Income varies between households, but geography asks another question: where are those differences concentrated, and what happens when schools, jobs, parks, transport, pollution, housing quality, heat and healthcare are also distributed unevenly?
Spatial inequality is the uneven distribution of resources, opportunities, services, risks and outcomes across places.
Inequality becomes geographical when where you are changes what you can reach, afford, avoid or become.

1. Geography Does Not Assume Space Is Neutral
People do not begin from identical locations. One household may live beside rapid transit, schools and parks. Another may live near pollution, long commutes and poor service coverage. Spatial structure affects daily opportunity.
2. Access Is One Major Mechanism
Jobs, healthcare, education and amenities create benefits only when people can reach and use them. This is why accessibility sits beneath many forms of spatial inequality.
3. Land Markets Sort Activities and People
High-demand locations often become expensive. Households and firms sort according to income, preferences, regulation and availability. This can produce clusters of wealth, disadvantage, industry, education or services.
4. Infrastructure Can Reduce or Reinforce Inequality
A new transit line can widen access to jobs. A highway can connect a region while dividing a neighbourhood. Drainage can reduce flood exposure. Digital infrastructure can widen educational and economic opportunity. The geography of infrastructure is therefore distributive.
5. Environmental Quality Is Uneven Too
Heat, noise, air pollution, flood risk and green space are not evenly distributed. Environmental inequality appears when some groups experience greater exposure to hazards or weaker access to environmental benefits.
6. Historical Decisions Remain in the Map
Old transport lines, industrial zoning, housing policies, segregation, land ownership and colonial planning can continue shaping present-day spatial patterns long after the original decision-makers are gone.
7. Spatial Inequality Can Reproduce Itself
Strong schools and transport can raise demand for a neighbourhood. Rising demand can raise prices. Higher prices change who can enter. Wealth concentration can support better services, while disadvantaged areas may struggle to attract investment. Feedback can make geography persistent.
8. But Persistence Is Not Destiny
Public housing, transport investment, service provision, planning, taxation, environmental regulation and digital infrastructure can alter the spatial distribution of opportunity. Geography studies both the inherited pattern and the mechanisms capable of changing it.
9. National Averages Can Hide Local Worlds
A country can have strong average income, healthcare or internet access while particular districts remain underserved. Scale matters because aggregation can make inequality disappear statistically while it remains vivid on the ground.
10. The Same Place Can Contain Several Inequalities
Transport disadvantage can overlap with heat exposure, housing cost, school access and health risk. When several disadvantages coincide spatially, the effect can become cumulative.
11. Primary Geography: Compare What Is Nearby
Children can compare two neighbourhoods: parks, crossings, buses, shops, shade and public facilities. The exercise introduces fairness without turning Geography into moral slogans. The evidence remains spatial.
12. Secondary Geography: Map Access and Exposure
Students can examine whether populations with different needs have equal travel times to services or equal exposure to hazards. Maps become tools for asking distributive questions.
13. Advanced Geography: Measure Carefully
Spatial inequality can be analysed through accessibility measures, segregation indices, concentration measures, local statistics and multiscale comparisons. But each metric defines inequality differently, so the measurement choice must remain visible.
14. Singapore Example: Transit and Opportunity
Singapore’s dense transport system changes the relationship between residential location and access to jobs, schools and services. Yet accessibility is still uneven by route, transfer, walking environment, time of day and user capability. Good geography examines those differences rather than assuming island-wide connectivity makes every location equivalent.
15. Heat Example
Tree cover, building form, traffic, materials and ventilation can make some urban spaces hotter than others. If vulnerable populations are concentrated in hotter locations, a physical pattern becomes a social geography of risk.
16. Housing Example
Housing location affects commuting, school access, neighbourhood services and exposure. Housing inequality is therefore not only about the dwelling itself. It is also about the bundle of geographical relationships attached to the address.
17. Rural–Urban Example
Lower population density can raise the cost of providing hospitals, schools and transport. Rural disadvantage does not mean rural places are inherently deficient; it means service systems face different spatial economics.
18. Digital Example
Broadband coverage, device ownership, affordability and digital literacy can vary geographically. Online systems can reduce some location-based inequality while creating a new penalty for those with weak digital access.
19. Spatial Inequality Can Cross Borders
Global production can concentrate environmental costs in one region while consumers elsewhere receive the benefits. Spatial inequality therefore operates between as well as within countries.
20. Hostile Test: “Everyone Has the Same Facility, So the System Is Equal”
Equal facility counts do not guarantee equal access. Travel time, capacity, quality, affordability and population need can differ. Geography asks whether the distribution actually equalises usable opportunity.

- Facility-count fallacy: equal numbers are treated as equal access.
- Single-variable thinking: inequality is reduced to income alone.
