Quick Read: A sketch can suggest a garment. A factory needs instructions. The tech pack is the translation layer between those two worlds. It specifies what the garment is, how it is measured, what it is made from, which construction details matter, what tolerances are acceptable and which revision is current.
A beautiful sketch cannot run a production line
Fashion drawings are excellent at intention. They are poor at operational precision.
A factory needs to know whether the sleeve opening is 24 or 26 centimetres, which zipper is required, what seam finish is expected, which fabric colour is approved and how much variation is acceptable.
The tech pack is where creative language becomes production language.

Measurements create a reproducible body model
Points of measure define where and how dimensions are taken. Without consistent measurement methods, two factories can interpret the same number differently.
Specification therefore includes both value and method.
Tolerances acknowledge reality
Production cannot deliver mathematically identical garments. Fabric stretches, operators vary and processes introduce small deviations.
Tolerances define how much variation is acceptable before a garment becomes a defect.
The bill of materials turns style into inventory
Fabric, lining, thread, buttons, labels, zippers, elastic, packaging and other components must be listed clearly.
The bill of materials connects design to sourcing and cost.
Colourways need controlled references
“Blue” is not precise enough for manufacturing. Colours need approved references and sometimes physical standards.
Colour control is therefore part of information quality.
Construction notes capture hidden details
Stitch type, seam allowance, reinforcement, edge finish and placement may be invisible in a sketch but critical in production.
These notes convert tacit design expectation into explicit instruction.
Revision control prevents expensive confusion
A factory using an old file can produce hundreds of units incorrectly.
Every change therefore needs a clear version, date and approval status.

The sample tests the document
If the first sample does not match intent, the problem may lie in pattern, material, construction—or in the tech pack itself.
Sampling is therefore a test of both garment and information.
Comments close the loop
Fit notes, photos, measurement corrections and construction feedback are returned to the supplier. The updated tech pack becomes the new source of truth.
Tech packs also control quality
Inspectors need something to compare the finished garment against. The approved specification provides that reference.
Without a stable spec, “good enough” becomes subjective.
Global production makes clarity more important
Teams may work across languages, time zones and organisational cultures. Ambiguous shorthand becomes dangerous.
Good technical communication reduces reliance on assumptions.

3D garment systems, PLM platforms and shared cloud workflows increasingly link specification, pattern, material and approval data.
The principle remains the same even when the interface changes: one controlled definition of what is being made.
