Textual Input Enhancement for Vocabulary Learning | Why Bold, Highlighted and Visually Salient Words Attract Attention—but Do Not Automatically Teach Meaning
A word can be made impossible to miss and still fail to become part of a student’s usable vocabulary.
Teachers do it instinctively. A new term is printed in bold. A key phrase is highlighted. A difficult word appears in a coloured box, a caption, a slide or a digital annotation. The hope is sensible: if the word stands out, the learner is more likely to notice it.
In language teaching, this family of techniques is often discussed as textual input enhancement: making selected language visually more salient so that attention is drawn towards it. The mechanism matters because vocabulary learning begins with attention, but does not end there. A learner can notice the shape of a word without learning its meaning, notice its meaning without learning its pronunciation, or recognise it during reading without being able to retrieve it later in writing.
The practical question is therefore not, “Should we highlight vocabulary?” It is: what learning job is the highlighting doing, and what must happen after the word has been noticed?

The Core Mechanism: Salience Changes What Competes for Attention
A normal paragraph contains many signals at once: ideas, grammar, punctuation, examples, unfamiliar words and background information. A learner with limited attention may understand the broad message while barely registering a target word. Making that word visually distinctive changes the competition. Bold type, underlining, colour or another typographical cue can tell the eye, “this item matters”.
That is useful, but modest. Visual salience is an attention intervention. It is not automatically a meaning intervention, a memory intervention or a production intervention.
The word mitigate may be easy to notice in a paragraph and still be difficult to define, distinguish from prevent, pronounce, collocate naturally, or retrieve in an essay a week later.
This is the first important distinction. A teaching technique should be judged by the level of knowledge it actually changes.
Noticing Is the Doorway, Not the House
Vocabulary knowledge has several dimensions. A learner may need to know a word’s written form, spoken form, core meaning, additional senses, grammar, typical word partners, register and appropriate contexts of use. A visual cue can help the first encounter become visible, but the rest must still be built.
- Visibility: Did the learner notice the target word?
- Form: Can the learner recognise or reproduce its spelling and sound?
- Meaning: Can the learner explain what it means in this context?
- Distinction: Can the learner separate it from nearby words?
- Connection: Does the learner know its usual collocations, grammatical pattern or subject context?
- Retrieval: Can the learner recall it without seeing it?
- Use: Can the learner choose it appropriately in a new sentence or task?
A useful lesson therefore treats enhancement as the first movement in a sequence rather than the whole sequence.
What Current Research Suggests
Research on typographical enhancement gives a useful warning against overclaiming. One study of word frequency and typographical enhancement found that bolding target vocabulary supported immediate recognition of word form, while effects on meaning were much less straightforward. Repeated encounters also mattered. This fits a broader pattern in vocabulary research: drawing attention to a form can help learners process it, but durable lexical knowledge usually needs richer engagement than visual prominence alone.
Other work using eye-movement measures shows why salience is plausible as an attentional mechanism: visually distinctive material changes how readers allocate processing. Research on glossing also suggests that brief meaning support attached to unfamiliar words can improve vocabulary learning, especially when learners actually consult and process the information. The lesson is not that every word should be highlighted and glossed. It is that attention and information solve different problems.
A highlighted word answers, “Which item should I attend to?” A definition or gloss answers, “What does it mean here?” A comparison answers, “How is it different from its neighbour?” Retrieval practice answers, “Can I bring it back without the page?” An application task answers, “Can I use it when the context changes?”
Three Layers: Visibility → Processing → Retrieval
1. Visibility
The learner’s attention is directed to a target form. This is where bolding, underlining, colour, font contrast or a keyword caption can help.
2. Processing
The learner does something meaningful with the word: infer its sense from context, check a definition, compare it with a neighbour, identify its word family, hear its pronunciation, inspect a corpus example, or explain why it fits the sentence.
3. Retrieval
The support is removed and the learner must bring the word back. This can happen through a short recall question, a cloze sentence, a spoken explanation, a paraphrase, a delayed quiz or later writing.
When students stop at layer one, they can mistake familiarity for knowledge. The word looks familiar because the page made it memorable as an object. That is not the same as having a strong lexical representation.
When Visual Enhancement Is Especially Useful
Dense subject reading. In Science, Geography or History, a student may be learning concepts and vocabulary simultaneously. Carefully marking a small set of load-bearing terms can prevent them from disappearing inside the content.
First encounters with a word family. If analyse, analysis, analytical and analytically occur across a text, a consistent cue can help learners notice that the forms belong together before examining their grammatical jobs.
Collocations and multiword units. Highlighting only the rare word can be less useful than marking the whole partnership. A learner studying pose a threat needs to notice that the lexical unit is not simply threat.
Listening with captions. Visual support can help connect an unfamiliar spoken form to a written form, particularly when the target item would otherwise pass too quickly in speech.
Error repair. When a student repeatedly misreads or skips a particular form, enhancement can temporarily make the relevant feature visible while the correct representation is rebuilt.
When Highlighting Becomes Noise
The most common design failure is to make everything important. If half a page is bold, underlined and coloured, nothing is truly salient. The learner now has visual clutter rather than a clear attentional signal.
A second failure is to highlight a term without making its learning job clear. A student sees consequence in yellow, but is never asked whether it means a result, a punishment, or something else in the passage. The colour has increased visual prominence without resolving semantic precision.
A third failure is permanence. If every later encounter remains highlighted, the learner may never need to recognise the word under ordinary reading conditions. Support should often fade as knowledge improves.
Diagnosis Before Prescription
“The student keeps missing important vocabulary in long passages.”
Diagnosis: the first problem may be attention or perceptual competition rather than lack of intelligence or effort.
Prescription: enhance a small number of genuinely load-bearing words, then ask the learner to explain why each matters to the passage.
“The student recognises every highlighted word but cannot explain it.”
Diagnosis: visual familiarity has been mistaken for semantic knowledge.
Prescription: remove the highlighting and require a definition, contrast, example, paraphrase or context decision.
“The student knows the definition but never uses the word.”
Diagnosis: the bottleneck is productive retrieval or usage knowledge, not noticing.
Prescription: practise sentence completion, collocation retrieval, short speaking turns and delayed writing without visible prompts.
“The student confuses several highlighted words.”
Diagnosis: salience has made the words visible but not discriminable.
Prescription: compare the words by features, contexts, collocations and non-examples rather than highlighting them more strongly.
A Practical Five-Step Routine
- Select: mark only the small set of words that carry the lesson’s main lexical job.
- Notice: ask students to locate the word in the sentence and say what clues surround it.
- Resolve: establish the relevant meaning, pronunciation, word family or collocation.
- Retrieve: hide the support and ask for the word or meaning again.
- Transfer: meet the same item later in an unmarked text, another subject or a new writing task.
This sequence keeps the visual cue in its proper place. It helps attention, then gets out of the way.
Singapore and Subject Transfer
Singapore students often read across subjects in English. The same learner may move from an English comprehension passage to a Science explanation, a Geography case study and a History source-based question in one day. Visual enhancement can be particularly useful when a subject teacher wants to make disciplinary language visible without turning the lesson into a separate vocabulary list.
Consider significant. In everyday English it may mean important. In some statistical contexts it has a technical interpretation tied to a test and threshold. Highlighting the term can draw attention to it, but the real teaching work is to establish which meaning is operating and what evidence licenses that meaning. This is why vocabulary learning and subject learning cannot always be separated.
AI, Digital Reading and Highlighting
AI systems and reading apps can identify candidate vocabulary, colour-code text or generate glosses quickly. That can reduce preparation time, but the same principle applies: automatic highlighting is only useful if the selected items match the learner’s actual needs.
A useful digital workflow is to let the tool propose targets, then have the human check three things: Is this word genuinely important to the passage? Is the learner likely not to know the relevant sense? Is there a meaningful follow-up task? If the answer to all three is no, visual enhancement may simply create more visual traffic.
