calendar, Eclipses, Zodiac Medicine and the Working Science of c.1425

One of the biggest mistakes we can make with the Voynich Manuscript is to separate subjects that a fifteenth-century practitioner may not have separated.

Astronomy over here.

Medicine over there.

Calendar somewhere else.

Recipes at the back.

Wellcome MS.8515 refuses that modern filing system.

Compiled around 1425, probably in London or southern England, it is a practical manual of calendar computation, astronomy, astrology and astrological medicine. It contains a version of John Somer’s calendar, methods for calculating movable feasts, planetary character information, medical advice conditioned on zodiacal signs, and tables of solar and lunar eclipses. Later users added medical recipes in English.

The manuscript therefore joins three things that the Voynich also places in uncomfortable proximity:

  • the sky;
  • the body;
  • practical treatment.

That does not make the Voynich an English astro-medical manual.

It tells us that around 1425, those categories could genuinely belong to one working knowledge system.

MS.8515 is a control for integration: time, planets, zodiac, eclipses and medicine can share one practical manuscript without any of them being decorative extras.

The Calendar Is Not Administrative Background

Modern readers often treat a medieval calendar as a front-matter convenience.

In MS.8515, calculation is part of the operating system.

Religious feast days move.

Lunar cycles matter.

Eclipses are computed.

Planetary and zodiacal conditions matter to the medical material.

Time is therefore an input to action.

This gives us a stronger interpretation framework for Voynich circular and zodiac pages.

They may not merely describe the heavens.

In a practical knowledge system, celestial diagrams can tell the user when something should be done.

Astronomy Can Become a Scheduling Layer for Medicine

The Wellcome description states that MS.8515 includes a treatise on administering medicine according to a person’s zodiacal sign and considers celestial effects on the four humours, citing Galen and Isaac Judaeus.

This is not astronomy sitting next to medicine by accident.

The sky becomes part of the decision process.

That architecture is especially relevant to the Voynich because its zodiac, body-like and pharmaceutical material have often been treated as separate mysteries.

MS.8515 demonstrates a historically real mechanism by which they could belong to one workflow.

Again: could.

Not did.

Eclipse Tables Are Prediction, Not Decoration

MS.8515 contains eclipse data for two intervals: 1425–1443 and 1444–1462.

This makes the manuscript forward-looking.

A table is useful because it supports future calculation and anticipation.

That is important for Voynich diagram analysis.

A technical astronomical page may encode:

  • description of a cosmic model;
  • prediction of events;
  • conversion between cycles;
  • timing rules;
  • medical election;
  • prognostication.

Those are different jobs even when all use circles and stars.

The correct comparator therefore asks about function, not only iconography.

The Manuscript Contains a Missing Gathering

The Wellcome record describes the surviving object as three gatherings of eight, eight and four leaves, with the original second gathering of eight leaves lost.

This makes MS.8515 useful for another Voynich problem.

A technical manual can survive in incomplete form.

Missing material can interrupt an otherwise coherent system.

But the remaining text can still reveal enough structure to identify the book’s job.

This is a healthy counterweight to the Voynich tendency to make missing leaves carry too much mystery.

Loss creates uncertainty.

It does not automatically destroy system identity.

Later Recipes Show That a Technical Book Can Keep Growing

The original manual did not remain frozen.

Later hands added remedies for ague, plague, heat in the stomach, bleeding, deafness and other conditions.

This creates another state transition:

carefully compiled computational manual → inherited working object → added practical recipes

A manuscript can therefore accumulate functions without losing its earlier ones.

This matters for the Voynich’s marginalia and possible later layers.

A later addition does not necessarily mean corruption.

It may mean use.

A Blank Title Space Is a Small but Important Control

The Wellcome catalogue notes that the title space for the zodiacal medical treatise was left blank, possibly because the compiler did not know its conventional title.

This is a useful reminder for the Voynich Paratext Problem.

Not every medieval technical text has perfect bibliographic identity.

A compiler can know how to use material without preserving a clean author-title citation.

Therefore absence of a title is not evidence of secrecy by itself.

The Voynich remains far more extreme because title, author and headings are absent or unreadable across the whole object.

But MS.8515 gives us a measured historical baseline rather than a binary rule.

This Is What a Practical Science Interface Looks Like

The manuscript is not primarily trying to tell a story.

It is helping a user compute, classify, decide and act.

That shifts how we should approach the Voynich.

A page may be an interface.

A circular diagram may not be an illustration of a paragraph.

It may be a device the reader consults.

A label may function like a coordinate.

A repeated star may mark an entry point.

A recipe paragraph may be the action layer at the end of a larger decision chain.

These are hypotheses to test, but MS.8515 proves the interface model is historically plausible.

The English Origin Is a Useful Geographic Negative Control

Our Padua hypothesis naturally concentrates attention on northern Italy.

MS.8515 is valuable because it is probably English.

Yet it still combines:

  • calendar computation;
  • planetary material;
  • zodiac medicine;
  • eclipses;
  • humours;
  • later recipes.

Therefore those combinations have weak localisation power.

If a supposedly “Paduan” clue also appears naturally in a London-area manuscript, it must be downweighted in the Padua score.

This is what a real comparator library should do.

Not only find similarities.

Remove false localisation.

What MS.8515 Can Legitimately Teach Voynich Research

  • Around 1425, calendar computation, astronomy, astrology and medicine could form one practical manuscript system.
  • Zodiac information could directly condition medical treatment.
  • Eclipse tables belong to predictive practice, not merely celestial illustration.
  • A technical book could survive with missing gatherings.
  • Later users could add recipes to an older scientific core.
  • A compiler might preserve useful material even when a conventional title was uncertain.
  • The same integrated astro-medical architecture existed outside Italy.
  • Voynich section boundaries should therefore be tested for workflow relations, not assumed to be separate subjects.

What It Does Not Prove

  • that Voynich is English;
  • that Voynich follows John Somer;
  • that its zodiac pages govern treatment;
  • that its star-like recipe bullets are astronomical coordinates;
  • that missing Voynich leaves explain all discontinuities;
  • that later recipe additions explain Voynich Currier A/B;
  • that one integrated comparator identifies Voynich function.

The eduKate Workflow Test

  1. Represent MS.8515 as a workflow rather than a table of contents.
  2. Identify inputs: date, lunar state, planet, zodiac sign, body state.
  3. Identify transforms: calculation, lookup, prognostication.
  4. Identify outputs: treatment timing, medical action, recipe.
  5. Measure which page types serve each stage.
  6. Build the same role-based representation for other astro-medical manuals.
  7. Only then test whether Voynich page clusters can support an analogous workflow.
  8. Require the same labels or structures to behave consistently across pages.
  9. Reject models that make astronomical pages decorative when medical predictions require them operationally.
  10. Keep regional origin separate from system architecture.

Student Lens: Knowledge Can Be a Workflow

Primary: weather forecast → choose clothes. One kind of information changes an action in another domain.

Lower Secondary: calendar + measurement + rule → decision. Map the sequence rather than memorising page categories.

Upper Secondary: distinguish descriptive data from operational data: a table can tell you not only what is true but when to act.

The Final Idea

MS.8515 is not mysterious.

That is why it matters.

Its calendar can be read.

Its eclipses can be identified.

Its medical astrology can be described.

Its later recipes can be dated as later additions.

And once we see the whole thing working, an important lesson becomes visible:

In an early-fifteenth-century technical book, the sky, the calendar, the body and the remedy do not have to be separate subjects. They can be successive layers of one decision system.
