How Painting Works | Imagination — Painting What Has Never Existed

No one has ever seen a dragon.

Yet a painter can make one feel heavy.

Give it wings with believable joints.

Skin that catches light.

Feet that compress under weight.

Smoke affected by wind.

A shadow attached to the ground.

Suddenly the impossible creature begins borrowing credibility from the possible world.

Imagination in painting is not the opposite of observation.

It often works by reorganising observation so aggressively that something new appears.
