How Dancing Works | Touch, Contact and Partnering — How Two Bodies Share Information

Partnering works because two dancers can exchange information through touch before either of them says a word. A handhold can reveal direction. A frame can transmit timing. A change in pressure can signal readiness, hesitation or redirection. Weight can be offered, received, redirected or refused. When the communication is skilled, both dancers remain active participants in one coupled movement system.

This is why good partnering does not feel like one dancer operating another.

It feels like information moving in both directions.

Touch becomes dance communication when contact tells the other body something useful without taking away its ability to respond.

When they touch, another channel opens.

Studies of partnered stepping have shown that dancers can use haptic information to infer speed and direction, even under conditions where visual information is reduced.

Touch is therefore not merely decoration around the movement.

In many partner dances, hands and arms form a frame.

The purpose is not to become rigid.
