English Collocations Across Languages: Why Predictive Context Helps When Your First Language Suggests a Different Word Partnership

A student knows strong.

The same student knows evidence.

Yet knowing those two words does not automatically mean the learner will produce:

strong evidence

quickly, naturally and without hesitation.

Why?

Because vocabulary is not only a collection of separate word meanings. English also contains preferred word partnerships—collocations that recur often enough to become conventional.

For multilingual learners, another layer enters the problem. A first language may package the same idea using a very similar partnership, or it may package it differently. When the two languages align, the English combination can be easier to process. When they do not, the learner may know every word and still feel that the phrase is strangely assembled.

A 2026 eye-tracking study by Chao Xu and Lingshan Huang examined exactly this problem in Chinese learners of English. Participants read adjective–noun collocations that were either congruent or incongruent across languages, and those collocations appeared inside either predictive or neutral contexts.

The eye movements showed a clear pattern: incongruent collocations produced longer reading times and more regressions. Predictive context generally made processing easier, and it was especially useful at a later stage when learners were trying to integrate incongruent combinations.

Predictive context generally facilitated processing. But one significant interaction showed that it sharply reduced regression-out probability for incongruent collocations, while having much less effect on congruent items.

“Stop translating.”

ask:

“What phrase would you naturally use in your other language?”

If the unusual English combination mirrors that pattern, we have found a plausible source of transfer.

Now the correction can be specific:

“That combination belongs naturally to your other language. English packages the same idea differently.”

The learner receives a contrast, not a scolding.

Predictive context should make the partnership feel inevitable

Target:

bitter disappointment

Weak first exposure:

She felt bitter disappointment.

Better first exposure:

She had trained for four years and lost the final by one point. When the result appeared, the defeat brought bitter disappointment.

The context prepares:

  • strong negative emotion;
  • loss;
  • frustrated expectation.

Now the adjective–noun partnership is not an arbitrary pair to memorise.

It is:

meaning becoming phrase.

But the context must eventually disappear

If the learner only recognises:

bitter disappointment

inside the exact training sentence, independent phrase knowledge is still weak.

Later test:

“What adjective naturally combines with disappointment when the emotion is intense and painful?”

Then:

“Write a new sentence using bitter disappointment without copying the original context.”

This moves from:

supported processing → retrieval → transfer.

Collocations are not arbitrary prison cells

Students sometimes misunderstand collocations as rigid rules:

“Only one adjective can ever go with this noun.”

Not so.

Consider:
