The printed form is identical. The meaning is not.
Yet fluent readers do not normally stop, list every dictionary entry and calculate probabilities by hand. Context rapidly narrows the field until one interpretation becomes dominant enough to continue.
This is one of English’s quietest and most important mechanisms. A language with a finite vocabulary can remain extraordinarily expressive because words are not locked to one use. The receiver reconstructs the intended sense from a network of clues.
The shortest useful definition
Word-sense resolution is the process by which a reader or listener selects the contextually appropriate meaning of a word from the meanings or interpretations that the lexical form could support.
The mechanism combines lexical knowledge with syntax, nearby vocabulary, topic, discourse history, pragmatic purpose and world knowledge.

1. A word form is not the same thing as one meaning
