There is a wonderfully tempting solution to an unreadable manuscript.
Perhaps the problem is not the writing we can see.
Perhaps another book is hiding underneath it.
A lost text.
Scraped away.
Washed.
Written over.
Waiting for ultraviolet light, multispectral imaging or some future instrument to recover it.
Medieval manuscripts genuinely can behave this way.
Parchment was valuable.
Old writing could be removed and the skin reused.
Such a reused manuscript is called a palimpsest.
Some of the most celebrated manuscript discoveries in modern scholarship have come from recovering erased undertext.
So the question is entirely legitimate:
Was the Voynich Manuscript written on parchment that had already carried another text?
Current physical evidence says no.
Microscopic examination did not find signs that an earlier manuscript had been erased from the calfskin before Voynich was written.
Multispectral imaging conducted in 2014 likewise did not reveal a hidden earlier text beneath the principal manuscript.
That is a strong negative result.
But there is a subtle complication.
The Voynich Manuscript does contain faded, erased and difficult-to-see writing from later stages of its life.
On f1r, for example, modern imaging helps recover later ownership and decipherment-related marks, including the faded Tepenec inscription and a table now associated with Johannes Marcus Marci with reasonable confidence.
Those erasures are real.
They do not make the Voynich Manuscript a palimpsest.
Later writing erased from Voynich is not the same thing as an earlier manuscript erased before Voynich.
That distinction is the entire article.
And it matters because once those two histories are separated, several popular theories become much easier to evaluate.

One-sentence answer: current microscopy and multispectral examination give no evidence that the Voynich calfskin previously carried an erased manuscript, so the codex is not supported as a palimpsest; however, later annotations on the already completed Voynich Manuscript were faded or erased in places, especially on f1r, and those later layers can be recovered more clearly with modern imaging.

The scientific result is unusually clear by Voynich standards.
The mystery is written on old parchment.
It is not currently hiding another erased book underneath.
What Is a Palimpsest?
Parchment is not paper.
It is processed animal skin.
It is durable.
Expensive.
And, under some conditions, reusable.
A scribe or manuscript workshop could remove existing ink by scraping the surface, washing it, or combining mechanical and chemical techniques.
The cleaned skin could then receive a new text.
The earlier writing might disappear in normal light while leaving microscopic, chemical or spectral traces.
That reused page is a palimpsest.
The important chronology is:
- First text is written.
- First text is removed.
- Second text is written on the reused parchment.
If the second text is Voynich, then a true Voynich palimpsest requires evidence for Step 1 and Step 2 before the surviving Voynich writing was produced.
That order is what later erased annotations fail to satisfy.
Why the Idea Is So Attractive
Palimpsest theories offer several emotional rewards at once.
They provide a hidden layer.
A lost history.
A scientific instrument that might suddenly reveal ordinary readable writing.
And an explanation for why the parchment may be older than some proposed writing date.
The idea is also historically plausible in the abstract.
Medieval parchment really was reused.
But plausibility of a practice is not evidence that this particular object underwent it.
The Voynich question has to be answered from the skin itself.
What Would We Expect to See?
An erased earlier manuscript can leave several kinds of trace.
- ghost strokes;
- scraping marks;
- changes in parchment surface;
- ink residues embedded deeper in the skin;
- spectral responses that differ from the later visible text;
- underlying lines crossing independently beneath the new writing;
- older ruling or layout unrelated to the visible composition.
No single trace must survive in every palimpsest.
A very thorough erasure can remove much.
But across a codex as large as Voynich, reuse of a previous written book should normally create at least some repeated physical evidence if the earlier text covered substantial portions of the same skins.
That is what examination has failed to find.
Microscopy Gives the First Strong Negative Result
Conservators and researchers examined the parchment surface directly.
The conclusion summarised in modern Voynich reference work is straightforward: the parchment shows no sign that earlier writing was erased before the surviving manuscript was produced.
This matters because the observation concerns the substrate itself.
Not the language.
Not a statistical model.
Not a proposed cipher.
The skin does not display the physical history expected from ordinary manuscript reuse.
That immediately lowers the probability of a palimpsest explanation.
Multispectral Imaging Provides an Independent Check
Normal photography records only a limited band of reflected light.
Different wavelengths can change the contrast among parchment, ink, stains, faded writing and pigment.
Multispectral imaging therefore provides a second route to hidden marks.
Selected Voynich folios were imaged multispectrally in 2014.
The results did reveal and clarify difficult later marks.
They did not reveal a manuscript-wide erased text beneath the Voynich writing.
Modern summaries therefore state the conclusion strongly: there is no evidence that the parchment had previously been written upon.
Two different observational routes—surface examination and wavelength-sensitive imaging—point the same way.
Negative Evidence Becomes Stronger When the Method Can Detect Something Else
A negative instrument result is easier to trust when the same instrument successfully reveals faint material that ordinary viewing misses.
That is exactly what happens on f1r.
Faded later inscriptions become more visible.
A character table can be recovered more clearly.
Yet no comparable older undertext appears beneath the principal Voynich writing.
This does not create metaphysical certainty that no microscopic trace could ever be found by any future method.
Science rarely needs that absolute standard.
It gives us a much more useful statement:
methods capable of recovering faded later writing have not revealed an erased pre-Voynich manuscript.
f1r Is the Page That Causes the Most Confusion
The first recto carries several historical layers.
Principal Voynich writing.
The faded ownership name of Jacobus de Tepenec.
Other difficult marks.
A faded character table.
Modern chemical staining introduced in an attempt to enhance faint writing.
This makes f1r look like a page full of ghosts.
It is.
But the ghosts are mostly from the life of the already existing Voynich Manuscript.
They are evidence of ownership, attempted reading and later intervention.
They are not currently evidence of a previous book erased before Voynich was made.
The Tepenec Inscription Is Later Than the Main Manuscript
Jacobus de Tepenec was an early-seventeenth-century owner associated with the court of Rudolf II.
His faded name on f1r belongs to the manuscript’s provenance.
If it was deliberately erased, the chronological sequence is:
- Voynich Manuscript already exists.
- Tepenec writes or receives his ownership inscription.
- The inscription later fades or is erased.
That is an erased annotation on Voynich.
Not an erased manuscript under Voynich.
The direction of time is opposite.
The Character Table on f1r Belongs to Reception History Too
The faded table on f1r is particularly fascinating because it appears to pair or organise Voynich-like characters as though someone were analysing the script.
Modern multispectral images make the columns much clearer than ordinary views.
Recent analysis associates the table with Johannes Marcus Marci, one of the known seventeenth-century owners or transmitters of the manuscript, with reasonable confidence.
If that attribution is correct, the page preserves an early decipherer at work.
That is historically important.
It is not an author’s original cipher key.
The likely historical sequence would be:
- Voynich principal manuscript exists.
- A later reader studies the script.
- The reader writes a character table.
- The table later fades or is erased.
- Multispectral imaging recovers it more clearly.
Again, later analysis erased from the page is not a pre-existing undertext.
Why the Distinction Matters for “Hidden Key” Theories
A faded character table beside Voynich writing looks exactly like the sort of thing a solver wants to find.
Perhaps it is the key.
But chronology decides whether that interpretation is plausible.
If the table was made by Marci or another later reader, it is an attempted key.
It tells us what an early modern scholar thought might help.
It does not tell us what the fifteenth-century maker encoded.
This is the same epistemic firewall used throughout the series:
later interpretation is evidence about reception, not automatic evidence about original meaning.
Modern Chemical Enhancement Complicates f1r Further
McCrone’s 2009 report notes blotchy chemical staining on f1r.
It had apparently been applied historically in an attempt to enhance faint writing.
The long-term result may have been the opposite.
Some original faint material may have been washed out or damaged.
This creates a conservation lesson.
Older manuscript scholarship sometimes altered the object in order to read it.
Modern conservation tries far harder to extract information non-destructively.
Multispectral imaging is powerful partly because it can improve visibility without adding reagent to the parchment.
Offset Is Not Undertext
Another possible source of ghost writing is physical contact.
Paint or ink can transfer from one page to another.
A reversed trace may appear on a facing leaf.
That mark lies “under” later dirt or ageing in a loose visual sense.
It is not an erased previous manuscript.
The Contact-Transfer Problem owns this class of evidence.
Transfer can reconstruct facing-page relationships.
It should not be mistaken for palimpsest undertext.
Show-Through Is Not Undertext Either
Parchment can be thin enough for marks on the other side to influence what we see.
A dark line on the verso may show through on the recto.
Digital enhancement can increase that effect.
The apparent hidden writing may simply be the visible text on the opposite side.
A serious undertext claim therefore needs registration analysis.
Does the hidden trace align exactly with known verso strokes?
If yes, it is show-through.
If no, further investigation is justified.
Stains Are Not Undertext
Parchment accumulates chemical history.
Water.
Skin oils.
Binding contact.
Old reagents.
Pigment transfer.
Biological damage.
Under multispectral imaging, these can create contrast patterns that look suggestively intentional.
A real hidden-writing claim should resolve into repeated stroke structures with handwriting-like geometry.
Not merely darker patches.
Underdrawing Is Not Undertext
Illustrated manuscripts can preserve sketch lines beneath final outlines or paint.
Those preliminary marks are part of the same production process.
If imaging reveals a plant outline beneath colour, that is not evidence of a reused manuscript.
It is evidence about drawing sequence.
The Order of Making owns that relationship.
Palimpsest claims require an older independent writing event, not merely an earlier stage of the same page design.
Erasure Inside the Principal Writing Would Not Automatically Make a Palimpsest
A scribe can correct a word.
Scrape one glyph.
Overwrite it.
That is an emendation.
It does not mean the entire parchment was reused from another work.

One erased word is local revision.
A palimpsest is substrate reuse.
Scale and chronology matter.
Could One Voynich Leaf Still Be Reused Even If the Codex Is Not?
This is the more difficult residual question.
A manuscript-wide negative result does not logically prove that no tiny fragment on any folio could ever preserve an isolated earlier mark.
Parchment workshops can reuse scraps.
A single leaf could have an unusual history.
But extraordinary local claims need local physical evidence.
At present there is no established Voynich folio recognised as carrying an erased pre-Voynich text.
Therefore the correct hierarchy is:
- manuscript-wide palimpsest: unsupported;
- known specific palimpsest leaf: unsupported;
- later erased annotations: supported;
- local principal corrections: supported in small number;
- offset/show-through/stains: physically present in various forms.
The Palimpsest Question and Radiocarbon Dating
Radiocarbon dating measures when the animal supplying the parchment lived.
A palimpsest can therefore create a real dating complication in other manuscripts.
The parchment may be older than the visible upper text by decades or centuries.
This is one reason some people raise the possibility for Voynich.
But the absence of erased undertext removes one major mechanism by which a very old skin might have remained culturally active before reuse.
It does not prove the principal Voynich writing was added immediately after parchment manufacture.
Unused parchment could in principle be stored.
Conservators consider long storage less likely than relatively prompt use, but radiocarbon still dates the skin rather than the ink event.
Not being a palimpsest narrows one route to a large age gap.
It does not independently date the writing.
The Palimpsest Question and the Modern-Forgery Theory
A hypothetical modern forger could obtain old blank parchment.
Or old parchment with writing and erase it.
The second scenario would tend to create palimpsest evidence.
Voynich does not show that evidence.
The first scenario—acquiring a large supply of coherent early-fifteenth-century blank calfskin, using historically compatible materials, producing complex codicological wear and then establishing a pre-Voynich ownership trail—is theoretically possible but increasingly uneconomical.
That is why current expert opinion strongly favours the manuscript as a genuine early-fifteenth-century material production rather than a modern fake.
The palimpsest result is one piece of that cumulative case.
The Palimpsest Question and the Exemplar Problem
No undertext does not mean no predecessor.
This distinction is essential.
The surviving Voynich Manuscript may have been copied from another text or set of drafts.
Those exemplars could be lost.
They do not have to survive physically on the same parchment.
The Exemplar Problem owns that question.
A non-palimpsest manuscript can still be a copy.
A fair copy can be written on fresh skin from a messy draft on paper or parchment elsewhere.
So the absence of undertext tells us about substrate history, not intellectual originality.
The Palimpsest Question and the Almost-Correctionless Text
The clean principal writing sometimes encourages a different fantasy.
Perhaps the real draft was written underneath and then erased, leaving the final version above.
Physical evidence does not support that workflow on the surviving parchment.
If a draft existed, it was more likely on another surface or in another stage not preserved as a manuscript-wide underlayer.
This makes the clean-copy hypothesis more specific.
Prepared information may have preceded the final writing.
It simply was not erased from the same skins on which the surviving text now sits.
Why Multispectral Imaging Is Not a Magic Decipherment Machine
Multispectral imaging is sometimes discussed as though one more wavelength might finally reveal English beneath Voynichese.
That misunderstands what the technology does.
It changes visibility.
It does not change semantics.
If a faded Latin note exists, imaging can help us see it.
If an unknown Voynich glyph becomes clearer, imaging can help us transcribe it accurately.
But if the principal script is genuinely the only text on the skin and remains undeciphered, enhanced contrast cannot substitute for a language or cipher model.
Better pixels reduce observational uncertainty.
They do not guarantee semantic recovery.
A Future Imaging Upgrade Could Still Matter Enormously
Rejecting the palimpsest hypothesis does not reduce the value of new imaging.
Quite the opposite.
Higher spatial resolution and improved spectral analysis can still help:
- separate weak strokes from stains;
- clarify rare glyphs;
- recover later marginalia;
- distinguish ink batches locally;
- map faded pigments;
- identify offsets;
- improve correction analysis;
- reconstruct binding and contact history.
Those questions are valuable precisely because they are grounded in traces the object actually contains.
What Survives the Palimpsest Work
- The Voynich Manuscript is written on early-fifteenth-century calf parchment.
- Parchment was historically reusable and palimpsests are real medieval objects.
- Direct physical examination did not reveal evidence of erased earlier writing beneath Voynich.
- 2014 multispectral examination likewise did not reveal a pre-existing erased manuscript.
- Current evidence therefore supports fresh/unwritten parchment at the beginning of the surviving Voynich production sequence.
- Later faded or erased writing does exist on the completed manuscript.
- The Tepenec ownership inscription is one such later historical layer.
- The f1r character table is another later analytical/reception layer and has been associated with Johannes Marcus Marci with reasonable confidence.
- Modern chemical enhancement of f1r complicates preservation and visibility.

A Better Hidden-Writing Analysis
- Identify which side of the parchment a faint trace belongs to.
- Register the verso to exclude show-through.
- Compare facing pages to exclude offset transfer.
- Separate drawing underlayers from textual undertext.
- Map stains and conservation interventions.
- Determine whether the trace crosses beneath principal Voynich strokes.
- Ask whether its handwriting belongs to a later known hand.
- Require repeated character-like structures before calling a spectral patch text.
- Use multiple wavelength bands and, where appropriate, independent analytical methods.
- Keep local erasure claims local unless evidence generalises.
- Do not infer semantic content from enhancement alone.
What Would Count as a Real Palimpsest Breakthrough?
Imagine future non-invasive imaging finds faint lines crossing beneath principal Voynich writing on several folios.
The traces do not register to the opposite sides.
They do not match facing-page offsets.
Microscopy reveals abrasion associated with their removal.
The traces form a consistent older script unrelated to Voynichese.
That older script continues across physical bifolia in a layout incompatible with the visible manuscript.
Now the palimpsest conclusion would become unavoidable.
The current evidence is the opposite.
No such undertext has been detected.
A real palimpsest discovery would require an older independent writing system physically beneath Voynich—not merely a faint mark that becomes more visible when the image is processed.
Primary School: Before and After
Write a pencil sentence on paper.
Erase it.
Write a new sentence over the same place.
Now tilt the paper toward the light.
Parts of the older writing may remain visible.
This is the basic idea of a palimpsest.
Then add a note after the second sentence and erase that note.
The child can immediately see the chronological difference:
- erased before the main text;
- erased after the main text.
Lower Secondary: Classify the Ghost
Give students five examples:
- undertext;
- show-through;
- offset;
- stain;
- later erased annotation.
Ask what observation would distinguish each.
The exercise teaches that “hidden mark” is not one evidence category.
Upper Secondary: Build the Timeline
Give students a page with simulated layers.
One faint text lies under the main text.
One annotation lies over it.
One stain crosses everything.
Ask them to reconstruct relative chronology from overlaps.
This is stratigraphy applied to manuscripts.
The same principle separates a true palimpsest from later Voynich marginalia.
JC and Adult Readers: Hidden Writing as a Classification Problem
At a higher level, spectral anomalies should be classified under competing physical hypotheses.
- pre-existing undertext;
- same-side later writing;
- opposite-side show-through;
- facing-page offset;
- pigment underdrawing;
- chemical stain;
- surface damage.
Each hypothesis predicts different registration, stroke geometry, layer order and wavelength response.
The strongest identification is the one that explains those physical variables together rather than the one whose processed image most resembles familiar letters.
A Parent and Teacher Guide
- Define palimpsest chronologically, not visually.
- Separate writing erased before Voynich from writing erased after Voynich.
- Use microscopy and imaging as evidence about layers, not meaning.
- Exclude show-through and offset before calling something undertext.
- Keep f1r later annotations in reception history.
- Do not turn Marci’s likely table into an original cipher key.
- Remember that no palimpsest does not mean no lost exemplar.
- Let negative evidence close hypotheses when the object genuinely refuses them.
The transferable lesson is:
not every hidden mark belongs to a hidden earlier world; chronology is what turns a faint trace into evidence.

The parchment itself currently says something simpler.
Before the drawings.

Voynich is difficult because of what was written on it—not because another erased manuscript is currently waiting underneath to explain it for us.
