A Singapore student may grow up using English and Mandarin. Another uses English and Malay. Another may use Tamil at home and English at school. Another child may use three languages with different people.
Does already knowing more than one language make it easier to learn new English vocabulary?
That question sounds simple. It is not.
“Bilingual” can describe learners who differ in age of acquisition, proficiency, home language, school language, literacy, amount of exposure, language similarity and socioeconomic context.
Yet the question has been studied often enough for researchers to ask: across many studies, is there an average pattern?
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the April 2026 issue of the International Journal of Bilingualism examined 14 studies, 37 effect sizes and 1,984 participants.
Marieke Hordijk and Marco Bril compared monolingual learners with bilingual learners on vocabulary knowledge in English as a foreign language.
The result: a small average bilingual advantage. The overall effect size was Hedges’ g = .20.
That means bilingual learners, on average across the included studies, scored somewhat higher on English vocabulary measures. But the effect was small.
The meta-analysis also found that the bilingual advantage was not significantly moderated by receptive versus productive vocabulary testing or by child versus adolescent age group. The studies were also substantially heterogeneous.
So the correct public conclusion is not “Bilingual children are better at vocabulary.” It is: Across the included EFL studies, bilingual learners showed a small average vocabulary advantage, but bilingualism is too diverse to treat as a single causal explanation.
Quick answer: what is a bilingual vocabulary advantage?
A bilingual vocabulary advantage means bilingual learners outperform monolingual comparison learners, on average, on a particular vocabulary-learning or vocabulary-knowledge measure.
It does not mean every bilingual learner has a larger English vocabulary. It does not mean bilingualism guarantees better English. It does not mean monolingual learners are disadvantaged individuals.
It means the group average differs under the conditions studied.
Group averages do not describe every child
Suppose the bilingual group average is 82 and the monolingual group average is 79. There can still be monolingual learners at 95, bilingual learners at 60 and enormous overlap.
A small average difference tells us something about populations. It does not diagnose one student.
What did the 2026 meta-analysis include?
The authors focused specifically on English as a foreign language. They did this deliberately because English has unusual global status and is widely available through school, media, the internet and popular culture.
The meta-analysis also focused on consecutive bilinguals rather than simply collapsing every type of multilingual learner into one group. That improves interpretability, but it also limits generalisation.
Why might bilingualism help vocabulary learning?
The paper discusses several plausible mechanisms.
Lexical awareness
A bilingual learner already knows one concept can have more than one label. This may strengthen awareness that word form and meaning are related but not identical.
Metalinguistic awareness
Using more than one language may increase attention to how languages differ, how word order works, how sounds map to meaning and how grammar varies. A learner may become better at noticing language as a system.
Phonological discrimination
Knowing two sound systems may provide experience distinguishing different phonological contrasts. That could help when learning unfamiliar English word forms.
Phonological short-term memory
Some research has proposed that bilingual learners may develop strengths relevant to holding new sound sequences long enough to form lexical representations.
These are candidate mechanisms. The 2026 meta-analysis did not experimentally prove which mechanism causes the average advantage.
Do not turn plausible mechanisms into established causes
“Bilinguals have better working memory, therefore they learn vocabulary better” is too strong. Better: researchers have proposed lexical awareness, phonological memory and sound discrimination as possible contributors to observed group differences.
Meta-analysis can show pattern. It does not automatically show mechanism.
The advantage was small
Hedges’ g of .20 is generally interpreted as a small effect. That means bilingualism is not an overwhelming predictor.

Children versus adolescents did not significantly change the advantage
The included studies covered children and adolescents. Age group did not significantly moderate the effect.
That suggests the small advantage appeared across both broad age groupings. But age still interacts with exposure, schooling, proficiency and literacy. The result says this particular moderator did not explain the between-study effect.
The studies were heterogeneous
This may be the most important caution in the paper. The meta-analysis found systematic variation across studies. The effect sizes were not perfectly consistent.
Why might they differ? Possible variables include first-language background, second-language proficiency, typological distance, English exposure, educational context and cultural context.
The authors explicitly call for more attention to language-background variables. “Bilingual” is not one learner profile.
Singapore makes the word “bilingual” especially complicated
Singapore students often operate inside institutional bilingualism. English may be school language, academic language and common language. A Mother Tongue language may be home language, family language, school subject or heritage language.
For one learner, Mandarin may be stronger orally. For another, English dominates. Another may use Malay at home and English with siblings.
A simple checkbox—bilingual or monolingual—hides a great deal.
Bilingualism can create both support and competition
Knowing more than one language can help through cognates, shared morphology, conceptual transfer and metalinguistic awareness. It can also create interference, competing pronunciations, collocation transfer and spelling conflict.
The same learner can experience advantage and interference in different words. That is why a whole-person label is too coarse.
Cognates can create local advantage
English biology, French biologie and Spanish biología visibly share form. A learner who already knows a related form may gain fast access.
Now compare a non-cognate word such as reluctant. No obvious cross-language support. The bilingual advantage may vary word by word.
Different scripts change the experience
English is alphabetic. Mandarin uses morphosyllabic characters. Tamil uses an abugida. Learners familiar with different writing systems may develop different forms of orthographic awareness.
Do not assume every bilingual experience provides the same benefit.
A bilingual student can still have a weak English vocabulary
A multilingual learner may have rich conceptual knowledge, strong home-language vocabulary and limited academic English vocabulary.
The problem is not “bilingualism failed”. The learner may simply need more English lexical exposure in a specific domain.
