Tangential Voynich object-world experiment 02. This article does not claim that the Voynich Manuscript was created for a Renaissance Kunstkammer. The classic Kunstkammer belongs mainly to a later collecting culture. We use that later world deliberately as an alien comparator to ask whether rarity, heterogeneity, marvel, controlled display and conversation reveal overlooked properties of the manuscript.

What If the Manuscript’s Job Was to Make a Room Stop Talking?
Imagine the manuscript is carried into a room filled with strange things.
A coral branch that looks like stone. A shell whose geometry seems impossible. An automaton. A mathematical instrument. An unfamiliar animal part. A miniature object of astonishing craftsmanship. A map from somewhere most visitors have never seen. A carved cabinet with secret drawers. A manuscript no one in the room can immediately explain.
The owner does not apologise for the confusion.
The confusion is part of the collection.
The Metropolitan Museum describes the sixteenth-century Kunst- und Wunderkammer as a collecting world that brought together naturalia, artificialia and scientifica: products of nature, products of human craft, and objects demonstrating knowledge and technical control. These rooms could be encyclopaedic, didactic, political and spectacular at the same time. The Met: Collecting for the Kunstkammer.
Another Met exhibition described the Kunstkammer as simultaneously a place of amusement, scientific investigation and political magnificence. The Met: Making Marvels.
That combination is useful to Tangential Voynich because it breaks one of our strongest habits: the belief that an object must have one primary category.
The Cabinet Does Not Ask Every Object to Explain Itself
A modern library wants classification.
A curiosity cabinet can profit from instability.
An object may be valuable precisely because it sits between categories:
- natural and artificial;
- scientific and artistic;
- useful and ornamental;
- known and unknown;
- local and foreign;
- serious and entertaining;
- authentic and legendary;
- instructional and astonishing.
The cabinet does not immediately destroy ambiguity. It curates it.
Now place the Voynich Manuscript inside that social logic.
Not historically. Experimentally.
What if our frustration with the manuscript partly comes from demanding that it choose one shelf?
Herbal.
Astronomy.
Medicine.
Cipher.
Recipe book.
Hoax.
What if the object itself grew from a culture in which gathering dissimilar kinds of wonder was not a defect?
Again, this does not identify its historical genre. It tells us to measure heterogeneity as a possible design feature rather than automatically treating heterogeneity as evidence that our section labels are wrong.
A New Variable: Wonder Density
Curiosity collections reward objects that generate questions.
Let us define a purely experimental quantity:
Wonder Density = rate of expectation violation per unit of interaction
This is not a historical measurement yet. It is a design question.
How often does the Voynich Manuscript force a viewer to revise the category they were using?
- A plant-like page contains forms that resist straightforward botanical identity.
- A circular diagram resembles astronomy but may not map cleanly to familiar astronomical structures.
- A text-like sequence behaves regularly but remains unlike ordinary readable prose.
- A foldout behaves like a diagrammatic overview yet complicates linear reading.
- Human-like figures appear in strange spatial systems whose function is not obvious.
The standard response is to treat each mismatch as a decoding problem.
The cabinet tangent asks whether the sequence of mismatches itself deserves measurement.
The First Test: Heterogeneity Without Collapse
The existing Voynich research matrix already warns us that several classifications overlap without collapsing into one another: physical bifolio, scribal hand, Currier regime, visual morphology and distributional cluster can align strongly in some places and diverge in others.
The cabinet-of-curiosities model asks a different question of that result:
What if the manuscript was never designed to become one clean taxonomy?
We can test this without accepting the cabinet metaphor.
Measure how many independent descriptive systems are required before page similarity becomes stable. If one classification explains most of the others, the object is comparatively reducible. If several orthogonal axes remain necessary, the manuscript is structurally plural.
The neutral residue is irreducible descriptive dimensionality.
The Second Test: Conversation Value
A curiosity object does not need to deliver an answer quickly. Its value may increase because it sustains conversation.
This suggests a receiver experiment.
Show anonymised page fragments to specialists from unrelated fields. Do not ask what the manuscript is. Ask each person to list:
- what seems familiar;
- what violates the familiar model;
- what feature they would measure next;
- what second specialist they would invite into the room.
An object with unusually high disciplinary branching generates many plausible expert invitations.
That does not prove it was designed for conversation. But it quantifies one of the reasons the object has remained intellectually productive for more than a century.
The Third Test: Does the Manuscript Behave Like a Microcosm?
Some Kunstkammer collections tried to gather a small world inside a room: nature, artifice, science, geography, rarity, craft and knowledge placed into relation.
Voynich has often been described in encyclopaedic terms because its imagery appears to move across several domains.
But “encyclopaedia” is too semantic for this stage.
Instead, test for microcosm architecture:
- Does the codex deliberately maximise interface diversity?
- Do very different visual populations share enough graphic grammar to feel like one constructed world?
- Are there repeated visual or textual bridges between otherwise unlike regions?
- Does the manuscript distribute several kinds of representation across one physical object rather than keeping each representation system isolated?
If yes, the neutral observation is that heterogeneous representations are integrated by recurrent local conventions.
That would matter under many possible explanations: compilation, curriculum, reference system, notebook, mnemonic system, collected exemplars or deliberately composite work.
The Fourth Test: Rarity as Function
Rarity can be accidental.
It can also be socially productive.
A rare object attracts attention because comparison is difficult. The fewer obvious siblings it has, the more interpretive work the viewer must perform.
Tangential Voynich therefore asks a dangerous but useful question:
What if uniqueness is not merely what happened to the manuscript after history destroyed its relatives? What if some degree of singularity was already part of the object’s appeal?
This cannot be answered by the surviving object alone. We do not know how many related manuscripts once existed.
But the question generates tests:
- Does the manuscript imitate common genres closely enough to be recognisable, then deviate at high-information points?
- Are singular visual forms concentrated rather than random?
- Do repeated motifs create internal familiarity even when external comparators remain poor?
- Does the codex look self-consistent in ways that reduce the need for external siblings?
The neutral residue is a measure of internal self-sufficiency versus external dependence.
The Fifth Test: The Performance of Explanation
Curiosity objects are often activated by explanation.
Someone knows the story.
Someone opens the cabinet.
Someone says where the object came from, what it is thought to be, what is hidden inside, why it is strange.
Now imagine that the Voynich Manuscript required a human mediator.
Not necessarily because the text was encoded. Perhaps the intended reading practice included oral instruction, demonstration, workshop habit or context unavailable on the page.
The experiment asks:
- Which page structures appear under-specified for an untrained reader?
- Which conventions become usable only after a few examples are explained?
- How much of the manuscript could be operated through learned convention rather than explicit written instruction?
This produces a neutral concept: mediator dependence.
Many historical knowledge systems depend on teachers, demonstrators, workshop masters or oral context. A page can be incomplete as a standalone object while functioning perfectly inside a trained community.
Where the Kunstkammer Model Fails
The classic princely Kunstkammer flourished mainly after the period indicated by the Voynich parchment’s early-fifteenth-century radiocarbon range. Treating that mature collecting institution as direct provenance would therefore be chronologically careless.
Good. The anachronism makes the comparator safer.
We are not saying a sixteenth-century collector commissioned the manuscript. We are borrowing a later, well-documented social logic in which wonder itself performs work.
If that borrowed logic produces useful neutral measurements, those measurements can then be returned to fifteenth-century comparators that are historically appropriate.
The Cabinet Test Against a Normal Reference Book
A practical reference book and a curiosity object should produce different design pressures.
A reference book tends to reward:
- retrievability;
- stable indexing;
- consistent categories;
- low ambiguity for the trained user;
- repeatable navigation.
A marvel-object can tolerate or reward:
- surprise;
- category crossing;
- reveal;
- rarity;
- controlled explanation;
- singularity;
- social display.
Voynich may combine some features from both lists. The useful research programme is not to choose one list emotionally. It is to quantify the trade-offs.
A Curiosity Function
We can define an experimental curiosity function:
C = N × U × B
where:
- N = novelty relative to the receiver’s prior categories;
- U = unresolvedness after initial inspection;
- B = branching, the number of plausible next questions the object generates.
An object with novelty but no unresolvedness becomes quickly classified.
An object with unresolvedness but no branching becomes merely confusing.
An object with all three can sustain fascination.
That final word matters because this entire object-world branch is moving toward one last experiment: perhaps fascination is not merely what happened to the Voynich Manuscript in modernity. Could fascination itself ever have been part of an object’s intended work?
Hostile Controls
To keep this from becoming romantic speculation, the cabinet model must face controls.
- Known technical manuscripts with heterogeneous illustrations.
- Known miscellanies compiled from unrelated sources.
- Known teaching books with multiple representational systems.
- Known prestige objects valued partly for marvel.
- Known collections in which rarity and explanation were socially important.
If Voynich’s heterogeneity is normal for practical compilation, the curiosity explanation loses force. If its structure differs in measurable ways, we keep only those differences.
Metaphor Removal
Delete the cabinet.
Delete the prince.
Delete the collector.
Delete the word wonder.
What survives?
- irreducible descriptive dimensionality;
- disciplinary branching;
- integrated heterogeneous representation;
- internal self-sufficiency;
- mediator dependence;
- expectation-violation density.
Those are real research questions independent of the alien world that generated them.
World Return
The cabinet closes.
The manuscript returns to its own evidence lane.
We have not moved its date.
We have not moved its provenance.
We have not called it a collector’s curiosity.
But we have learned something about ourselves.
We automatically treat ambiguity as damage to be repaired.
Human cultures have repeatedly discovered that ambiguity can also be a social resource.
That possibility now deserves testing rather than dismissal.
