How Assessment Works | Score Aggregation Loss — What Does a Total Score Hide?

Two students both score 70%.

One is consistently solid. The other is excellent in half the paper and very weak in the other half.

Score aggregation loss is the detail lost when several dimensions of performance are compressed into one total, percentage, grade or band.

This is the second pillar in the second Assessment quartet beneath How Assessment Works. It owns one question: what important structure disappears when a profile becomes a single number?

Total scores are powerful because they simplify. They also conceal. Two learners can reach the same percentage through very different combinations of knowledge, reasoning, speed, language, accuracy and transfer. One strong component can compensate numerically for a serious weakness in another. Aggregation is appropriate when the decision genuinely concerns the overall construct. It becomes misleading when the next action depends on the hidden profile. Strong assessment therefore preserves access to enough item-, strand- or process-level evidence to reopen the total when diagnosis matters.

The Total Is a Summary, Not the Learner

A percentage tells us how much credit was earned under the scoring system.

It does not automatically tell us which capability is strong, which is fragile, or why marks were lost.

Compensation Can Hide a Bottleneck

Strong factual recall can compensate for weak transfer. Strong language can compensate for shallow content in some tasks. Fast execution can offset errors elsewhere.

The total can look healthy while one critical dependency remains weak.

Subscores Are Useful Only When They Are Stable Enough

Breaking a paper into tiny categories can create the opposite error: apparent precision based on too few items.

A diagnostic profile needs enough evidence to justify the distinction.

Open the Total Only When the Decision Needs It

For certification, an overall score may be the right object.

For teaching, revision or intervention, the next decision often needs finer structure.

TOTAL SCORE: 70%
ALGEBRA: 90%
GEOMETRY: 88%
STATISTICS: 42%
TIME LOSS: concentrated in final section

DECISION:
do not revise “Math” generally;
inspect Statistics and timed end-of-paper execution.

Final Thought: Compression Should Remain Reversible

A total score is useful when it makes a decision easier. It becomes dangerous when the compression hides the very weakness the next decision needs to see.
