Guessing Idiom Meanings Before Feedback: When Successful Inference Helps Vocabulary Memory—and When It Does Not
Guessing can help vocabulary learning—but only if the learner does not confuse effort with accuracy.
Idioms make this problem unusually clear. A phrase such as toe the line cannot be interpreted safely by adding together the ordinary meanings of toe and line. Cambridge Dictionary defines an idiom as a fixed group of words whose meaning as a unit differs from the meanings of the individual words. Context may help. It may also tempt the learner toward a plausible but wrong interpretation.
A 2025 Language Learning study by Frank Boers, Xi Yu and Xiaofei Wang compared two ways of learning English idioms. Some learners were asked to infer each idiom’s meaning from a short context before receiving the correct meaning. Others were given the meaning directly. One week later, the inferencing condition showed an advantage when the initial inference had been successful.

The Mechanism: Generation Before Confirmation
When a learner tries to infer a meaning, the brain has to inspect clues, reject alternatives and generate a candidate interpretation. That effort can create a richer memory trace than passively reading a supplied definition. But the advantage depends on what is generated.
If the inference is broadly correct, the learner has already built a route from context to meaning before feedback confirms it. If the inference is badly wrong, the learner has generated an incorrect candidate that must now be repaired. Feedback therefore is not an optional answer key. It is part of the learning event.
What the 2025 Study Found
Fifty-six ESL learners studied 21 English idioms. In the inferencing condition, learners saw an idiom in a short context and attempted to infer its meaning. They then received the correct meaning as feedback. The comparison group received meanings directly. A later meaning-recall task again supplied corrective feedback, and a post-test followed one week later.
The important result was conditional: prompting inference was beneficial relative to simply giving the meaning when the learner’s inference was successful. The finding does not support a crude rule that “guessing is always better”. It supports a more careful rule: productive inference plus verification can strengthen learning.

A Four-Step Inference Routine
- Read beyond the phrase. One sentence is often not enough. Look at cause, consequence, attitude and topic.
- Generate a provisional meaning. State it in plain English, not another idiom.
- Verify immediately. Check a reliable dictionary, teacher explanation or supplied feedback.
- Repair the memory. If the guess was wrong, explain exactly which clue misled you and write one new example with the correct meaning.
Why Idioms Are Harder Than Ordinary Unknown Words
An unfamiliar ordinary word may be partly constrained by grammar and surrounding meaning. Idioms add another difficulty: the phrase can contain familiar words whose literal meanings point in the wrong direction. This creates a false sense of access. The learner thinks, “I know every word here,” while the phrase as a unit remains unknown.
That is why idiom learning needs a unit test. Ask whether the phrase keeps its literal compositional meaning. If not, store the expression as a conventional unit while still learning its grammar and typical contexts.
Concrete Examples
“The ball is in your court.” Context may show that responsibility for the next decision has shifted. The useful learner definition is not “there is a ball near you”, but “the next move or decision is now yours”.
“Bite off more than you can chew.” A literal image is available, but the idiomatic meaning concerns attempting more than one can reasonably manage.
“Toe the line.” A learner may guess “begin a race” from the physical image. Verification shows that the conventional meaning concerns following rules or accepted standards.

The key transfer is not to force idioms into formal writing.
