Contracting or Expanding Spacing in Vocabulary Learning? Why the Best Review Schedule Can Change With the Kind of Word Knowledge You Need

Most students already know the broad advice: do not cram vocabulary. Review words over time.

Good.

But that leaves a harder question.

Suppose a word is reviewed four times. Should the intervals get longer, stay equal or get shorter?

Expanding

1 day → 3 days → 7 days → 14 days.

Equal

3 days → 3 days → 3 days → 3 days.

Contracting

7 days → 3 days → 1 day.

All three are spaced. They differ in how the spacing changes.

A 2026 study in Language Teaching Research by Kang Zhai tested exactly this question.

The study recruited 152 pre-intermediate English learners and compared equal spacing, expanded spacing and contracting spacing.

The researchers measured both receptive word knowledge and productive word knowledge at immediate and delayed post-tests.

The result was not “one schedule wins.” Contracting spacing showed an advantage for both receptive and productive knowledge immediately after learning. But in the delayed test, expanded spacing showed an advantage for productive word knowledge.

That gives us a more useful conclusion than “space your vocabulary.” It suggests: the best schedule can depend on whether you need short-term accessibility or long-term productive retrieval.

Quick answer: what is contracting spacing?

Contracting spacing means the gaps between reviews become shorter.

Example: Day 1, Day 8, Day 11, Day 12.

The learner begins with larger separation and then reviews more closely near the final test or use point.

This can create concentrated strengthening toward the end.

What is expanding spacing?

Expanding spacing means the gaps become longer.

Example: Day 1, Day 2, Day 5, Day 12.

The early reviews happen sooner. Later reviews demand longer retrieval across time.

This often feels like gradually removing support.

What is equal spacing?

Productive knowledge means retrieving and using the word yourself. You need a verb meaning “reduce harmful impact” and produce mitigate.

Imagine an exam is tomorrow. The learner studied a word one week ago, then three days ago, then today.

The increasingly close reviews may keep retrieval accessibility high near the test.

But immediate performance is not the whole learning goal.

Why expanding spacing may help delayed productive knowledge

Productive recall benefits from successful retrieval under growing difficulty.

If each interval becomes longer, the learner must reconstruct the word after more forgetting has begun.

Mathematics

Target: asymptote.

Early: recognise from a graph. Later: define from memory. Then explain the relationship precisely in a new problem.

Productive mathematical language requires delayed explanation.

Humanities

Target: legitimacy.

Early: definition. Later: distinguish from legality. Later still: apply to a historical case.

The gap expands while task depth increases.

That is stronger than repeated copying.

Contracting schedules can be useful near an exam

Suppose an O-Level English paper is in five days. A learner wants to reactivate dormant but previously learned vocabulary.

Review gaps may naturally contract: Day -5, Day -3, Day -1.
