A provenance chain tells us who held the manuscript. A handoff analysis asks what state of the manuscript each person actually received.
Research thesis: The modern custody of the Voynich Manuscript is comparatively well documented from 1912 onward. But a sequence of known owners is not the same thing as a sequence of known knowledge transfers. The physical codex can pass cleanly from one custodian to another while its purpose, reading protocol, inherited explanation or uncertainty state changes—or fails to cross at all. This article reconstructs the route from Frascati to New Haven as a chain of handoffs rather than a list of names.

The Route in One Line
Jesuit College at Frascati → Wilfrid M. Voynich, 1912 → Ethel Lilian Voynich → Anne Nill → H. P. Kraus, 1961 → Beinecke Library, Yale, 1969 → present institutional custody
Yale’s current official account gives this modern provenance explicitly. Wilfrid Voynich purchased the manuscript from the Jesuit College at Frascati near Rome in 1912. After his death it passed to his wife Ethel, who willed it to their friend and assistant Anne Nill. Nill sold it to New York rare-book dealer H. P. Kraus in 1961. As provenance, that chain is unusually useful.
As a reconstruction of knowledge continuity, it is incomplete.
We know much more confidently that the manuscript crossed these edges than we know what understanding crossed with it.
Ownership History and Handoff History Are Different Objects
A conventional ownership chain records nodes:
A → B → C → D
The handoff programme focuses on the arrows.
A ──H₁──▶ B ──H₂──▶ C ──H₃──▶ D
For each handoff \(H\), ask separately:
- Did the physical object cross?
- Do we know the sender and receiver?
- Do we know why the transfer happened?
- Did a title or attribution cross?
- Did a provenance story cross?
- Did an operating or reading protocol cross?
- Did associated papers cross?
- Did uncertainty cross?
- Did the receiver demonstrably use the manuscript?
- Did the next receiver inherit the same understanding?
The modern chain is strong on the first two questions.
It becomes progressively weaker when we ask about the full receiver state.
A Benchmark Handoff: Marci to Kircher, 1666
Before beginning in Frascati, it is useful to look at an earlier transfer because it shows what a richer historical handoff can preserve.
In 1666 Johannes Marcus Marci sent the manuscript to the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher. A letter accompanying that transfer survives with the manuscript. The letter is exceptionally valuable because it does something a bare ownership entry cannot do: it carries a piece of the sender’s model of the object into the receiver’s world.
The letter does not solve the manuscript. Some information within the broader provenance tradition is uncertain or speculative. But the existence of the accompanying document demonstrates the difference between:
OBJECT TRANSFER
and:
OBJECT TRANSFER + EXPLICIT RECEIVER MESSAGE
The 1666 edge therefore becomes a benchmark for later custody analysis. When a document, catalogue description, letter, inventory or research packet survives alongside the object, we can ask not only where the manuscript went but which interpretation travelled with it.
A handoff is historically richer when the message about the object survives with the object.
Frascati, 1912: The Manuscript Re-enters the Public Research River
Yale identifies 1912 as the point at which Wilfrid M. Voynich purchased the manuscript from the Jesuit College at Frascati near Rome. From the perspective of modern scholarship, this is one of the most consequential handoffs in the manuscript’s biography.
The object itself crossed from institutional religious custody into the hands of an antiquarian bookseller whose profession was finding, evaluating, describing and circulating rare books.
But the deeper transition was informational.
Before Voynich, the manuscript existed inside a Jesuit collection. After Voynich, it became increasingly visible to the modern rare-book and research worlds and eventually acquired the name by which it is now globally known.

This did not change the script.
It changed the Host World around the script.
What Do We Know Crossed in 1912?
At minimum, the 1912 handoff transmitted the physical codex.
It also transmitted material already associated with the codex, including the Marci letter preserved with it. That matters because the book did not arrive in Voynich’s hands as an absolutely contextless object. It carried some provenance information from earlier centuries.
What we should not silently assume is that the Frascati handoff transmitted a complete operational explanation.
We do not have evidence that a Jesuit custodian in 1912 supplied Voynich with a still-living protocol that made the script readable or the diagrams operationally intelligible.
Indeed, the modern history of attempted decipherment is powerful evidence that whatever explanatory state reached Voynich was not sufficient to make the manuscript ordinary again.
So the handoff is strong in material continuity and partial documentary context, but not demonstrated in operational continuity.
The 1912 Handoff on the H0–H6 Ladder
The custody pillar introduced a provisional H0–H6 evidence ladder:

The 1912 transfer comfortably reaches the material and identified-party levels. A limited H3-type state is also defensible because documentary material and provenance tradition travelled with the book.
It should not be promoted to H6.
Voynich’s possession of the book is known.
Continuity of the original reader’s operational competence is not.
Wilfrid Voynich Changed the Interpretation River
A custodian can affect an object’s history without physically altering the manuscript.
Wilfrid Voynich changed the manuscript’s informational future by making it a modern research problem.
He circulated photographs and sought scholarly attention. He pursued a Roger Bacon attribution that later scholarship has not accepted as established. The important point for the custody programme is not to relitigate every early twentieth-century interpretation here. It is to notice that a new custodian also became a powerful interpreter.
CUSTODIAN → DESCRIPTION → SCHOLARLY ATTENTION → RESEARCH QUESTIONS → PUBLIC IDENTITY
The physical object entered one person’s possession.
The interpreted object entered a much larger social system.
This is why the manuscript bears Voynich’s name today. The name itself is evidence of custodial impact.
1930: Wilfrid to Ethel
After Wilfrid Voynich’s death, Yale records that the manuscript passed to his wife, Ethel Lilian Voynich.
This is a different kind of handoff from a rare-book purchase.
It is an inheritance within a close personal relationship.
That makes a particular temptation dangerous: because Ethel was Wilfrid’s wife, it is easy to imagine that his entire knowledge state crossed automatically.
Relationships do not guarantee complete protocol transfer.
Some knowledge may have been shared in conversation and never documented. Some research notes may have survived. Some assumptions may have been familiar to both. Other details may have belonged only to Wilfrid’s memory or correspondence.
Unless the surviving documentary record establishes a specific component, the correct research state remains:

Closeness between custodians is not a substitute for evidence about what they told one another.
Ethel to Anne Nill: A Friend, Assistant and Another In-Between
Yale records that Ethel willed the manuscript to Anne Nill, described as their friend and assistant.
This is perhaps the most interesting private handoff in the modern chain from the perspective of receiver theory.
Nill was not an anonymous buyer encountering the manuscript for the first time. Her relationship to the Voynich household means she belonged to the social environment around the object.
But once again, membership in the Host World does not tell us the resolution of the transmitted knowledge.
What did Nill know that had never been formally published?
Which of Wilfrid’s hypotheses did she regard as credible?
Which acquisition details had become family memory?
Which papers remained associated with the manuscript?
Which stories had already become simplified?
Those are handoff questions.
They should not be answered from plausibility alone.
1961: Anne Nill to H. P. Kraus
In 1961 Anne Nill sold the manuscript to H. P. Kraus, the New York rare-book dealer.
This is another state transition.
PERSONAL / INHERITED CUSTODY → PROFESSIONAL ANTIQUARIAN CUSTODY
For a rare-book dealer, the object acquires another representational layer: catalogue identity.
A dealer must describe an item sufficiently for potential buyers to recognise its significance. That description cannot contain everything known about the object. It compresses.
That means the antiquarian market is also a handoff machine.
OBJECT → PROFESSIONAL DESCRIPTION → CATALOGUE → POTENTIAL RECEIVER
What is highlighted affects what the next receiver expects to see.
What is omitted may disappear from the active interpretation river even while remaining somewhere in archival papers.
The Kraus Period Shows Why Value and Meaning Are Different
The manuscript could be recognised as a rare and important object without being deciphered.
This distinction is central to custody-through-time.
UNDERSTOOD FUNCTION ≠ RECOGNISED VALUE
Human civilisation frequently preserves objects whose original function is only partly understood because rarity, historical association, beauty, strangeness, scholarly potential or cultural importance creates sufficient reason to keep them.
This may be one of the reasons the Voynich Manuscript survived long enough to enter a research institution.
It did not need to remain immediately useful at every handoff.
It only needed successive custodians to decide that discarding it would be a worse choice than preserving it.
1969: Kraus to Beinecke
Eight years after acquiring the manuscript, H. P. Kraus gave it to the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale.
This handoff changes almost every custody variable except the meaning of the script.
INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONAL CUSTODIAN → LONG-HORIZON INSTITUTIONAL CUSTODIAN
The new receiver has:
- stable shelfmark identity;
- professional conservation infrastructure;
- controlled handling;
- cataloguing systems;
- institutional continuity beyond one person’s lifespan;
- research access policies;
- reproduction and imaging capacity;
- a duty to preserve the material object for future generations.
Yale explicitly states that preserving the original intact for future generations is one reason direct access is restricted.
That single sentence makes the temporal dimension visible.
The present custodian is managing the object on behalf of receivers who do not exist yet.
1969 Is a Custody Regime Change
The transfer to Beinecke should therefore be modelled as more than another node.
Before 1969, the modern manuscript passed through a chain of identifiable people and commercial custody.
After 1969, responsibility becomes institutional.
The identity of the individual curator can change without changing the manuscript’s institutional owner.
The object can therefore outlive its human custodians while remaining inside the same custodial system.
PERSON-LIFETIME CUSTODY → INSTITUTION-LIFETIME CUSTODY
This greatly reduces one class of handoff risk: repeated transfer of the physical object between private owners.
It does not eliminate epistemic risk.
The interpreted Voynich continues to move through changing scholarly worlds even while the material Voynich remains physically stable.
The Manuscript Almost Stops Moving
Yale says the manuscript has left the Beinecke building only once since arriving there: for the Folger Shakespeare Library exhibition Decoding the Renaissance: 500 Years of Codes and Ciphers in 2014–15.
That produces one of the great inversions in the Voynich story.
PHYSICAL MOBILITY ↓↓↓ INFORMATIONAL MOBILITY ↑↑↑
The codex becomes almost stationary.
Its images, transcriptions, theories and statistical measurements travel everywhere.
This is why modern custody cannot be understood through the object alone.
The Object Stays; the Representation Travels
Beinecke’s high-resolution digital images allow researchers to inspect the complete manuscript without requiring the physical object to travel.
The modern handoff therefore changes form.
OLD MODEL: OBJECT MOVES TO RECEIVER DIGITAL MODEL: REPRESENTATION MOVES TO RECEIVER
That is safer for conservation.
It also creates a new epistemic responsibility.
The receiver must know which conclusions are justified from the representation and which questions remain dependent on object-derived evidence.
This is why the custody pillar formalises:
TESTABILITY = {SCAN, OBJECT, BOTH}
Digital availability does not turn every material question into a digital question.
What the Modern Chain Does Not Tell Us
The clarity of the 1912–1969 ownership chain can create a false feeling that the deep historical problem has also become clear.
It has not.
The modern chain tells us:
- who possessed the manuscript at several modern points;
- that the material object successfully crossed those transfers;
- that the object eventually entered stable institutional custody.
It does not tell us:
- who the original intended receiver was;
- what the original title was;
- what the marks were called by their users;
- what operational knowledge once surrounded the codex;
- when that knowledge became incomplete;
- whether loss occurred suddenly or gradually;
- which historical handoff was the last one with operational continuity.
A known modern route does not repair an unknown medieval runtime.
The Last Known Owner Is Not the Last Knowing Owner
This distinction should become permanent.
LAST KNOWN OWNER ≠ LAST RECEIVER WITH OPERATIONAL KNOWLEDGE
We can often reconstruct possession more easily than competence.
An inventory can tell us that a book sat in a library.
It may not tell us whether anyone there could still read it.
A sales record can establish that one person acquired it from another.
It may not record the conversation that accompanied the sale.
A gift can establish a new owner.
It may not transmit the old Host World.
Therefore the new historical target is not simply to extend the provenance chain backward.
It is to reconstruct the fidelity of the edges wherever evidence permits.
A Modern Handoff Matrix
The following matrix is deliberately conservative. It distinguishes what the public provenance record clearly establishes from what remains uncertain.

The matrix shows why one global “provenance confidence” score is inadequate.
Different components of the handoff have different evidence strengths.
Handoff Fidelity Is Multidimensional
Represent each transfer as:
H = (H_M, H_R, H_K, H_P, H_C, H_U)
- H_M — material fidelity;
- H_R — representation/document fidelity;
- H_K — knowledge fidelity;
- H_P — protocol fidelity;
- H_C — context/Host World fidelity;
- H_U — uncertainty fidelity.
A manuscript can travel with:
H_M = HIGH H_R = MEDIUM H_K = LOW H_P = UNKNOWN H_C = LOW H_U = UNKNOWN
That is not a failed material handoff.
It is a partially preserved knowledge handoff.
Why This Matters for the Padua Hypothesis
The Padua programme has increasingly separated production place, text ancestry, scribal training, assembly, binding and later ownership. The modern custody chain adds another warning.
Even if a future discovery places an early owner in Padua, that node alone would not tell us:
- whether the manuscript was produced there;
- whether its source material came from there;
- whether the owner could read it;
- whether the book arrived with an explanatory protocol;
- whether a later handoff broke the knowledge chain.
Padua therefore needs edge evidence as well as node evidence.
A documented transfer describing what the book was, how it was used, who taught the receiver, or which companion material accompanied it could be far more informative than another owner name by itself.
Why This Matters for Decipherment
A decipherment programme often assumes that the missing information should be recoverable from the visible script.
The custody chain warns us that information may once have lived outside the codex.
If an early handoff transmitted:
- a spoken key;
- a table;
- a professional convention;
- a memorised reading rule;
- a companion manuscript;
- a sequence of demonstrations;
- knowledge of which units were meaningful;
and a later handoff failed to transmit it, then modern researchers may be attempting to recover from the parchment alone an interface that was never designed to be self-contained.
This possibility does not excuse unfalsifiable stories.
It creates testable receiver hypotheses.
The Modern Chain Is Also a Calibration Set
The 1912–1969 chain is valuable because it lets us test our handoff method on a period where several nodes are known.
Can the method avoid inventing knowledge transfer merely because ownership transfer is secure?
Can it distinguish relationship evidence from protocol evidence?
Can it preserve an unknown context state even when the people involved are familiar?
If we cannot remain disciplined in 1912–1969, we should not trust ourselves when working on the much darker fifteenth- and sixteenth-century edges.
Known modern ownership is the control experiment for unknown historical handoff.
The River Changes at Every Custodian
Frascati preserved the codex within a Jesuit collection.
Wilfrid Voynich moved it into the modern research imagination.
Ethel preserved it through inheritance.
Anne Nill carried it through another personal handoff and into the rare-book market.
Kraus held it as a professional antiquarian object.
Beinecke transformed it into a long-horizon institutional research object.
Digitisation then allowed the representation to leave the object behind geographically.
Each stage altered the Host World.
The parchment did not have to change for the Voynich system to change.
The Chain Continues Past Yale
Yale is the current institutional custodian of the physical manuscript.
But the informational chain already extends much further.
BEINECKE OBJECT → YALE IMAGES → FACSIMILES → TRANSCRIPTIONS → DATASETS → PAPERS → WEBSITES → AI SYSTEMS → FUTURE RECEIVERS
The next in-between may never touch the parchment.
They may receive only a derived dataset.
Or a cropped image.
Or an AI summary.
That makes the modern custody chain the beginning of a new problem rather than the end of the old one.
The Future Receiver Test for Provenance
Imagine that a researcher in 2300 has only our condensed provenance statement:
The Voynich Manuscript passed from the Jesuits to Voynich, then to Ethel, Nill, Kraus and Yale.
The sentence is broadly useful.
But it hides several distinctions:
- purchase versus inheritance versus sale versus gift;
- individual versus institutional custody;
- physical object versus documentary context;
- ownership continuity versus knowledge continuity;
- what is documented versus what is inferred.
A high-fidelity handoff to the future should preserve those distinctions.
What We Can Say, and What We Cannot
We can say
- Wilfrid Voynich purchased the manuscript from the Jesuit College at Frascati in 1912.
- After his death it passed to Ethel Voynich.
- Ethel willed it to Anne Nill.
- Nill sold it to H. P. Kraus in 1961.
- Kraus gave it to Beinecke in 1969.
- Beinecke is its present institutional home.
- The physical object has been highly stable there, leaving the building only once according to Yale.
We cannot infer from those facts alone
- that any one of these custodians possessed the manuscript’s original operating knowledge;
- that a private conversation transmitted a lost reading protocol;
- that a known owner was a knowledgeable user;
- that knowledge loss happened at any particular modern transfer;
- that modern provenance identifies medieval production geography.
This distinction is the purpose of the article.
World Return
The route from Frascati to New Haven looks simple when written as six names.
It becomes much more interesting when we look at the crossings.
A purchase.
An inheritance.
A bequest.
A sale.
A gift.
An institutional preservation regime.
At every edge the material object survives.
At every edge the information packet is different.
And nowhere in the modern chain do we recover a demonstrated continuous protocol reaching back to the manuscript’s original user.
The modern custody chain tells us how the Voynich Manuscript reached us. The handoff problem asks whether the thing that once made it intelligible reached us too.
That remains unknown.
And until it is known, the edge stays open.
