Bounce Flash Turns Architecture Into a Modifier
A white ceiling or wall can act as a large secondary source. The reflected light becomes softer and often more natural than direct flash. But surface colour matters: a red wall can tint the bounce, and a very high ceiling can waste too much light.
TTL and Manual Flash Solve Different Problems
Through-the-lens flash metering estimates how much flash output is needed based on a preflash or metering sequence. It is fast when distances change. Manual flash fixes power, making repeated setups more consistent. One prioritises adaptability; the other prioritises repeatability.

- Direct versus bounce. Photograph one subject with direct flash and bounced flash and compare shadow edges.
- Ambient balance. Keep flash similar while changing shutter duration and observe how the background changes.
- Motion freeze. In a safe darkened room, compare continuous light with a brief flash on a moving harmless subject.

- “Flash is only for darkness.” It is equally useful for daylight fill and contrast control.
- “Faster shutter always freezes flash-lit motion better.” Flash duration can become the dominant freezing interval.
- “TTL is always more accurate than manual.” TTL adapts; manual can be more consistent in controlled conditions.
