Tangential Voynich | Treat the Manuscript as a Conversation Piece or Heirloom

Tangential Voynich object-world experiment 09. This article does not claim that the Voynich Manuscript was originally designed as an heirloom or conversation piece. It separates a question that mystery research often confuses: what an object was made to do is not necessarily the same as what later people found it useful for. The experiment tests social transmissibility, narrative accretion, custodial recontextualisation and the possibility that an artefact can remain valuable after its original operating knowledge disappears.

What If an Object Can Survive the Death of Its Instructions?

A grandfather leaves a watch to a child.

The child may never use it to tell time.

The watch still matters.

A ceremonial sword passes through a family after nobody expects it to be used in combat.

It still matters.

A scientific instrument becomes obsolete.

It enters a museum.

Its function changes again.

Human objects have biographies.

They are made under one set of conditions, used under another, inherited under another, misunderstood under another, collected under another, studied under another.

The Voynich Manuscript has clearly acquired an extraordinary modern social function: it attracts researchers, cryptographers, artists, historians, programmers, linguists, mathematicians, journalists and curious readers despite the absence of an accepted decipherment.

That fact is easy to misuse.

The fact that Voynich fascinates us now does not prove it was designed to fascinate its original receivers.

But the modern afterlife gives us a laboratory in which to understand how an object’s function can migrate.

Original Function and Acquired Function

Let an object begin with a purpose vector:

P₀ = purpose at production

As the object moves through time, later communities assign new functions:

P₁, P₂, P₃ … Pₙ

Some components remain stable.

Others disappear.

A manuscript once used for calculation may later become a collectible.

A devotional book may become evidence for art history.

A family document may become a national treasure.

An unreadable technical artefact may become a mystery.

This gives Tangential Voynich a necessary firewall:

present function ≠ original function

Yet function migration is itself historically meaningful.

The First Test: Functional Persistence

Some objects lose almost all value when their practical function disappears.

A disposable shipping label is not normally preserved for centuries.

Other objects remain valuable under repeated functional change.

Why?

Possible reasons include:

  • material value;
  • craftsmanship;
  • association with a person;
  • rarity;
  • beauty;
  • age;
  • religious or ceremonial significance;
  • intellectual difficulty;
  • story value;
  • identity value;
  • collectibility.

Call this functional persistence: the object’s ability to remain socially valuable after one important use channel becomes unavailable.

Voynich has exceptionally high modern functional persistence in one obvious sense: unreadability did not make it culturally inert.

That still tells us nothing certain about the fifteenth century. But it helps define the property we would need to study in historical comparators.

The Second Test: Story Attachment

An heirloom is rarely transmitted as bare matter.

It carries a story.

This belonged to your grandmother.

This was given after the war.

This came from another country.

Nobody remembers exactly what this symbol means.

Do not lose it.

A story can preserve an object after practical knowledge has decayed.

Conversely, the object can preserve a story after the people involved have disappeared.

This creates a coupled memory system:

object ↔ narrative

The problem for Voynich is that much of its early narrative context is lost or uncertain. We cannot simply reconstruct it from later stories.

But we can inventory story attachment sites:

  • ownership marks;
  • later foliation;
  • annotations;
  • binding interventions;
  • catalogue descriptions;
  • provenance records;
  • later names and classifications;
  • modern transcription conventions.

These are places where later communities attached explanatory layers to the object.

The Third Test: Narrative Accretion

Stories accumulate.

One owner says the object came from a scholar.

A later writer repeats it.

A speculative attribution becomes a convenient label.

After enough repetition, the label begins to feel like an observed feature.

This is especially dangerous in mystery research.

Tangential Voynich therefore treats every historical story as a versioned layer.

Let:

N₀ = earliest documented narrative claim

N₁ = later repetition

N₂ = later interpretation

N₃ = popular simplification

A later narrative should never travel backward and become evidence for an earlier state unless an independent chain supports it.

This is the narrative provenance rule.

The Fourth Test: Social Transmissibility

A conversation piece is an object that makes it easy for one person to involve another person.

Look at this.

Do you know what this is?

Have you ever seen anything like it?

What do you think this part does?

Those sentences describe a form of replication.

The object recruits new receivers.

Call this social transmissibility:

Tₛ = expected number of new observers recruited by one observer’s encounter

This is not meant as a literal historical estimate for Voynich. It gives us a way to distinguish objects that are socially inert from those that naturally branch into discussion.

Voynich’s modern Tₛ is obviously high.

The final branch question is whether high social transmissibility could ever have been intentionally designed into an earlier object—or whether it is entirely a product of modern context.

The Fifth Test: Identity Without Decoding

An heirloom can retain identity even when its original practical code is lost.

The family may not know how an antique instrument worked.

They still know which object it is.

This suggests a distinction between:

semantic identity — what the internal symbols mean

and

object identity — the continuity of this particular artefact through custody and time.

The second can survive without the first.

That matters because manuscript history can sometimes be reconstructed through material and custodial evidence even when textual meaning remains unresolved.

We should not let the absence of semantic identity erase all other identity channels.

The Sixth Test: Recontextualisation

Move an object to a new room and its apparent meaning changes.

A ritual object in a church is one thing.

The same object in a museum case becomes art history, anthropology, conservation and heritage.

A workshop notebook in a private chest is one thing.

The same notebook in a rare-book library becomes scholarship.

The physical object may be unchanged while the receiver, institution and action boundary change completely.

This is custodial recontextualisation.

For Voynich, every modern digitisation, transcription and online discussion creates another representation layer. These layers massively expand access but also alter the experience. A digital scan suppresses weight, smell, handling resistance, physical scale and some foldout choreography while increasing zoom, comparison, distribution and computational analysis.

The “Voynich” studied by a computer scientist is therefore partly a projection produced by digital custody.

The Seventh Test: Afterlife Function

We can now define a clean variable:

A(t) = function acquired by the object at historical time t

This creates an object-function timeline rather than a single timeless purpose.

The critical research move is to stop importing A(now) into P₀.

Voynich is a mystery object now.

That does not mean it was a mystery object then.

Voynich is a famous research object now.

That does not mean it was created for scholars six centuries later.

Voynich is a digital object now.

That does not make digital affordances evidence of original use.

This sounds obvious.

It is one of the easiest errors to make.

The Eighth Test: Story Versus Structure

Conversation pieces produce stories faster than they produce measurements.

That is why this tangent is dangerous.

A beautiful ownership story can feel explanatory even when it predicts nothing about the manuscript’s internal organisation.

So every story must face a structural return test:

  • Does the story predict a material feature?
  • Does it predict an access pattern?
  • Does it predict a receiver class?
  • Does it predict a production constraint?
  • Does it predict something not used to invent the story?

If not, the story may remain historically interesting but cannot climb the evidence ladder.

Where the Heirloom Model Fails

We do not have a continuous family tradition explaining the manuscript’s original role.

We do not know that it was intentionally passed down as an heirloom.

We do not know that its early owners valued its mystery.

We do know that later receivers have repeatedly recontextualised it.

Therefore the literal heirloom hypothesis is unsupported, while object-biography analysis remains valid.

Metaphor Removal

Delete heirloom.

Delete conversation piece.

Delete family story.

What survives?

  • original function versus acquired function;
  • functional persistence;
  • story attachment sites;
  • narrative provenance;
  • social transmissibility;
  • semantic identity versus object identity;
  • custodial recontextualisation;
  • afterlife-function timeline;
  • story-to-structure return tests.

The Doorway to the Final Experiment

We are now ready for the question that would have been too dangerous at the beginning of this branch.

The modern Voynich Manuscript undeniably fascinates.

That fascination may be entirely accidental—a historical afterlife produced by lost context.

Or some design features that sustain fascination today may once have served other functions: memory, exclusivity, demonstration, specialised use, display, relationship, prestige or instruction.

But there is one remaining possibility we have deliberately refused to test until now.

Could fascination itself ever have been part of the intended function?

Not necessarily the whole function.

Not necessarily deception.

Not necessarily a hoax.

Simply an object built so that people would want to look again.

That is the final object-world experiment.
