Gamified, Digital or Paper Flashcards for Vocabulary? Why the Best Tool Depends on What the Learner Must Actually Know

A student has three ways to revise the same twenty words.

One stack is made of paper cards.

One app shows digital cards with sound and pictures.

One app adds points, badges, progress bars and game-like feedback.

Which one teaches vocabulary best?

The tempting answer is:

the most advanced technology.

But that is too simple.

A 2026 study by Ali Soyoof, Barry Lee Reynolds, Ehsan Rassaei and Boris Vazquez-Calvo compared paper flashcards, non-gamified digital flashcards and gamified mobile flashcards with 98 Iranian learners aged 9–11.

All three groups improved.

The gamified group showed the largest immediate gains, followed by the digital group and then the paper group. Importantly, the researchers measured not only receptive vocabulary knowledge but also productive collocation knowledge.

That second measure matters.

A learner may know:

decision = a choice after thinking.

But natural English needs:

make a decision

not:

do a decision.

Vocabulary learning is therefore not only remembering what a word means. It is also learning:

  • what the word sounds like;
  • what it looks like;
  • what grammatical role it plays;
  • which words normally accompany it;
  • and whether the learner can retrieve it without the card.

The useful question is not:

Which flashcard is modern?

It is:

Which learning operation does this flashcard make the student perform?

Quick answer

Paper, digital and gamified flashcards can all support vocabulary learning.

In the 2026 study, the gamified group achieved the strongest immediate gains in both receptive vocabulary and productive collocation measures. The digital group also outperformed the paper group.

But the study did not include a delayed post-test. So it cannot establish that gamified flashcards produced the strongest long-term retention.

That boundary is essential.

Vocabulary recognition and vocabulary use are different jobs

Imagine the word:

A receptive flashcard might ask:

Which meaning matches commitment?

A productive collocation task might ask:

Complete the phrase: ______ a commitment.

Possible answer:

make a commitment.

Or:

honour a commitment.

These are deeper lexical tasks.

The first requires recognition.

The second requires the learner to retrieve a conventional phrase.

A flashcard system that produces good recognition but weak phrase use may create:

familiar-looking vocabulary that still does not enter real English.

Why digital flashcards can add more than a screen

A paper card can show:

  • a word;
  • a definition;
  • perhaps an example sentence.

A digital card can add:

  • audio;
  • images;
  • automatic review;
  • immediate checking;
  • reordering;
  • progress records.

That can create richer input.

For example, a learner studying:

rustle

can see the spelling, hear the pronunciation and perhaps view leaves moving.

The word becomes connected across several representations.

But more channels are useful only when they carry relevant information.

An animation that makes the card look exciting but adds no lexical meaning may increase:

attention to the interface

without increasing:

attention to the word.

Gamification can change persistence

The gamified condition in the 2026 study included features intended to increase engagement and motivation.

That can matter because vocabulary learning is repetitive.

One exposure rarely produces strong, flexible knowledge.

If a learner is more willing to:

  • return;
  • retrieve;
  • correct;
  • repeat;
  • and continue after an error,

then the game layer may indirectly improve learning by increasing the amount and quality of useful practice.

This gives us an important distinction:

The game is not automatically the learning mechanism.

The game may improve:

participation in the learning mechanism.

Points are not memory

A learner can earn:

10,000 points

while still failing to retrieve:

the target word next week.

A streak records behaviour.

A badge records an achievement rule inside the app.

Neither proves:

durable lexical access.

For that, we need:

  • delayed recall;
  • new contexts;
  • independent production;
  • reading or listening transfer.

The missing delayed test matters

The 2026 paper explicitly identifies an important limitation:

there was no delayed post-test.

So the study can tell us:

which groups showed stronger gains by the end of the intervention.

It cannot tell us with the same confidence:

which tool produced the most durable knowledge weeks later.

This is exactly why parents and teachers should avoid treating:

high app performance

as identical to:

long-term vocabulary learning.

Paper flashcards still have real strengths

Paper is not a failed technology.

Paper cards can be:

  • fast to create;
  • free of notifications;
  • easy to sort physically;

A student can make three piles:

do not know.

That physical simplicity can reduce interface friction.

The research result therefore does not justify:

throwing away paper.

The biggest design question is what appears on the card

Weak card:

Useful start.

But a stronger card might include:

mitigate harm

Now the learner sees:

  • meaning;
  • collocation;
  • grammar;
  • word family.

The flashcard format matters.

The lexical design matters more.

Do not overload one card

The opposite mistake is building a miniature textbook on every card.

If the front contains:

  • definition;
  • three synonyms;
  • four antonyms;
  • etymology;
  • picture;
  • five example sentences;
  • translation;
  • pronunciation;

then the learner may never perform a clean retrieval.

A flashcard should have:

one clear retrieval job.

A card should ask a question

Good:

What verb means reduce the severity of harm?

Answer:

mitigate.

Later card:

Complete the collocation: ______ risk.

Answer:

mitigate risk.

Later still:

Use mitigate in a sentence about climate adaptation.

Now the learner moves from:

recognition → retrieval → collocation → transfer.

Singapore Primary English

A Primary student may use cards for:

glimpse
hesitate
reluctant
relief.

Do not stop at meanings.

Add phrase knowledge:

catch a glimpse
hesitate before answering
reluctant to admit
a sense of relief.

This supports composition and comprehension at the same time.

Secondary English

Secondary students need vocabulary that survives:

  • unseen comprehension;
  • summary;
  • situational writing;
  • continuous writing.

Cards should therefore move beyond:

word = definition.

Include:

  • register;
  • collocation;
  • near-synonym contrast.

Example:

allege ≠ prove.

Collocations:

allege wrongdoing
alleged misconduct.

General Paper

GP students often make flashcards that contain:

difficult nouns.

A more useful card asks:

How is this word used in argument?

Target:

externality

Phrase:

negative externality
impose costs on third parties.

Now vocabulary connects to:

reasoning.

Science

Target:

inhibit

Do not teach only:

prevent.

Teach:

inhibit enzyme activity
inhibit growth
inhibitory effect.

The word becomes usable inside the subject.

Mathematics

Mathematical vocabulary also has phrase structure:

common factor
corresponding angles
constant rate
consecutive integers.

A card can train the phrase as one unit.

Diagnosis before prescription

The child scores highly in the app but forgets words later

Diagnosis: immediate performance is stronger than delayed retention.

Repair: schedule delayed free-recall checks outside the app.

The learner knows definitions but writes strange combinations

Diagnosis: receptive word knowledge is stronger than productive collocation knowledge.

Repair: create cards that require the natural phrase, not only the meaning.

The learner avoids paper but works happily in a gamified app

Diagnosis: motivation or interface preference may affect practice volume.

Repair: use the preferred tool, but measure learning independently.

The learner becomes obsessed with points

Diagnosis: game outcome has replaced language outcome.

Repair: hide or de-emphasise points and test words in new sentences.

The student spends more time decorating cards than retrieving from them

Diagnosis: card construction is becoming the activity instead of vocabulary retrieval.

Repair: simplify card design.

A practical three-card sequence

Target:

compelling

Card 1 — meaning: What adjective means very convincing?

Card 2 — collocation: Complete: ______ evidence.

Card 3 — transfer: Use compelling evidence in a sentence about a Science experiment.

This sequence makes the flashcard set less like:

a list.

More like:

a small lexical training system.

Parents: ask what the child can do without the app

The most useful question is not:

How many cards did you finish?

Ask:

Which five words can you still use now without looking?

Then:

Can you use one in a new sentence?

Teachers: choose the technology after defining the lexical job

If the job is:

quick meaning recognition,

almost any flashcard system can work.

If the job is:

productive collocation,

the card must require phrase production.

If the job is:

long-term retention,

the system must return after delay.

AI-assisted vocabulary practice

A useful public prompt is:

“Turn these 12 vocabulary items into three rounds of flashcards. Round 1 should test meaning recall. Round 2 should test collocations. Round 3 should require use in new Singapore school, Science, Humanities or everyday contexts. Do not reveal the answer until I attempt retrieval, and bring difficult items back after increasing delays.”

A quiet literary lens

A word alone may be correct.

A word beside another word may suddenly become:

natural
awkward
precise
too strong.

The real vocabulary lives not only on the card.

It lives:

between the cards and the sentence.
