How Photography Works | Bokeh Is What the Lens Does With the Parts You Did Not Focus On

Quick Read. Blur is a quantity; bokeh is a rendering. Two photographs can have similarly shallow depth of field and still produce very different out-of-focus backgrounds because lenses distribute light differently when a point is not focused on the sensor. Aperture shape, spherical aberration, optical vignetting, aspherical elements and scene structure all influence the result.

One-sentence answer: Bokeh works by revealing the optical shape of defocus—how a lens turns out-of-focus scene points into blur discs and how those discs overlap into a background.

Out-of-Focus Points Become Shapes

A point light that is not focused onto the sensor does not remain a point. It spreads into a blur disc. The appearance of that disc contains information about the aperture and lens. Rounded apertures tend to produce rounder highlights; polygonal apertures can reveal blade shape. Near frame edges, optical vignetting can clip discs into cat-eye forms.

Smooth Does Not Mean More Blur

A background can be strongly blurred yet visually nervous if blur discs have bright edges or repeating texture. Another lens may produce less blur but smoother transitions. This is why photographers distinguish the amount of blur from the character of blur.

Spherical Aberration Leaves a Signature

Residual spherical aberration can make blur discs brighter toward the centre or edge depending on whether the background lies in front of or behind the focus plane. Optical designers can balance this behaviour differently, and photographers sometimes prefer a lens whose imperfection produces gentler backgrounds.

Aspherical Elements Can Leave Onion Rings

Some molded aspherical elements can create fine concentric texture inside bright out-of-focus highlights. These so-called onion rings may be invisible in ordinary scenes and obvious in photographs containing small bright lights against dark backgrounds.

Background Distance Still Matters More Than Romance

Even a lens famous for beautiful bokeh cannot blur a background strongly if the background sits almost on the subject plane. Subject-to-background distance remains one of the strongest practical controls. Move the subject away from the background and the optical differences become easier to see.

Three Experiments

  1. Point-light test. Photograph small distant lights wide open and stopped down; inspect highlight shape.
  2. Distance test. Keep the subject fixed and move the background progressively farther away.
  3. Lens comparison. Match framing and aperture as closely as practical with two lenses and compare background texture rather than merely blur amount.

Common Misconceptions

  • “Bokeh means blurry background.” It describes the rendering quality of out-of-focus regions, not merely how blurred they are.
  • “More aperture blades guarantee better bokeh.” Blade shape matters, but optical design and aberrations matter too.
  • “Expensive lenses always have beautiful bokeh.” Rendering preference is partly subjective and scene-dependent.

The Final Idea

Focus tells us where the lens was asked to be precise. Bokeh tells us what the lens did everywhere else. It is the optical personality of the photograph’s discarded precision.
