This authority article belongs to the canonical How English Works V1.1. The EnglishOS master already recognises compression and route length as system properties. This page owns the writer-side decision: information density control—how much meaning a sentence or paragraph should ask the reader to recover at once, and when a concept should be compressed or expanded.
Concise writing is not always clear writing.
Detailed writing is not always helpful writing.
The real problem is not length.
It is density.
The shortest useful definition
Information density control is the writer’s management of how much new, inferentially dependent or conceptually compressed meaning is packed into each unit of text relative to the reader’s likely ability to recover it.

1. Compression removes words, but it can also remove bridges
“Demand fell, so prices dropped.”
For a reader who already understands the mechanism, that may be enough.
For a novice, the missing bridge—how lower demand changes competition among sellers—may need expansion.
2. Expansion should reveal structure, not merely add words
Bad expansion:
“This is very important in many different ways and has several significant effects that should be considered carefully.”
Useful expansion:
“The policy changes behaviour through two routes: it raises the cost of the unwanted action and makes the preferred alternative easier to choose.”
The second version adds structure, not padding.
3. Density depends on how much is new
A sentence containing five familiar ideas may be easy.
A sentence containing two unfamiliar abstractions and one unstated causal link may be hard.
Difficulty is therefore not reducible to word count.
4. Density depends on inferential distance
If the reader must silently supply several missing steps, a short sentence can be extremely dense.

Information density control asks how much of that integration work the writer should demand at one point.
5. Shared knowledge can be compressed
Batch 6’s Common-Ground Management explains what communicators can treat as shared.
When background is genuinely shared, repeating it creates friction.
When it is only assumed to be shared, compression creates exclusion or misunderstanding.
6. New mechanisms usually need expansion
A conclusion may be easy to state:
“The system became unstable.”
But if the reader needs to understand why, the causal path must be unpacked.
Expansion is justified when it exposes a dependency the reader cannot safely infer.
7. Important distinctions deserve space
If two terms are easy to confuse but lead to different conclusions, compression is dangerous.
For example:
- correlation vs causation
- risk vs certainty
- efficiency vs resilience
- evidence vs example
- description vs evaluation
The writer should slow down where the conceptual boundary matters.
8. Evidence density must match claim strength
A large claim compressed into one sentence with one example asks the reader to make too large a jump.

9. Qualification often needs expansion
Short claims tend to sound categorical.
When reality is conditional, the writer may need space for:
- scope
- conditions
- exceptions
- degree of confidence
- limits of evidence
Compression should not create false certainty.
10. Repetition can often be compressed
If three sentences perform the same rhetorical job, one stronger sentence may be better.

11. Definitions can compress an entire explanation
Once a term has been carefully defined, later text can use it as a compression token.
This is one reason precise terminology is powerful: a good term can carry a whole previously established distinction.
12. Jargon can create false compression
A technical label saves space only for readers who possess the underlying model.
Otherwise the label hides complexity rather than compressing it usefully.
13. Sentence architecture also affects perceived density

Dense content placed inside deep embedding becomes doubly expensive: conceptually dense and structurally delayed.
14. Paragraph architecture is a density valve
A new paragraph can reduce local density by giving the reader a visible reset point.
But paragraph breaks cannot rescue ideas that were never conceptually unpacked.
15. Density should vary across a text
Strong writing does not keep every paragraph equally dense.
A useful pattern may be:
orientation → dense mechanism → concrete example → compact implication
Variation creates processing relief.
16. Audience changes the safe density threshold
An expert audience can tolerate more shared terminology and fewer explicit bridges.
A novice audience needs more expansion around assumptions and causal steps.
This does not mean simplifying the truth. It means making the route recoverable.
17. High-stakes writing should expand critical conditions
Instructions, safety conditions, deadlines, permissions and exceptions often deserve explicit space.
A writer should not compress away the very distinction on which the next action depends.
18. Revision can test density directly

- expand the strongest claim into its hidden steps
- compare what disappeared
- restore only the missing structure the reader actually needs

20. The CivDJ backward pass
- Circle the densest sentence.
- List every idea the reader must already know or infer.
- Identify which assumptions are safe.
- Expand the unsafe assumptions.
- Compress repeated explanation elsewhere.
- Retest the passage as a whole for balance.
21. Rotate one idea
Over-compressed:
“The policy failed because incentives were misaligned.”
Useful expansion:
“The policy rewarded the visible target rather than the intended outcome. Organisations could therefore improve the measured number without improving the underlying service, so rational compliance produced the wrong behaviour.”
Once that mechanism is established, later sections can compress it back to misaligned incentives.
22. Common failure modes
- Compression worship: shorter is assumed to be clearer.
- Explanation inflation: more words appear without more structure.
- Jargon masking: technical labels hide rather than carry shared models.
- Assumption overload: too many missing bridges are left to the reader.
- Uniform density: every paragraph demands the same processing load.
- False simplicity: conditions and exceptions disappear to make prose look clean.
23. Repair route
- Identify what is genuinely new.
- Identify what is safely shared.
- Expand mechanisms before conclusions.
- Expand distinctions that alter interpretation or action.
- Compress repetition and already-established background.
- Separate dense conceptual work from dense syntax.
- Vary density across the passage.
24. Why this matters for students
Students are often told either to “be concise” or to “add more detail.” Both instructions are incomplete.
The durable question is:
Which part of this idea can the reader safely recover in compressed form, and which part must I unpack because the hidden steps matter?

Writing is bandwidth management.
Good writers do not simply minimise or maximise words; they regulate how much unresolved meaning enters the reader’s processing corridor at one time.
