The Serial Shipping Container Code, or SSCC, is the GS1 identification key used to uniquely identify an individual logistics unit such as a pallet, case, roll cage or parcel that must be managed through transport or storage.
In one line: the SSCC gives one physical logistics unit one globally unique logistics identity for the life of that unit.

- Reader job: understand why logistics units need unique instance-level identity and how SSCC differs from a product code or shipment number.

Why a Product Code Is Not Enough
Suppose a warehouse receives ten identical pallets of the same product.
All ten pallets may contain cartons with the same GTIN because they contain the same trade item. The warehouse still needs to distinguish Pallet 1 from Pallet 2, Pallet 3 and so on.
That is an instance identity problem.
The SSCC solves it by giving each logistics unit its own unique number.
GTIN answers “what kind of trade item is this?” SSCC answers “which exact logistics unit is this?”
What Counts as a Logistics Unit?
GS1 defines a logistics unit as an item of any composition established for transport or storage that needs to be managed through the supply chain.
- A pallet of cartons.
- A roll cage.
- A parcel.
- A case used as a transport unit.
- A mixed pallet containing several products.
The unit can be simple or mixed. What matters is that it is being handled as one transport or storage object.
The SSCC Is an 18-Digit GS1 Key
The current GS1 General Specifications define the SSCC structure using an extension digit, GS1 Company Prefix, serial reference and check digit, producing an 18-digit identifier.
The exact allocation logic belongs to GS1 rules. Operationally, the important property is uniqueness: one valid SSCC should point to one logistics unit during its active life.
SSCC Is Usually Carried on the Logistics Label
The GS1 Logistic Label allows humans and machines to identify the unit.
The SSCC is commonly encoded in a machine-readable symbol such as a GS1-128 barcode and printed in human-readable form on the label. Where RFID is used, the same identity can also be represented through EPC/RFID standards.
This reveals the technology hierarchy:
SSCC = identity. Barcode or RFID = data carrier. Warehouse / transport system = business meaning and event history.
The Label Can Change While the SSCC Stays the Same
If a label is damaged and reprinted correctly, the same logistics unit should keep the same SSCC.
The identifier belongs to the physical unit, not to one piece of paper.
This is why reprinting needs control: the new label must represent the same unit without leaving an obsolete duplicate that can later confuse scanners.
The SSCC Links Physical Freight to Electronic Information
GS1 guidance describes SSCC as the link between a physical logistics unit and information about that unit communicated electronically between trading partners.
The label therefore does not need to print every attribute physically. The SSCC can act as the lookup key for richer data already transmitted through advance shipment information, EDI, APIs or other systems.
Advance Shipment Information Makes SSCC More Powerful
Imagine a receiver gets an electronic despatch advice before the truck arrives. That message says:
- Shipment 827 contains three logistics units.
- SSCC A contains Products X and Y.
- SSCC B contains Product Z.
- SSCC C contains a mixed promotional load.
At the dock, scanning each SSCC can match the physical arrival against the expected unit.
The receiving system can therefore verify whole logistics units before opening every carton.
SSCC Can Accelerate Receiving Without Eliminating Verification
A scanned SSCC can confirm that the expected pallet arrived and connect it to its electronic contents record.
The warehouse may still need quantity, condition, lot, temperature or exception checks depending on risk.
This keeps the distinction from Warehouse Receiving: SSCC supports identity; receiving decides whether the arrival becomes trusted usable stock.
SSCC Supports Cross-Docking
If the system already knows the destination of SSCC 123 before it reaches the building, the unit can be routed directly toward the correct outbound lane rather than stored first.
That makes unique logistics-unit identity useful for Cross-Docking, where time is too compressed for repeated manual interpretation.
SSCC Supports Automated Routing
A conveyor, sortation system or dock process can scan the SSCC and query where that unit should go next.
The physical unit becomes addressable by a stable machine-readable key instead of by appearance or handwritten destination notes.
One Logistics Unit Can Contain Many Trade Items
A mixed pallet may contain different GTINs, quantities, lots or orders while the pallet itself still has one SSCC.
This creates a parent-child relationship:
One SSCC logistics unit → contains one or many identified trade-item quantities.
The system should preserve that relationship so the unit can be handled as one object without losing knowledge of what sits inside it.
Packing Changes Can Change the Logistics Unit
If two pallets are broken apart and rebuilt into three different pallets, the original physical logistics units no longer exist in the same form.
New logistics units generally need new unique identities according to the applicable GS1 allocation rules.
The digital model must therefore follow the real aggregation and disaggregation events rather than pretending one old SSCC can describe a newly rebuilt object forever.
SSCC Is Not a Shipment Number
A shipment can contain several logistics units. Each pallet may have its own SSCC while the group of pallets shares a shipment identifier.
GS1 distinguishes these levels:
- SSCC: individual logistics unit.
- GSIN: grouping of logistics units that need to be delivered together as a shipment.
- GINC: grouping of logistics units transported together as a consignment, often used in freight-forwarding contexts.
This hierarchy prevents one number from being overloaded with several incompatible meanings.
SSCC Is Not the Same as Container Number
A maritime freight container has its own container identification system. The pallets or other logistics units inside may each carry SSCCs.
Again, the network contains several nested identities because it contains several nested physical objects.
Unique Means Unique Across Partners
The power of SSCC comes from not needing every trading partner to invent a private pallet number.
A supplier, carrier, warehouse and receiver can all refer to the same logistics unit by the same SSCC, even though their internal systems use different local record IDs.
This reduces identity translation at handoffs.
Duplicate SSCC Assignment Is a Serious Failure
If the same active SSCC is assigned to two different physical units, every downstream system can become confused.
A scan at receiving may appear valid but refer to the wrong contents record. Tracking events from two physical units can collapse into one digital history.
This is a direct identity fracture: one digital object, two physical realities.
SSCC Supports Traceability Because Events Can Reference the Same Unit
Once a unique logistics unit exists, event systems can record that the same SSCC was packed, shipped, received, stored, loaded or delivered.
That does not make SSCC itself an event standard. It creates the stable object identity that event standards can refer to.

A Singapore Lens
In a high-throughput logistics hub such as Singapore, unique logistics-unit identity reduces friction when pallets and parcels pass through warehouses, carriers, terminals and receivers in quick succession.
The mechanism is universal: fast physical flow requires stable digital reference. The more organisations touch the unit, the more valuable one shared unique identity becomes.

What does the barcode encode?
If every pallet carries the same product GTIN, they are not uniquely identified as logistics units. If one SSCC was duplicated accidentally, two physical pallets may still share one digital identity.
Unique logistics identity depends on the identifier, not merely the existence of a machine-readable symbol.

- What physical object is the logistics unit?
- Does it have one unique SSCC?
- Is the SSCC encoded and printed correctly?
- Can the receiver match it to advance shipment information?
- Are contained trade items associated correctly?
- Has the unit been rebuilt or split since allocation?
- Are obsolete labels removed?
- Are duplicate SSCC assignments prevented?
- Is the SSCC confused with GTIN, GSIN, GINC or container number?
- Can all partners reference the same unit identity?
- Do event records continue to reference the correct physical unit?
