Thesis: Familiarity reduces cognitive friction. That is useful in ordinary life and dangerous in an unidentified manuscript. A label repeated often enough can stop feeling like a hypothesis and begin feeling like part of the object.
Tangential Voynich therefore treats familiarity as a possible contaminant—not because familiar interpretations are necessarily wrong, but because they are unusually difficult to see as interpretations once they become normal.
The Hypothesis That Disappears Into the Background
Open a standard description of the Voynich Manuscript and familiar section names quickly appear.
Herbal. Astronomical. Astrological. Biological. Balneological. Pharmaceutical. Recipes.
These labels are useful. They let researchers point to page populations without repeating long descriptions.
But usefulness changes cognition.
After enough repetition, “herbal” no longer sounds like “pages containing drawings that resemble plant forms.” It sounds like a fact about content.
“Astronomical” stops sounding like “circular diagrams containing star-like forms.” It begins sounding like a semantic identification.
The shorthand hardens.
DESCRIPTIVE CONVENIENCE → REPEATED LABEL → NORMALISED CATEGORY → UNQUESTIONED PRIOR
Normalisation Is a Cognitive Efficiency
We should not treat this as a moral failure.
Brains normalise because constantly rebuilding every concept from first principles would be impossibly expensive.
A skilled driver no longer consciously reasons about every steering correction. A reader no longer inspects the shape of every letter. A teacher recognises common misconceptions rapidly. An expert sees a familiar pattern as a chunk.
Expertise is partly the art of turning expensive thought into cheap recognition.
The problem appears when the compressed recognition is wrong for a new object.
Normalcy Blindness
eduKate’s Normalcy Blindness work names a related failure: familiar phenomena become cognitively backgrounded. The mind stops allocating interrogation to what feels ordinary.
For Voynich, that means the most dangerous assumptions may be the ones nobody experiences as assumptions anymore.
- Spaces are word boundaries.
- Rows are lines of text.
- Repeated strings are words.
- Plant-like drawings are botanical objects.
- Stars mean astronomy.
- Naked figures in liquid mean bathing.
- Small jars mean pharmacy.
- Large circular foldouts are maps or cosmologies.
Every item may eventually prove useful or partly correct.
The methodological demand is simply that we recover their status as hypotheses.
Familiarity Changes What We Notice
A botanical observer notices venation, branching, root morphology, attachment and reproductive structures.
A cryptographer notices frequency, repetition, positional constraints and transformation.
A codicologist notices bifolios, stubs, quire construction, foldouts and physical sequence.
Those differences are valuable.
But once one receiver frame dominates, features outside that frame receive less attention.
This is cognitive contamination by search-space narrowing.
The Confirmation Loop
Familiarity can create a self-reinforcing loop.
INITIAL RESEMBLANCE → CATEGORY → CATEGORY-GUIDED ATTENTION → CATEGORY-COMPATIBLE OBSERVATIONS → STRONGER CATEGORY CONFIDENCE
The loop does not require dishonesty. Every step can feel reasonable.
That is why the loop is dangerous.
The observer may become more certain because the hypothesis has reorganised the evidence field around itself.
Why the Closest Comparator Can Be the Hardest Control
Historical comparators are indispensable. Voynich must be studied beside fifteenth-century manuscripts, medical books, herbals, astronomical diagrams, recipe collections, almanacs, foldouts and professional texts.
But the closer a comparator is to our preferred theory, the easier it becomes to collect similarities and ignore mismatches.
This is why matched controls matter. Padua must be compared with Venice, Prague, Vienna and other plausible knowledge environments. Herbal comparisons need non-herbal technical books with similar page architectures. Astronomical diagrams need circular diagrams from non-astronomical systems.
Similarity becomes evidence only after alternatives have had a fair chance to produce the same similarity.
Tangential Distance as Decontamination
A distant system can be useful precisely because it is implausible as provenance.
No responsible reader will conclude that a fifteenth-century manuscript originated in a modern MRT control room.
That allows the railway model to ask questions about routing, terminals, bottlenecks and state transitions without carrying the seductive historical plausibility of a medical or botanical analogy.
Distance creates cognitive quarantine.
The absurdity protects the experiment.
Break the Label, Keep the Measurement
The Tangential protocol attacks familiarity by forcing every useful observation through neutral restatement.
“Root” becomes a branching component below an axial form.
“Word” becomes a blank-delimited graphical token.
“Recipe” becomes a sequence of short paragraphs with recurring local forms.
“Astronomical wheel” becomes a circular diagram with radial segmentation and star-like marks.
The neutral description may feel clumsy.
That clumsiness is valuable. It restores the friction that familiarity removed.
Familiarity Has to Earn Its Way Back
We do not permanently ban plant, star, medicine or word.
We temporarily remove them.
Then we ask whether the familiar category can return through prediction.
If a plant hypothesis is real, it should predict coherent morphological correspondences better than hostile controls. If an astronomical interpretation is real, quantitative relations should survive comparison with known diagrams. If blank-delimited strings are words, linguistic models should outperform plausible alternative segmentations.
The category comes back stronger because it returned through evidence rather than habit.
The Familiarity Audit
- Which words in the claim describe observation and which describe interpretation?
- How long has the interpretation been repeated?
- Would a novice independently choose the same category?
- What features become invisible after adopting the category?
- Which hostile alternatives can explain the same resemblance?
- Can the observation be rewritten without the familiar label?
- Does the category make a prediction that neutral geometry or statistics alone do not?
- What would force us to stop using the label?

Familiarity is not the enemy.
Unexamined familiarity is.
The Voynich Manuscript has been looked at for generations. That means some interpretive grooves are now very deep.
Tangential Voynich deliberately climbs out of them.
Not to prove that the old roads are wrong.
To look at the landscape before deciding which road should be trusted.
When a label feels obvious, Tangential Voynich asks when we last tested the obviousness.
That is how familiarity stops being contamination and becomes evidence again.
