Important Word Distinctions
Historic vs Historical
Historic usually means important in history: “a historic decision.” Historical means connected with history: “historical records.” A building may be historical because it relates to the past; it is historic when it has particular importance.
Crowded vs Bustling vs Hectic
Crowded describes how full a place is. Bustling adds lively activity. Hectic suggests intense busyness and possible disorder. Do not use them as automatic synonyms.
Notice vs Observe vs Examine
You may notice something quickly, observe it carefully and examine it in detail. These verbs can create a useful progression in both comprehension and composition.
Practice Set A: Choose the Better Word
- The station was so crowded / tranquil that we had to slow down.
- The museum guide asked us to examine / rush the small inscription carefully.
- The restored gate is a prominent landmark / receipt in the area.
- A light breeze / downpour moved the leaves.
- The shop had a wide selection / vicinity of postcards.
- The polished surface reflected / bordered the lights.
- We followed the signs to navigate / preserve the station.
- The quiet garden created a serene / hectic atmosphere.
- The two buildings look similar, but their entrances differ / resemble.
- The pattern was so intricate / stale that I stopped to study it.
Answers
1 crowded; 2 examine; 3 landmark; 4 breeze; 5 selection; 6 reflected; 7 navigate; 8 serene; 9 differ; 10 intricate. In each case, check that the meaning matches the noun or action around it.
Practice Set B: Upgrade the Sentence
Do not make sentences longer just to sound impressive. Improve precision.
- “The place was nice.” Replace nice with a word that describes the atmosphere.
- “There were many people.” Decide whether crowded, bustling or hectic fits and explain why.
- “I looked at the object.” Replace looked at with a verb that shows the level of attention.
- “The building was old.” Decide whether historic, historical, traditional or restored communicates the intended meaning.
- “The road went beside the river.” Rewrite using riverside or bordered.
From Word to Paragraph
Weak description often becomes a catalogue: “There were shops. There were signs. There were many people.” Stronger description organises details around a viewpoint:
From the station entrance, a steady stream of pedestrians moved towards the shopping street. Bright signs lined the buildings while small stalls displayed neatly packaged snacks and souvenirs. The district was crowded, but the movement felt orderly rather than chaotic.
The paragraph uses precise vocabulary, but it also makes a judgement carefully. “Orderly” is supported by the description of a steady stream and organised movement. Good vocabulary works with evidence.
Composition Challenge
Choose ten words from this list and write a 120–150 word setting paragraph. Use no more than one word from the same meaning family in a sentence. Then revise: remove any word that does not add useful information.
